  • thats awsome

  • Had to be euthenized after he fell in his paddock (broke his shoulder I think).the meadowlands has the most rigorous testing just the trainers there are years ahead of the testing game

  • Saw this live on TV that night. A week or so earlier Holborn Hanover prepped for this by blowing past a good field by 10-20 lengths.

  • WAS A VERY GOOD HORSE...

  • This horse is dead? What a shame. Anyone know the circumstances? This race is the definition of blazing speed! I don't think a horse on the planet could've beaten him on this day! Looks like he wanted to run all day!

  • @Tampaslice if i remember correctly it was a training accident

  • @Tampaslice He died following complications from surgery to repair a fractured cannon bone.

  • George Brennan a.k.a. "The Minister of Speed", RULES!

  • the drug testing is more rigorous in the Meadowlands? are you kidding me?..if it is then they have the smartest trainers on the planet...2 names for you...Holborn Hanover and the classic example...Art Official

  • Holborn Hanover was a good horse but he was in no way a world record setter....its a shame he wound up in the hands of people who dont care about their horses..only money...and now hes dead...a shame but not a surprise

  • Cambests connections refused a drug test after his time trial and they have a history of positive tests...all im saying

  • RIP Holby,

  • RIP little one

  • good horse that got into hands of training family that gets suspensions for years at a time.not even in the top 50 of all time.gassed up horses by degenerate trainers taking away from the true greats.pathetic.

  • What's the name of the track announcer at Meadowlands?

  • ken warkentin. there's also a trotter named after him, stands in ontario i believe

  • In this race that's actually Sam Mckee, we used to perform seminars together when he was a thoroughbred announcer at Ladbroke DRC in the 90's in Livonia, MI.

  • Holborn did get a positive after the American National at Balmoral following this.... Notice how he's going nowhere near how he was last year.... Just thought I'd point that out.... Breeding does have a lot to do with it, but drugs too, sadly, are becoming a part of this sport....

  • My understanding is that the drug positive was for a non-performance enhancing drug.

  • Better tracks, bikes and veterinary care are contributing factors, but its all about the breeding! With sires and grandsires LIKE Niatross, its only going to get better. As far as Eastern Canada goes, 30 years ago there were 700-800 stakes horses nominated, resulting in 2-3 divisions in each class. Today, with less horses nominated for the stakes season, the number of divisions has jumped to 7-8 in some cases. Typical example of what breeding has become in 21st Century Harness Racing

  • Better tracks, bikes and veterinary care do contribute a little bit but breeding is not the reason why everything has changed so darastically. Drugs are the main reason why records are being broken etc. Nothing more then drugs.

  • Thoroughbred racing has not improved in the same way- perhaps because of more rigorous drug testing? I don't know much about harness racing, but I do know that if a tb ran a mile and a half in 2.18 (which is a comparable level improvement)it would certainly be down to drugs.

  • In harness racing the drug testing is more rigorous than in tb racing, specially in Meadowlands.

  • To bad most drugs are synthetic and don't show on raceday. The only time you can test for them is a week out from the race when they are administered

  • Question: How can there be a three second drop in the time trial mile from Niatoss' 149.1 in 1980 to Cambest's 146.1 in 1993. This is one breeding generation from Cam Fella (a contemporary of Niatross).

It can't be breeding. Is it bikes, track conditions, training, drugs?

Someone who knows something about Harness Racing enlighten me.

    Thanks

  • That's a heck of a pace! I've been away from Harness Racing a few years. What accounts for the time drop since Niatross' great marks in the early 1980s--Better tracks, better bikes, better training methods? Are the pacers today qualitatively better than Niatross?

  • Niatross won 35 races in a row and did a work in 149.1 in 1979 when the turns weren't banked and the bikes were heavier. To me he's the greatest of all time.

  • Compare this world record to the one Niatross did at Hollywood Park. There in 1980, Niatross set the World Record at 1:52.1, won by 10 lengths, and it was an anticipated event with lots of excitement. Go to 2006, Holborn Hanover pops a 1:46.4, wins by (only!!) 1 length, and the announcer sounds surprised that he set a world record. What a difference 26 years makes!

  • Well said!

  • This horse have been defenitly juiced as hell.

  • wow. 146.4. that is a thorughbred 1 mile time. can you believe it? fastest 1 mile I ever would believe. he ran 26.0 the final eight of a mile. thats fast.

  • @matt99nascar WTW in the 09 Breeders Crown came home in 25.3 off the same type of fractions not surprising really

  • He did not get positive from this one yet?

  • What a great horse

  • Impressive...what a horse!
