Finished last may went to a private uni in london so paid wayyyy more than you did. Had a lot of fun and got a marketing degree in my spare time lol. 2:1 as well but guess what, yet to get a real job almost a year later. Was dragged kicking and screaming to graduation coz i wanted to avoid the real world. I get no comfort in knowing it's exactly as shit as I thought it would be. Sure I got an education but it's just not competitive. Uni was a fun couple of years, not much more.
Uni was pretty useless...i'm technically done but i'm trying to stall graduation...because there's nothing out in the real world for me :/ WHAT AM I SUPPOSED TO DO WITH MY LIFE?! heeeeeeeelp
This video went up on my biiirthday :D ! Aaand it's talking about university, something I'm very interested in at the moment! :D Relevance to any of this? None x)
I hated the first university I went to. I'm at another right now and it's ok... Taking the semester off b/c of a series of panic attacks last semester. I too was majoring in theatre... Might be switching to digital arts though. I just think the whole college/ uni thing isn't for me but society says otherwise. And by society I mean my mom.
this is old yes and i believe we're the same age about...but yeah i dont feel that college/uni did anything for me either but waste time and money 99% of what is learned isnt used and jobs will teach you the ways THEY want anyway. I finished and thought wow ok well im the same as i was 3-4 years ago and still no relevant jobs...great
I'm going to be a doctor X2. I want both an allopathic degree and a naturopathic degree because I'm mental. Oh and a BS in Nutrition. I could do Nutrition in my sleep. It's a waste of time. Why do we need a BS/BA to get into med school anyway? Ah yes, they (the universities) want us in more debt, which makes everyone, except the student, more money over time. Enterprising little fuckers, don't you think?
@DrMachiavelli haha, you do medicine at uni if you want to become a doctor :P. i'm doing a biology degree ( i'll probably end up make the drugs the doctors use) and its pretty interesting!
I did Japanese, lost interest, carried on with East Asian Studies. WHY?
What the fuck am I going to do with very specialised knowledge about Japan and Korea? I didn't do anything on China because I'm an idiot. Looking forward to a lovely life of debt, unemployment, and living with my parents because that's all I'll be able to afford. YAAAAAAY
If local college counts I would have to say the fallowing: 1. Local colleges suck cause they can't narrow down to what you really want to learn and get a degree in. 2. The apts you stay at on campus are full of stupid immature idoitic just graduated from high school jerks that make constant noise, drink, break rules, and start false fires that every has to leave at 1am due to they can't cook mac and cheese. 3. Its just like high school but without having to do a PE class. UGH!!
Was just randomly going through your videos, came across this and realised i'm currently doing the same course at the same uni as you did. Screwed with my mind a bit, not gonna lie.
sound like a nice middle class lad mum and dad will alwys bail you out mate, simple you want to act then act on the street a one man show + hat or go around the world video what happens make it interesting a theme or something food or a mission to croos three continants in 30 days or climb the six highest mountains in your pants, boots and a ruch sack then edit into a small film with extras playing parts etc ali g style maybe and then you will be the next big thing bad da bing
Yes, I went to university and it was the worst place of my life ever. I could not believe that I called it "eternal bliss" before I planned to go because I thought that it would be the best out of my life but it was not, it brought out the most ignorant bigoted students, stupid lecturers and a useless degree which have left me in loneliness and unemployment. I never even had the chance to have a girlfriend there.
I totally agree. It's so much money and I'm doing a degree I HATE! 6 months and it'll all be over!! The worst thing is I probably won't even be able to get a 'proper job' when I finish!! How depressing!! Ah well.. I'll just watch more crabstickz to cheer me up :D
@missvolzig where are you from? In my country (Brazil) There is Payed and free universities. The free ones are the most known better and hard to get into. :)
@brendielahooha It used to be free in England. My parents were paid to go to uni and they could get unemployment benifits in the summer holidays. But it wasn't stable ecconimicly, so now we have to pay for it. There are means tested student loans. The prices can be up to 9000 pound a year in the best universities! I personally think they should have brought in a graduate tax to subsidise the universities. They thought about it, I think Lib dems wanted it, didn't happen though.
University has changed me a lot. I've lived and am still living with an extremely abusive housemate, so it's been a lot of dealing with people and standing your ground. Also I'm a fashion student, so its very likely that I'll be unemployed! It is different from everyone, I found it tough BUT I'd recommend it to anyone, its a life experience like no other!
Chris, you have a brilliant mind. Start as Tarantino did. You need to be developing a script for a feature-length film. Then film it cheaply in England using your friends and yourself and whatnot and if the story's quality/humorous enough, you'll have a chance. Enter it in festivals and things. You'll probably be respected for your formal schooling accolades.
Anyway, God I can imagine how a theatre course in Leeds can be dreadful, I'm from York so I know that crappy city pretty well by now. Looks like the spat-out remains of the industrial revolution.
Anyway, it must be frustrating to have to pay £18000 for a bloody piece of paper. I know how that feels, I paid the same thing for my exams. Anyway, as you finish your degree now, you're a step ahead of me so there isn't much to say about uni that you don't already know.
Well, the main thing I can say about university is that, I France where I am currently, it's entirely free (more than what I can say about high school) so filled with people who neither care nor want to continue their studies. I've been waiting nearly all my life to go back home to England to study in University but I'm constantly held back by student loans policies. Law is great although we're what? 1800 in my class alone so imagine the atmosphere of that.
I think most creative university courss need to be more focussed on teaching you skills that are of use in the real wold of work. And I think courses should have much better links with the industry they're meant to be training you up to enter. Degrees should I think generaly be more like apprenticeships.
I'm a freshman at my university.. I study movies, "movie science". It sounds awesome, right? At first, it was.. I was in heaven, since I'm a movie freak and watching/making videos is probably my life, sad enough... but I don't feel like studying this - I'm automatically will get job on a movie set... and wasting my time studying doesn't feel right...
I'm at Huddersfield Uni too, but doing an Illustration course, and yeah it's pretty pants. In my 2nd though, 1st year was a waste of time, it's just an extra year of funding for the Uni tbh
when you say you took a college course years ago I always wonder how old you are. You really barely look 22 . TELL US HOW OLD YOU ARE!! I want to know lol
I'm at Huddersfield now, my second year starts officially on Monday! I know just what you mean! I'm studying English Language with Creative Writing and can't help but think if I just got a full-time job and wrote in my spare time I'd be further on than I am now.
Finished 4th year Chemical Engineering. My biggest problem is over complicating a problem. Because the teachers make the topics seem arcane but when youve finished the course and failed it you realize it wasn't very hard. I have another year of courses to go but I hate university and would have been better off starting work out of high school and maybe going to school after a few years of work.
I can't believe I didn't know you went to Derby before now. I live in Derby. Everything you said about it is true. That's why i'm fleeing in September!
omfuuu crabzzzzzzz; youzz a babe! and? i hate uni too. well not uni, i mean unicorns are cool, so is uni.... but... my fam was always like "you'll meet great people...."
xP didn't happen. costs too much, awful hahahahaha
i haven't started lactating yet bahahaha
yeh mang, friggin frig with the student loans... lucky i don't have any!
I've applied to study Archaeology & Anthropology at Cambridge soon after two years of Maths, Further Maths and Physics A-Levels - that nearly bloody killed me I can tell you. I've wanted to be an archaeologist since I was really (REALLY) young but I'm rather good at Maths and it's a good back-up. My dream job is to be the curator of the Natural History Museum (London) but LOL that's unlikely.
I'm skipping uni for a while. Too scared, still feel too little and I don't wanna be stuck doing graphics. Back packing round Aus and NewZealand for a year and it costs a hell of alot less.
I'm in my last year of Creative Writing at Derby University...yeah...I'm about ready to leave now...draaaaaaaaaggg. I used to be in the St Christophers accomodation and I hated it. I didn't meet one friendly person in the first year.
3rd uni student in toronto, canada, so much stress and no life= sucks bullocks :( and one more year and I get a paper that says thanks and recongizes I spent 4 years at this instituion and spend around $23,000 plus some extra anxicillarys, but for me it is only the first step until I get into law school and another 3 years! awesome!!! woohoo (sacrastic) lol
Going to university makes more sense if a person has a job in mind that does definitely require that further education. If a person doesn't know what they want to do (like me) or can find a different route to where they want to go that is less expensive, then there's no point in going to university. Yeah! that's my take on it. :D
I've spent three years in college doing AS/A levels. I have enjoyed many elements of both my AS years; I've kind of regretted staying for this year at A level. It's hard to explain, I think it's because I don't like how things are run in my college and I'm fed up of being in education. As for university, my sister went and got a degree. She hasn't used it yet, but has worked her way up in a different job, which she probably would have done without the degree. I'm not going to university.
Im about to start my second semester in my first year at uni.. and i hate it. The funny thing is the course is ok but the people and the uni and the area are so horrible so I'm reapplying for a new uni in the next week! If i dont get in Im screwed because I wont know what the hell to do! (Im the same cos I want to do drama and I dont think uni will get me any more money or any better chances to make it),.
Uni is a difficult subject for me too.. I'm in my third year doing Ceramics and Glass, and I have thought that it has been a bit of a waste (nearly £20k to be stressed lots and dissertation etc is shite).. But I have learnt how to blow glass (which is really freakin' cool) and wanting to go into that as a career (placement in the isle of wight this summer woo!) so I spose it hasn't been all bad ^^
@ThisIsStephaniee fool. If you want to be a journalist do politics or economics, or better yet a joint honours in both or either with philosophy. The ideal course would be PPE.
I too have just finished uni and like you wonder how better off I am now in terms of my career, however I don't regret going as I feel I've grown as a person as a result
university is good FOR me because I'm becoming a nurse and therefore employed for the rest of my life.
university is bad TO me because I have no life, constantly stressed, constantly on youtube trying to find funny things to distract me, it's how i found you.
Bet you never thought uni would be good to you eh?
I'm in my fourth year of university... I'll be graduating in june with a bachelors in respiratory therapy.. I swear the university years were the best and the worse... you have ups and you have downs... always trying to get good marks and all, then trying to spend time with your friends. The first year you always party hardy and your grades show for it lol... well atleast that's what happened to me. Anyways I'll be very happy once it's done for sure but I'll always appreciate the time i got
Funny thing: For years I felt ashamed that I didn't have the opportunity to go to college. Then, one day, as I sat around a table in our greenroom at Disney listening to my fellow "classically trained" actors gripe about their student loans, I woke up.
"Hey~!" I thought. "I am in the SAME SHOW as you folks and I don't owe a THING!"
i'm in Swansea uni studying Zoology (2nd year). Amazing place. Amazing people. but.....for 18-20,000? well i'd expect by degree to be gold plated. and handed to me by buddist monks wearing tutus.
I'm about three weeks from graduation so I'm asking myself the same question right now. I'm about to finish BFA Television Production and whilst I know a lot more about working in film and tv than I did before I have no idea what I'm going to be doing with myself in a month's time, which of course is nerve wracking. Also, Australia has the end of the scholarly year and the end of the calendar year.
im in my 5th year...final year...there are like no jobs for civil engineers atm...less u get amazing results...so i dont know what im going to do after i graduate...sucks
i just started my 1st year at huddersfield uni, contemporary visual arts, it's killing me already, it's barely even about making your own art anymore, it's more. here you can draw this, dunt really care if thats not how you draw, and reading up on artists and there bullshit ideas of art! either way, patrick stewart ;) he best come to graduation, i know he has in past a couple of times.
hahah. i'm in 2nd year and i often wonder what i'm doing in uni. by the time i graduate i'll be about $20,000 in debt (and, just like you said, i spend a bunch of my loans on alcohol and partying haha) with a degree that i'm not sure i really need. but i was raised in a town that made us believe uni was the only way to success..so here i am.
i often think about dropping out, but i figure i'm halfway there so i might as well just get it all done..
@laylabojangles Its almost exactly the same for me. I can't remember ever deciding to go to uni, I just was never really led to believe there was another option. I figure I'm more than halfway through now so I might as well finish, but it is a constant worry that I will fail a subject and all that time and money will have been for nothing, or that I will leave uni and be no more employable than I was when I started.
I live in Derby :) can't believe you went to Derby Uni though, Im surprised its not the worst uni in the UK lmao and it smelling of weed and milk being robbed sounds exactly right
I'm a third year, and I'm gonna be you this time next year! It's scary!! I won't have any loan to spend next year.. I'll have to actually work for some money.
Uni's not purely about the certificate though, it's about the social side of it aswell, so just think of it as paying for friends aswell.. though your lack of friends in your videos makes me think either you can't afford them, or your rate is too low.
I know exactly how you feel. I did a film and TV course and I am completely no further forward. Had I gone straight into the industry when I left sixth form I'd've been much, much better off.
The French have a saying. I think it's something to do with small cabbages. Sprouts?
I like you Chris. I think you're really funny and talented. How are you putting your degree to use? I don't know how it works so this might be a stupid question. Do you go to theaters and try to get parts? Would you consider moving to Hollywood and finding an agency (or whatever one does to get into television commercials and such)?
well im kinda nervous because i know i want to go into film making and i have done a bunch of research and i think university would just be a wast and im better of just going to a three year degree arts school
Oh my Jesus, how old must that make you? I assumed you were like 22 max, but after a 3 year degree and 2 'false' starts wouldn't that make you at least 23? I'm not too sure why I care that much. Hoping to do medicine (2011 entry) :)
I wanted to hear more about this! I'm thinking of doing theatre too. So. . . you would say. . . a university or college does not help? I think you should keep going for it though! Your amazing and you already have so many fans. : 3
I'm with you on college.... er, "uni". My field is one where a degree looks good on applications, but I really don't feel like I'm learning anything at all.
I'm a third year and to be honest I think the degree has put me further ahead than some people but these days everyone is getting a degree so basically i'm going to have to do a masters when I finish to set my self apart frome veryone else in the work place.
going to university to study to be either a Midwife or an Operating Department Practioner :) Start next Sept! Im a known as a "Mature Student" as im starting Uni when im older! Not sure how this makes me more mature!
I'm going to Uni to be an artist, it seems like I was an artist before Uni, but i'll have it in paper. I sort of want to get a PhD so I can be a Doctor Artist
I feel like 3 years at university... way better than 4 in the US!!! Unless, like your currency, your years are worth 1.5 of American years cuz... then I guess you end up going longer? like 4.5? So go US then?
I'm in my first year of uni and I'm doing a double degree in communication studies and commerce. Most of the units I'm taking are pretty fun, but there's also compulsory units we have to take which are very time consuming.
I did 3 years doing 'Drama Studies' at DMU. It was fun, but a waste of time in terms of getting a job at the end of it to pay of the MASSIVE debt at the end.
I always said I wouldn't work in an office for the rest of my life.
Currently unemployed, what work am I looking for? OFFICE WORK!
But being on a drama course was really fun because of the interaction with everyone else on the course. We were like one big happy family :)
I would like to be an actor, and the first thing I want to do is go to Sydney and audition for a part in Neighbours because, well I'm Australian an to be honest, you don't get famous unless you are on that god forsaken show.
I would like you to do a video on little things that you hate, like I hate it that when I'm watching a movie the person next to me that's been there the whole time as well keeps asking me questions like "Who's that?" "So who just got killed?" "Is she pregnant!?"
No uni for me....college, but it is my third year there, so that starts for something.
Funnily enough I did want to do acting, but for the points that you mentioned where the reasons why I never studied it. It does seem rather dry once you start to study it personally. So I took up design, its a fun world.
I've almost finished my second year in an Animal Science course, and all it's really done for me so far is deferred my transition into the "real" world of responsibility and bills and full time employment. I changed my mind about 6 months ago, but have decided to finish this degree and maybe work part time while studying what I really want to (creative writing, although I get the feeling that it's kinda like acting, and all the study in the world isn't as good as actually doing it).
Finished last may went to a private uni in london so paid wayyyy more than you did. Had a lot of fun and got a marketing degree in my spare time lol. 2:1 as well but guess what, yet to get a real job almost a year later. I've been waiting nearly all my life to go back home to England to study in University but I'm constantly held back by student loans policies. Law is great although we're what? 1800 in my class alone so imagine the atmosphere of that.
lostinbloodyparis 3 months ago
I think most creative university courss need to be more focussed on teaching you skills that are of use in the real wold of work. And I think courses should have much better links with the industry they're meant to be training you up to enter. Degrees should I think generaly be more like apprenticeships.

I'm a freshman at my university.. I study movies, "movie science". It sounds awesome, right? At first, it was.. I was in heaven, since I'm a movie freak and watching/making videos is probably my life, sad enough... but I don't feel like studying this - I'm automatically will get job on a movie set... and wasting my time studying doesn't feel right...

I'm at my second day of university, ridiculous for me to even make assumptions yet but it's honestly not all that it's cracked up to be..
All the people I share my halls with are nice people and everything but I don't "click" with them if you know what I mean?
I also feel kind of homesick, I'm not that far from home but still too far away for me to go home at the weekends etc..
Hopefully once I get into the flow of things it will get better..

Going to university makes more sense if a person has a job in mind that does definitely require that further education. If a person doesn't know what they want to do (like me) or can find a different route to where they want to go that is less expensive, then there's no point in going to university. Yeah! that's my take on it. :D
Samphie7 11 months ago
I've spent three years in college doing AS/A levels. I have enjoyed many elements of both my AS years; I've kind of regretted staying for this year at A level. It's hard to explain, I think it's because I don't like how things are run in my college and I'm fed up of being in education. As for university, my sister went and got a degree. She hasn't used it yet, but has worked her way up in a different job, which she probably would have done without the degree. I'm not going to university.

I wonder who was the smarter one after all...?

I'm about to finish BFA Television Production and whilst I know a lot more about working in film and tv than I did before I have no idea what I'm going to be doing with myself in a month's time, which of course is nerve wracking. Also, Australia has the end of the scholarly year and the end of the calendar year.

hahah. i'm in 2nd year and i often wonder what i'm doing in uni. by the time i graduate i'll be about $20,000 in debt (and, just like you said, i spend a bunch of my loans on alcohol and partying haha) with a degree that i'm not sure i really need. but i was raised in a town that made us believe uni was the only way to success..so here i am.
i often think about dropping out, but i figure i'm halfway there so i might as well just get it all done..
laylabojangles 1 year ago
@laylabojangles Its almost exactly the same for me. I can't remember ever deciding to go to uni, I just was never really led to believe there was another option. I figure I'm more than halfway through now so I might as well finish, but it is a constant worry that I will fail a subject and all that time and money will have been for nothing, or that I will leave uni and be no more employable than I was when I started.

I would like you to do a video on little things that you hate, like I hate it that when I'm watching a movie the person next to me that's been there the whole time as well keeps asking me questions like "Who's that?" "So who just got killed?" "Is she pregnant!?"
