  • to borrow a line from Matt Taibbi...

the Military-Industrial Complex is like "a great vampire squid wrapped around the face of humanity, relentlessly jamming its blood funnel into anything that smells like money"

  • 24% of are 'gdp' comes from top one percent of highest earners. That is bad economics.

  • Tax cut has to be paid for.

    Dumbass right wing douchebags.

  • Klein is an ignorant reactionary. The criminal State sector has been expanding, not contracting. She promotes criminal socialism, she is a fraud.

  • @qwertypoiu4321 Alright post your evidence.

  • @harkyo One of the first lies in her book is about Katrina, where criminal schools went from 127 to 4, then back up to 47 the next year; she lies and says there are now only at 4, with 33 charter schools. As I said, "she is a fraud." Anything that violates the Non-Coercion Principle is criminal, and should be charged as such.

  • @qwertypoiu4321 I guess I am criminal then, for taking utilitarian type moral principles. I would coerce 1 person to save 5 if no other options were available.

  • Comment removed

  • @qwertypoiu4321 Hear Hear!!!!

  • @nihongo02341 I know not being able to commit coercion may upset a stalinist thug like yourself, but that does not change the fact committing coercion is still immoral.

  • one of the main reasons the government is sucking up so much money folks, is that so much taxpayer money is going to things like pro-sports, walmart, black-water, Exxon, Aegis, the list goes on and on and on. This idea that goverment is bad, and that private outsoursing is better flies in the face of the insane costs involved.

  • @wotmot223 The state just needs to give tax cuts and cut spending. Stop the spend.

  • Milton friedman is a crock, his advice and doctrines are horeshit. They essentialy are based on the idea that the very rich are justified in doing what ever keeps them rich, and F*** the poor. I was fan of Friendman for years, till I opened my mind and looked at what his philosphies resulted in.

  • Chile is doing better only for the rich, as Nazi Germany was doing great for the Nazis, as fascism was great for those obeying and following Franco un Spain. This woman is a genius, and it's pathetic seeing "old school" servile gringo wannabes saying that Chile is doing great....

  • I agree with her (somewhat) on the Iraq part... but Social Security is the core of the state? You must be joking. This woman is way over her head.

Maybe someone should tell Ms. Klein that the government's share of GDP has been steadily growing over the past several decades, such that almost the MAJORITY of our gross domestic product is being consumed by the government.

That hardly seems like a dying, limbless octopus.

But let us not allow facts to sully a perfectly inane lecture.

  • You can't beat Naomi! She hits the nail on the head every time!

  • @Doegab uhhhh.... Thanks to General Pinochet and Milton Friedman?

  • @erdanidi pinochet's economic liberalization had nothing to do with his restrictions of civil and political freedoms and killing of 3000 people. friedman, just like a TRUE liberal, was for all types of liberalization (civil, economic and political) and was against state terror.

  • @bonfirejovi fuck yeah. i'm from Chile, and i know the progress made here. i'm tired of all these people bashing Friedman for ill founded reasons. besides, if she had released her book while Friedman was alive, she wouldn't have stood a chance against him on any kind of discussion. it is the duty of people who know the truth to protect it. good job

  • @goPistons06 How old are you, Chilean?

  • @goPistons06 How old are you, Chilean? Are you an indigenous Chilean, or a moneyed, Euro-American Chilean?

  • @harkyo what's your point?

  • Blackwater gets at least 90% of it's revenue from Government contracts. That means that the company is paid for by either American's tax money or devaluation of American dollars (inflation). As a capitalist, I actually sympathize with her disdain against Blackwater. The only disagreement I have with her is rhetorical.

  • She tries to pin the entire war on Free Market Capitalism in order to portray it as evil, but blackwater wouldn't be able to operate any activities in Iraq without the U.S. government taxing citizens in order to pay for those operations.

  • could disentangle all her incorrect, fundamental definitions and conceptions.

  • French-Canadian brunettes are always on the hot side.

That being said, her thesis is the height of absurdity; it is necessarily a non-sequitur. What's more, the Bush administration EXPANDED gov't. Further privatization is not a fearful proposition btw. She also incorrectly utilizes the concept of "legalizing pillaging" or 'plunder' as Bastiat wrote. This woman could actually become something more consistent intellectually if she

  • what a shit head.

  • "The strip-mining of the state," she says!

The state only exists by looting. Everything they have has been stolen from the producers. That isn't colonialism? As she says, "it legalizes pillage." She's all for it, but pretends to be against it?

Then she mentions welfare and social security, both of which are also examples of looting, strip-mining "colonialism". Apparently, she thinks that opposing looting and pillaging IS looting and pillaging. Unbelievable.

    What a propagandist!

  • @MillionthUsername Referring to yourself? Yes, you are quite the free-market propagandist.

  • @Zenthik I am proud to be called a free market propagandist.

Free markets are the result of the voluntary exchanges of free people.

Therefore, I am happy to spread the ideals of liberty far and wide.

But my comment was directed at the communist's contradictions

and incoherent ramblings about the state.

  • The relationship between Government and Industry is an incestuous one that tends to err in favour of the rich and powerful. If the purpose of industrial growth is to distribute equitably the wealth it creates, by providing employment etc, then the impoverished sectors of society around the world have a bright future.

Statistics given by organisations dedicated to the free market capitalist model often show very convincing figures that argue the above is true but we live in a fog of statistics.

  • @tellelephone thanks for one of the only sober headed remarks. The statistics are misleading in that gross domestic product and gross national income are up on average, but the numbers of poor also go up, and the property of the poor decreases. And in cases like Mexico, the poorest are fleeing the country en masse. But, the numbers are distorted by the huge revenue generated by massive industry.

  • @direwolf661 I have just completed reading a series of books (I've set myself an arduous read list) that touch on the Military Industrial Complex. The last of the series is Deception by Adrian Levy. WOW, its not just statistics my dear friend, its intelligence reports mangled by CIA operatives to radically tilt US foreign policy, its about deceiving the Senate, manipulation of news, silencing dissent, destroying the reputation of high profile investigators within the Administration network ...

  • American socialism never eh?!? stupid american destroy my Europe-

  • There ideas have taken hold to a certain extent and they have worked very well when they were. The problem is that as human beings it is we have a desire to say this is a problem lets pass a law and fix it. It does not matter if the law is ineffective or even if it will lead to tyranny that is our first response and it is very hard for humans to look at the big picture. But, we must.

  • Nike is tearing down and privatizing my neighborhood and local university. I have six videos posted here at Youtube about it. To find them use the Youtube search with keywords:nike university of oregon.

  • naomi is a moron. period. spreading lies and conspiracy theories to her idiotic liberal followers.

  • davidngo4415 - if idiotic liberal ideas = ppl having food to eat vs Monsanto Gm food, homes to live in, peace vs war, health vs medical industrial complex, Nations having the right to develope their own countries using their own resources for themselves without economic hit men interventions, and vulture funds, then idiotic liberal ideas is the way to go, unless of course you are one of those have mores, or wannabe have mores that don't really care about anyone but yourself and your cronnies?

  • What do you have against Monsanto? They have only done what mankind has done for thousands of years, moved agriculture forward by breeding plants with ideal characteristics and creating more nutritious and plentiful food for a growing population. Naomi Klein has laughed at Mongolians for worring about ending starvation suggestion healthcare and control of oil is more important.

  • It's painful to listen to her.

  • like a really bad busker with a bongo

  • All these ideologies from left to right wing cant be taken in their pure form. It has to have a part of everything. Why people in the states should pay for healthcare??? The Bush administration have put about millions of billions dollars into war and in the FED (private Central bank BTW), which is enough money to avoid poverty all around the world. All that money has been spent in only 8 years. All that money is serving private interests, no way it is serving the American people.

  • Socialism originally means that people take care of others, not only themselves. On the other hand, people should grow up to this system. Not enough to talk about, but to do for that. Since people are selfish, socialism doesn't work. Not to mention capitalism is a wrong system, but at least ... works. Serious thing, to avoid savage capitalism.

  • No, it means state-control of the means of production.

  • I sometimes will wake up to Democracy now on this blank cable channel that for the majority of the day is a static picture. Im guessing theres a 5th colum working in the cable company who knows im sleeping and wants to wake me up. Becoming people again after years of sleeping beliveing that all thats been given to me is the truth, Its much more then this polorisation between diametric perspectives. Cutting through the shit is a DrySuit now more then the hipwaiters of the pre internet. 5 stars.

  • So, you're more willing to pay big shots with you tax who doesn't need that money and guess what when you lay off money workers, how can you explain that phenomenon? Why poor are sicker than rich, is that evident to you. You prefer to give money to mercenary who cost much more money than soldiers. Give free health care for people with tax cost less than war. If you had a financial problem, you would be happy to benefit from the social health care.

  • Ms. Klein's book was very well researched and supported by historical fact. Nothing she says was "torpedoed" by Ron Paul's opposition to the war in Iraq. The war was fought because of the greed and corruption of private oil and weapons companies who pay our politicans.

  • She build her whole argument on the "shock doctrine" of Milton Friedman, that the Iraq war provided that shock. But her whole assumptation is largely torpedoed by the fact that true and honest free marketeers like Thomas Friedman, Ron Paul and many conservative-libertarians were AGAINST the Iraq war from the start!

  • I would vote for her if she runs for the prisident.

  • maybe you should move to n korea or venezuela where communism is more developed.

  • I'm okay where I live, in fact I'm for the capitalism only when it's good for my business and I'm for the socialism only when it's good for my business.

  • ha you reveal your ignorance. when is socialism ever good for business?

  • Ok, when you got free health care, when the government pay your education. Can you tell why the big shots can get any subsidies from the government? When the eletric company belong to the government, you get a quick fix instead of private company. Because the government won't be out of business, it doesn't matter to the government to pay the damage and the CEO is afraid to be out of business is it evident ot you?

  • free health care? nothings free you pay it in tax dollars. why not cut taxes so you can spend the money yourself for health care of your choice instead of shitty bureaucratic regulated way overpriced healthcare? when the government owns businesses they operate less efficiently which results in low quality goods and services at higher costs that you and me pay for in direct taxes like income tax and also indirect inflation tax because spending weakens the currency.money doesnt grow on trees.

  • You apparently do not understand what modern scientific socialism is.

  • what?socialism is socialism regardless of how the theory is derived.russia and china have proven that marxist socialism doesnt work.the benifits of capitalism far outweigh its disadvantages and is much more fundamentally progressive than socialism.i dont think klein talked that much about disaster socialsim and the shock effect that has brought about massive regulation, gov spending throughout history.only a very small part of industrialized nations like usa are corrupt unlike smaller nations.

  • you have no idea what you are talking about- one small example- you pay far more my friend for private healthcare than I do for social healthcare. The US has the most ineffecient healthcare system in the west. Also- russia and china were not marxist they were leninist and maoist respectivley- all you are doing is spouting neoliberal rhetoric

  • i guess your from europe or canada, well i dont know how much you pay but i can bet that you wont get anywhere near the quality of healthcare in the usa. our healthcare is inefficient because it is loaded with bureaucracy and regulation.and lenninism and maoism are forms of marxism.history has proven that socialism is doomed to fail.

  • Neither Stalinist Russia nor Maoist China or todays China represent Socialism in any form what so ever. Totalatarian governance is incompatabal with the Socialist ideal. Both Marx and Engles post 1848 denounced violent revolution and spoke of democracy as the way. Socialism today is a democratic movement that demands social justice. It is scientificly flexible since no single solution will meet any communities individual needs. It was the Socialists who de-centralized France for example.

  • Democratic socialism is a paradox. Sure Marx predicted that a state would become socialist through a democratic process but when it is socialist it is no longer democratic and socialism of any form uses violence and coercion.and the flexibility you talk about is impractical because there is no way a single entity can process the vast amounts of information that are required to make solutions which markets are remarkably effective and efficient at doing.

  • You do not speak for today's Democratic Socialists; their party platforms do my friend, read them. Until you do, you are just spouting garbage. A pure market society is as utopian and nutty as a pure communist society, neither functions with adequate protection to the individual. Also, you pick and chose your Marx, read Marx and Engels after the 1848 revolutions as I suggested. Effective, "Free Trade" today is killing millions with price controls on HIV medications, or Free Market Genocide.

  • Price controls are not free trade but trade distorting policies and they are designed by HIV victims in the west, man of whom believe that Africa should receive government aid. Good people are distorting the market to help everyone not realizing that it hurt everyone or even that they are doing it.

  • I don't think she hesitates, I think she's just breathing, mate. She's excellent, don't try and use ad hominems to refute her argument against capitalism.

  • @conspiriTori she has no arguments against capitalism, only against corporatism. also you cry about ad hominem but if you read her "shock"ingly ignorant attempt to defame milton friedman, you would see that her main attack is ad hominem. she either hasnt read any of friedman's books or she is too stupid to understand what he actually said. oh and btw, anyone who is wondering... her parents were infact communists. its a shame that she was so cowardly as to release the book after he died.

  • Read the Shock Doctrine,a real eye opener.

  • formceo remember the 1960's? Millions were marching in the streets for civil right, end of Vietnam war, environmental regulations.

There was no food stamps, health care, or social programs for millions of working Americas.

The social upheaval of the 60's brought about civil rights legislation, environmental protection, food stamps, health care, an end the imperialist war.

Much was accomplished but much was left to do. Now much has been lost!

We are headed back to the 60's again!

  • Nope, we're in the 2000s, continuing what was started in the 60s. Same problems, now intensified, with new realities brought to light. We've got a fight on our hands, it looks like.

It's so seriously troubling when we consider the truths laid before us, documented truths, that tell a story of corruption embedded within a system we trusted, the core of American politics. And the lie we the people were buying, that some still are.

    It's hard to find words...

  • Before that people were rioting in the ghettos because they did not even have food little lone health care!

Looks like we are heading back toward extreme poverty and the social upheaval that will follow!

  • The US has for profit health care! The US system is funded by for profit insurance corporations.

Take the profit out and it will be more efficient and less expensive and less corrupt and everyone can be covered for less money!

  • Aristotle once said that without capital, there can be no charity. Why is it more noble for government to decide where capital should be allocated? Redistribution of wealth requires coercive confiscation by government whereas charity involves mutual exchange. A free market is the only arena where mutual exchange can occur. Side note...the current health care system was created in the early 70's by the government. Before that, health care was cheap b/c moral hazard was not present.

  • Just look at the mess privatized health care is in the US.

We need single payer universal health care like the rest of the industrialized world.

Privatized prisons are a disaster. We lock up a larger percentage of our population than any other country in the world. It done for profit!

    Naomi Kline is fine!

  • lol wut? Excuse me, but in case you haven't noticed...the U.S. DOES NOT HAVE PRIVATIZED HEALTH CARE! The Corporatism supports health insurance companies and Big Business is favored. That is not privatization alone...it is corrupted with Corporate Welfare.

And many universal, single-payer health care systems lead to long waiting lines and people losing lives because of it. Not to mention declining quality and increasing cost.

  • I don't get what point she was making with the guns-to-caviar example. How do we derive magnitude simply by identifying direction of growth. Simply because the sale of "guns" and "caviar" is up does not mean the sales are particularly large, they may be %0.05 up. Klein uses widely generalized theory to make specific accusations without any solid facts.Using Kleinian logic to illustrate my point. If the percentage of criminals is higher among black does that mean blacks are inherently deviant

  • I am so sick of these idiot socialists just making up their own theories with an absence of evidence and a absence of understanding of economics.

35 year old campaign????!!!! She is objectively retarded. Property rights in America were destroyed in after 1934 once Hugo Black was elected to the Supreme Court.

Her statism philosophy has killed more people than Cancer.

  • You want to talk about "statism"? all the statism I've seen recently has come from the Right Wing. They're so frightened they trust the federal government to waste the entire world rather than jeopardize their suburban townhouses and SUVs. The militarist right wing in the US LOVES big government. Which goes back to what klein's saying: the cons want father figures like bush and Giuliani to protect them. it's just too bad you're killing so many innocent people in the process of being afraid.

  • Liberals don't know government is force. Conservatives do, they just don't care.

  • liberals seem to "know" government is force -- seems to me that's pretty much the crux of ms. klein's whole biscuit, in fact -- they just dont think it's inevitable or acceptable.

  • Huh?

  • naomi klein seems to be saying that "government is force," at least the way the current regime governs. so how is it true that liberals don't know government is force? but i also think she's saying government is capable of more than that, whereas a lot of conservatives seem to think all governments CAN do is exercise force.

    clearer?

  • I guess you're right, they give us choices too.

Kinda like which are we wanna be punched with, or which gun we wanna be shot with. But yeah, they give us choices too. God bless them!

  • a little cynical, no?

  • A little.

  • not sure i blame you.

  • Her book is "The Shock Doctrine". OUTSTANDING. Please read it!

  • Hey Naomi Black water would never be needed if it wasn't for the very men in Balckwater losing their jobs due to defense cuts during the Clinton era.

  • half the world's military spending is on behalf of the united states even under clinton and we're still arguing about defense cuts?

  • It is where those cuts landed that is important. There simply was not enough time to train up new american soldiers in the amount needed, These guys only make their salary, no mention health insurance, retirement pensions, initial training costs, etc So it was the best option at the time. Only Naomi Kline would see a conspiracy in the fact that grunts would like some Taco Bell or a Big Mac from time to time and the Department of Defense is willing to give it too them.

  • Here's what your 34th President said: "...we must guard against the acquisition of unwarranted influence, whether sought or unsought, by the military-industrial complex. The potential for the disastrous rise of misplaced power exists and will persist..." (D.D.Eisenhower)

  • Business privatization is good if it's done through oversites,Estonia has shown this.

Why do some people assume nationlized resources is a good thing? Nigeria,Mexico and Iraq have nationalized oil and their industries and gov'ts are ripe with corruption. Iraqi oil nationalization didn't stop Saddam from looting Iraq's oil wealth.

  • if you read her books or columns you would see that naomi klein isn't against the concept of private property and free markets, she's making the point that politically connected industries funded by tax dollars in the way of contracts and using political support to ram through policies undemocratically IS NOT FREE MARKET CAPITALISM. this isn't rocket science, yet conservative apologists miss the point again and again and again and again..

  • What did she say?

I don't know for sure, but if we can get more destruction based capitalism, then maybe we can get more videos with her in them.

Did you say she was going to do them in a bikini?

No she didn't, but maybe we can take everything out of her suitcase going to one of these events and replace them with noting but bikinis?

    ;^)

  • Great. Maybe she can even explain how Ron Paul types support this agenda usually completely ignorant to them aiding much of what they would fight most if they truely understood privatization and its relation to Fascism.

  • She is a moron. She is calling things like social security a core function of government but she doesn't even mention that it was only created during the 20th century and that it was a result of the "shock" of the great depression which was made far worse than it should have been by the Government itself.

  • It's amazing how the state expects "The People" to send their children to war; hey, it's your duty to die for the state, but they aren't gonna take care of the old and sick; they're just a burden on society. IDIOT!

  • what about her mention of privatizing the army, prisons etc? You dupe.

  • What have you been sniffing? Private companies REFUSE to foot retirements, and stability IS the business of government.

Government FOR THE PEOPLE had a rare champion in FDR (FM Fundies STILL hate him), and HE'S the one that put in SS.

And the government (FDR) pulled the country OUT of the GD, which was precipitated by a LACK of financial controls. Putting them in place was the fix.

You got EVERYTHING wrong. Is misinformation your plan?

  • people voted for social security.. y'know.. democracy? chileans didn't get to vote for the economic policies of the "chicago boys" nor did new orleans residents get to vote on virtually replacing public schools with tax funded, for profit charter schools. klein isn't a socialist, her whole point is that using shock to ram through policiies undemocratically has nothing to do with either free markets or democracy. get a brain.

  • With all of this in mind she either uninformed (which is not likely) Or blantent trying to indoctrinate people. She accepts only the evidence that she conforms to her world view and rejecting all others.

  • ). Anders Hultin of Kunskapsskolan, a chain of 26 Swedish schools founded by a venture capitalist in 1999 and now running at a profit, says its schools only rarely have to invoke the first-come-first-served rule—the chain has responded to demand by expanding so fast that parents keen to send their children to its schools usually get a place. So the private sector, by increasing the total number of places available, can ease the mad scramble for the best schools in the state sector.

  • The economist Free to choose, and learn May 3rd 2007

The only real restrictions imposed on private schools were that they must run their admissions on a first-come-first-served basis and promise not to charge top-up fees (most American voucher schemes impose similar conditions).

  • The economist Free to choose, and learn May 3rd 2007

Sweeping education reforms in 1992 not only relaxed enrolment rules in the state sector, allowing students to attend schools outside their own municipality, but also let them take their state funding to private schools, including religious ones and those operating for profit.

  • The economist Free to choose, and learn May 3rd 2007

The strongest evidence against this criticism comes from Sweden, where parents are freer than those in almost any other country to spend as they wish the money the government allocates to educating their children.

  • She says that the Scandinavian model is best and that privatization is rejected by the people. But the Sweden the most socialist state is privatizing schools.

  • I wonder if she realizes the lessons of Hong Kong, a place where government involvement is trivial at best, and living standards are among the highest in Asia?

Secondly iraq isn't a free market because no central government exists to protect citizens from unlawful coercion ( a core function of government). It is anarchy, not a free market.

  • Precisely Klein's point, yes it is Anarchy. AN IMPORTANT FACT: It is ENGINEERED ANARCHY - for the purpose of a privatized force to move in and "save the day" while they are free to fleece both the Iraqi Oil resources and the American Tax payer. High living standards for an elite at best.

  • dkeesey: Yes, the Bush Cabal is criminal, they are facist collectivist monopoly capitalists. So are the owners of Rolling Stone. The Battle in Seattle was in the 90's (CLINTON) and over the WTO. Plus, SPP & CAFTA are follow-ups to Clinton's NAFTA - not that I play into the left-right BS! Collectivists like Bernie Sanders, CCPA, Ms. Klein, Bush, Clinton and the UN love double-talk. If she says "free market" is the problem then it is the ANSWER! Break the IMF - liberate the globe.

  • yes, the way I see it left and right are two tentacles attached to the same beast!

  • ..they have created an economy that has taken away the peace incentive...yes...they have...and all the little Congressional reps are part of this corruption.

  • Yes Naomi aside from oil Bush was itching to loot the vast public economic base that Saddam had built up. This womans options on nature of the relationships between Friedman and Pinochet is laughingly delusional.

  • You're a naive fool. Read Matt Taibi's last two articles in Rolling Stone and you'll see just how much the neo-cons have looted the USA.

  • Brilliant, although the self-pillaging aspect in the Iraq War though new in form is not all that new if you consider General Smedley Butler's classic "War is a Racket". I nontheless like the illustration of ressource pillaging(old colonialism) and state pillaging(colonialisim 2.1 or something).

  • Brilliant.

  • fantastic.

  • i loves her.

  • my hero!

  • Thanks for posting this madocnicely. :-)
