To be perfectly honest, I don't think that someone should retain their seat if they are not mentally able to handle it. Gabby Gifford was a great congresswoman. She got shot in the head. Her recovery is remarkable. But can she cut the mustard today? Is her speech slurred? Thoughts clear? A whole lot of questons need to be asked and perhaps she should step aside if she's disabled.
Congresswoman Gifford has not participated in many votes, or said her part, since her injury, and while tragic that means her constituents are not being represented. The missed votes and the indecent which lead to it are both factors which come into play when reelection comes about. I think the responsible thing for her to do at this point is to step back and let another democrat run in her place. When she's recovered to fulfill her obligations she can win again...easily.

This is uncomfortable to talk about but it needs to be addressed -- if Giffords had half her brain blown out, as tragic as that is for her and her family, she may not be mentally capable of holding her office. She isn't some class president voting on what kind of theme to have at a school dance; this is our country we're talking about. We need to have more respect for the office of representative.

Jimmy is dead on. Having Giffords vote on the debt ceiling deal was just a facade to distract everyone from how truly ugly that deal was for 90% of Americans. It was an attempt to put a little positive spin on an indisputably negative piece of legislation. Jimmy's skepticism is absolutely warranted.

Congresswoman Gifford has not participated in many votes, or said her part, since her injury, and while tragic that means her constituents are not being represented. The missed votes and the indecent which lead to it are both factors which come into play when reelection comes about. I think the responsible thing for her to do at this point is to step back and let another democrat run in her place. When she's recovered to fulfill her obligations she can win again...easily.

They're all right to a degree. The problem is actually with the US system of representation.
If she (or any member of the House) is physically impaired and cannot attend House sessions where votes are required to be cast, then the people that elected her are not being represented. That's not the way democracy is supposed to be.
There should be a system whereby (in genuine cases) nominees can vote on behalf of the incapacitated Senatorial / Congressional representatives.

@navyboydjray It isn't necessarily "free" healthcare in Germany. About 45% of the average German's wage goes to tax. In the U.S., It's about 27%. A better comparison would be to Canada. There, everyone gets healthcare and the percentage of tax they pay is only a little higher than the U.S. at 31%. Those who have in the U.S. seem to have trouble with the idea of maybe paying a little more to help those who don't. That would make you a "Socialist" or a "Communist" :-)

Disabled people have to live up to real world expectations. That's reality. Whether she is impaired or not, she must run a solid campaign. If you expect competitors to pull punches, or not to compete, because of the circumstances, then it's a loss for the American people, as we are not getting the choices we should be getting.

I agree with Jim that she shouldn't be exempt from having to answer questions about the bill, especially the one he wanted to ask. But Cenk & Michael are right that she wouldn't be asked those questions during interviews..

@ReasonedScience This country doesn't care about people who can't work themselves to the bone day in and out. if you're sick or injured, who cares if you can't pay extreme amounts to keep yourself alive and properly medicated or cared for? You aren't adding to the social machine that is America, and if you can't work yourself into your 70's so you can then barely afford a tiny apartments rent to live in near squallor the rest of your short lifespan, then you aren't a person at all.

if she DIDN'T sign off on laws that could affect millions of people's lives, her mental state SHOULD allow her a free pass on some things. But saying 'oh, we're going to let her do whatever she wants because she was wounded' is kind of extreme, especially in political circumstances.
