This is covers done right. The Who are untouchable, obviously, but Pearl Jam nails it. After The Who themselves, they are probably the best at doing their songs.
Outstanding. I have to be honest, I wasn't much of a PJ fan until I watched PJ 20 on Netflix. This is one good band. Shame I more or less missed out on the first 20 years. I knew of the "hits" but that was the extent of it. Looks like I have a lot of catching up to do. Wow. Helluva performance there.
@OSUalum41 I am sure it will be a great time for you, as none of their best songs (except Black) ever got any radio airplay. And remember, if someone doesn't like Pearl Jam, it is because Pearl Jam doesn't want them to!!!!
MY OPINION IS THAT EDDIE VEDDER CAN SING ANYTHING. HE DOES JIM MORRISON VERY WELL ALSO. I FEEL HE DID IT BETTER THAN THE WHO. DONT WANT TO START ANYTHING, ITS JUST MY OPINION............................
Eddie and Pearl Jam just get it. They undersatand the heart of this song. "Love Reign O'er Me" has to be delivered like a punch to the gut and they nail it. Love it... love it .... love it ...
Seeing PJ play Baba O'Reilly as an up-and-coming band and then seeing them play this for The Who at the rock honors a decade later is just incredible to me.
@Ricsard --Sean Penn...you mean the Marxist intellectual reprobate? Probably one of the most deluded assholes I have ever listened to. I remember he declared that all private property should be taken away from any landowner in Haiti after the earthquake. I wonder what his response is going to be if and when one of his million dollars estates is damaged in an earthquake in California and Chairman Obama uses the power of the military to do that to him?
Thanks for posting this!! Could you possibly cut the introduction part from Sean Penn?? Or ANYONE else? It's a great performance-- someone already clipped it to just the second song here, but it's grating on the ears to try to add this to a playlist for listening while doing other things. I love the Who! I love Pearl Jam!! I just hate all the yakking (and really, WTF does Penn have to do with it anyway)!?! If I knew how to do this with my own PC I wouldn't ask. Please?
@wingseclipsed Sean Penn and Eddie Vedder are really close friends. I'm sure Vedder and Townsend both asked for Sean to introduce Pearl Jam thats what he has to do with them. And also Sean Penn has directed 2 of the movies for which Eddie Vedder made soundtracks for.
PJ owned Love reign o're me... best cover of The Who I've heard in a while... The real me rocked as well... Eddies voice is so powerful... impossible not to rock out to these guys!!!!!!
Instead of this being an absolutely piss poor crowd, I prefer to think of them so awed by the angelic voice of Vedder, they were rendered unable to move...
@shortyirish I know him good enough, Pearl Jam is one of my favorite bands. To bad he smokes too much lately and is grasping for air when singing live these days. He could really get it back if he would quit smoking.
@omegalen Unbelievable, check out Water on the Road, he sounds great. I saw them live for 1st time in 98 and as recent as Sept of 09. He can sing the old songs as good as he ever did, but he has learned some new tricks. I'm starting to think you are a smoker nazi ;-)
@marrdw Yeah but those are performances from 2008, they sounds great. But i'm talking about how he sounds now (2011) Check out some vids from the tour they are doing, and you will hear it. They even tune "Do The Evolution" down a half step. And no i'm not a smoker nazi lol.

@omegalen In Canada he sound like he was having some voice problems, but check the videos from de LA tour, he is amazing, same voice from 20years ago....
I went to the show in CR and was absolutely amazing, he sang Once, Jeremy, Oceans, Alive, Deep and it was like listening to the Ten album.... JUST GREAT!
Probably 18 yrs ago while waiting tables in Seattle, PJ sat at one of my tables, all afternoon we talked about what a GOD Pete is. To say that they get "Love Reign O'er Me" and it's impact on one's life is an understatement. You can only sing this song from the depth of your very soul. This just fuckin' rips!

@ 3:43...wow...never thought Eddie'd be able to make that one! Nice work all around, i thought. never would have picked pearl jam to do this song, but they did a respectable job!
It's silly to waste time comparing two great bands and vocalists. But I think many people would agree that there are few, if any, bands that could cover these songs so well. What Roger and Eddie both have is amazing lung capacity. Wish I was at the show.
Wow i just realized how mnuch Pearl Jam owns the Who anyday...- The who may be more legendary of course heroic. In fact, the who made rock what it is today, do not get me wrong. - But I've been watching Roger's 1970 performances, and recent ones, any year...Not once has he been able to hit that D that Eddie can do so well...And Eddie's vocal fry/screamo/etc. is mastered, roger's has never been mastered :l. - It's hard to say this but Eddie destroys roger any day XDDD....Amazing performance here!
I love Eddie Vedder, hes voice is just amazing, i mean i can't find a single live video where he doesn't sing at hes best, the man is truly blessed, legend.
And you can see how much he respects and love The Who, he even put a shirt and some white pants on, lol, thats haute couture for him!
This performance as a re-run on was the first time ever heard it. Was housecleaning at the time and had the show as background. This performance stop my cleaning and left me in an emotional stuper like that of the best drug run ever...SIMPLY AWESOME! The who may have wrote it and deserves top honors, but Pearl Jam touched my soul with it. So hats off to them both!!
That isn't the guitar that Tom Petty gave to Mike that gets smashed at the end is it? That would be disappointing. Excellent covers though. Pearl Jam never fails to impress.
@JOSKE123100 Agreed, 100%. He puts more emotion into his music than anyone else. Pearl Jam has been rocking for 20 years, and shows no signs of stopping.
@JOSKE123100 I refuse to compare one great artist with another... like sayin' a whale breaching is greater than an eagle landing. that said, eddie vedder is definitely in my top 3 favorite vocalists that come to mind right now. I've seen him numerous times and every show leaves you wanting more... peace.
Great tribute to the greatest hard rock band, concept album and early bass soloist. What a rich combination of youth angst and cerebral outpouring, stunning.
Eddie is amazing here. Blew my mind wow. The whole band did fantastic. Eddie's ability and emotion is unmatched. I think I have a new FAVORITE singer. :)
I have always felt pretty strong connections between Pearl Jam and The Who. Both are great and I really like The Who, but in my opinion Pearl Jam out-did the original with this performance!
Pearl Jam are the polar opposite to what a poser is. This is an outstanding tribute from a great band to one of the greatest bands the world has ever known. I will never understand any who fan or Pearl Jam fan for that matter who says they dont like this.
@mandingo9999998: You are retarded, you have obviously never heard him play. It's amazing. And maybe he's spastic because he has chron's disease and is a recovering alcoholic/drug user
Sounds good... LOL but just think.... It is taking this huge array of instruments to achieve the sound that one singer and 3 muscians made back in the day....
I don't know who the 13 a-holes who didn't like this were, but you're probably bitter musicians, who wish you could do something half as good, on the best day in your life!! This is one of the best live performances EVER!!!!
@shensol1 Yeah. Gotta agree. The Who is my favorite band of all time. I will argue to the death...there'd be no punk movement without The Who. Or at the very least, it would've looked/sounded much different. The Who rocked harder/louder/more emotional in '68 than any emo/screamo/metal/pop-punk hybrid of the last two decades. That said - this performance (and how Eddie handles the impossible vocals) is so fucking good it makes me wanna slap a baby.
@nipsyrussell. There is no punk, no grunge and therefor no Pearl Jam without the Who. Hell, you and I would probably be very different without the Who as well.
Having Quadrophenia as my favorite all-time album and not a listener of Pearl Jam I was very negative going into watching this. But I have to say not bad - drumming is pretty good, some nice bass on Real Me and altogether it doesn't sound far off of the original Quad album.
That said the main singer (I guess eddie vedder) with his dark screechiness is annoying, if not for that it would be quote spot on.
@paxgamers what do you mean "the main singer (i guess eddie vedder)." He's the singer bro. And if you can or know anyone who can capture the essence of this song vocally like he did on this night then you're my fucking hero. I look forward to seeing your post with "the main singer.. i guess."
@shensol1 Yeah I know he's the singer. It's just a matter of taste. I personally thought that instrument wise it was very impressive. I guess I wasn't as positive because the screechy part of his voice ended up annoying me and made my comment more negative.
But aside from that, from base guitar drums and vocals it is very likely to be the best possible representation of that song.
Mother Love Bone was the greatest , it's a shame Andy Wood died !
But the remaining members were fortunate to find a singer in San Diego named Eddie Vedder !

I have a fairly well- trained ear, and I still can't hear why Stone is on stage for this.

That said the main singer (I guess eddie vedder) with his dark screechiness is annoying, if not for that it would be quote spot on.
paxgamers 7 months ago
@paxgamers what do you mean "the main singer (i guess eddie vedder)." He's the singer bro. And if you can or know anyone who can capture the essence of this song vocally like he did on this night then you're my fucking hero. I look forward to seeing your post with "the main singer.. i guess."

@shensol1 I AGREEE!!!!
vicfra64 7 months ago
@shensol1 Yeah I know he's the singer. It's just a matter of taste. I personally thought that instrument wise it was very impressive. I guess I wasn't as positive because the screechy part of his voice ended up annoying me and made my comment more negative.
But aside from that, from base guitar drums and vocals it is very likely to be the best possible representation of that song.

Song starts at 1:29.
Someone edit the song so that the intro and other song aren't in the video damit! D:>
