I talked to a guy who saw trons suit at some convention he said the suit looked like spandex with black tape on it and the disk looked like a dog chewed on it XD
So..wait,Kevin went to the grid, and created a copy of himself named Tron,so Kevin has mad skillz? But in the original he transports himself into the grid and everything was already there,so who IS Tron?I know he's like a watchdog for the MCP....
@legoguy000 Tron is not a watchdog for the MCP. He is the MCP's biggest enemy (Aside from Flynn.). Tron is a program created by Kevin Flynn's friend Alan Bradley. He was originally created as a security program, and was taken captive during MCP's take over of Encom's system. Since he would not bow down to the MCP, he was forced to fight in arena games.
@legoguy000 The Grid from Tron 1 is not the same as the Grid from Tron 2. The first Grid represented the inside of Encom's main network, while Grid 2 was Flynn's own creation separate from Encom where he wished to lead the programs to a sort of paradise of his own making (Sorta like a digital Moses.).
I dont know what my comment was because either I cant find it or its been deleted... but if I wrote something along the lines of "this is the gayest thing I've ever spent a minute and 17 seconds watching" I'd be spot on.
Alan: Well, it's called Tron. It's a security program itself, actually. It monitors all contacts between our system and other systems. It finds anything going on that's not scheduled, it shuts it down. I sent you a memo on it.
Dillinger: Part of the Master Control Program?
Alan: No, it'll run independantly, and watchdog the MCP as well.
you're actually right on this. the MCP only took over the functions of usefull programs. Tron was too strong for the MCP so he hoped by putting Tron in the games it would weaken him enough so the MCP could incorporate him.
@kracker212 My though exactly! Of course they look dated and frisbe-esk, it was in 1982 and that was the craze back then! The problem in Legacy stems from the way they used the camera placement/movement, I think. We never really get steady wide angle shots so the scale and movements of the disks are hard to percieve. As for the style, it could have been less glossy. But the most important thing that was missed is the way programs move and behave. It all just felt like a techno skin on real life.
@kracker212 The newer ones reminded me too much of Xena: Warrior Princess. Every time they threw one I kept imagining them doing a Xena battle scream before leaping into combat.
this movie probrably was a good movie in the 80's because other 80's movies did not use this kind of green screens and stuff.now in 2010 the tron LEGACY movie is better than this because now we have better kinds of technology. that is my opinion also on 0:02 the costume looks like paper on the helment

A few days ago me and my friend Philip went outside and got a frisbee. Guess what we did, Disc battle!!! One time I "missed" and philip said"hah! You missed!" But then it turned around and hit him in the leg!! Then I screamed "Ha, Did I?"
I hate how in Tron Legacy the programs just shatter into little pieces. AND they don't make any sound when they're derezzed, just little tinkling of glass!! >:C
Im 15, so dont think i old. My father always showed me oldies like BTTF, or the classic star wars before the uglier newer ones, so i have MUCH appreciation for the oldies. Now i knew about the tron game but i had never seen the movie, so when i saw the sequel i found it boring, then my ol pop showed me the original tron and i must agree. While the settings of the new one are more 'desirable and cooler' like everything in cgi, the action is more simple and yet way more awesome!
At 1.02. Accordingly on TRON 20th anniversary DVD, "The making of TRON" Bruce Boxleitner was under pressure from director Steven Lisberger to catch that frisbee, since he mess up the take serval times before it. When the other actors when on a lunch break, a professional frisbee thrower standing on a 10 foot ladder tossed the frisbee straight at Boxleitner, who caught it on the first take. Boxleitner is turning around, after the catch, towards Lisberger to see if he approved that take!
@High5Brah Tron is security program.the MCP was derezzed in 1982.Tron was instead reprogrammed by clu 2, the new system administrator in 1989 until 2010 when he was left drifting into the sea of simulation after overcoming his programming.
Two uploaded Tron videos removed by Disney. And I only just found them a week ago. Why can't they let films stay on youtube since all it does is get people excited for the new ones.
While the light cycles where a huge improvement in Legacy, I admit to liking the discs better in the old skool version. (Battling with the discs and the light traces they leave behind and NOT the appearance of the disc itself)
@slk1771 I aree. The new one wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be, but it was too derivative of other films. Star Wars, LOTR, even a bit of Nazi ideaology thrown in there.
@High5Brah Tron is NOT a "debugging" program. The entire Tron movie has been uploaded, in HD at that. Please watch it again and pay attention to Alan Bradley when he reports to Ed Dillinger's office about his Group 7 Access being cut-off. There he briefs his boss about that "project" (Tron) he's working on, and that he'd sent a memo about it (which Ed obviously hadn't taken the time to read).
Kevin briefly mentioned Tron's function (Protection) on why he brought Tron over to the New Grid.
@High5Brah Excuse me, where did I say they'd get "automatically" incorporated? And you're implying way too much Free Will on those avatars. They're Programs, not People. If the MCP wants them, he'll (masculine gender used loosely here) get them into himself one way or the other in the end. If any program doesn't go the way of the MCP, he'll die trying to be free (usually). Remember that only Tron could operate MCP-independent because Alan wrote him that way. All others? Not-so-free to run.
@High5Brah And pray tell what was going to happen to all those "robed" programs (similar to Dumont's gatekeeper) being walked into the MCP's inner sanctum before Kevin and Tron got into the scene to bust-up the party? It's implied that the MCP was intent on subjugating all programs to itself, whether by duress or by incorporation. Tron was a sticking point, but he wasn't the only winner in the place. There were still "elimination rounds" going-on until Kevin-the-anomaly happened to mix things up
@buggles999 The good blue guys were inside cycles that weren't blue. Bit of a change-of-plan in the Production Department back then. New film doesn't have that inconsistency. All guys' bikes and garment light patterns are of the same color.
TRON: LEGACY = Light cycles that don't move like light cycles, Discs that don't fly like discs, Recognizers that don't sound like Recognizers, and Characters that look like they were assaulted with neon glow sticks by New York fashion designers.
@wildezword The Light Cycles in Legacy moved just the same as in Tron away from the Game Grid. Obviously the new "Games" don't have to be on a "Grid" pattern anymore. When Flynn, et al, escaped from their grid their cycles banked and curved in turns like any cycle, as do the new ones. Discs' flight physics were just as flaky in the old system, and Recognizers don't have to sound like 8-bit audio renderings 200 [Grid] years later.
@RingSight91 I appreciate that you sincerely are rationalizing the movie. All I'm saying is the sequel, as a "visceral* presentation, has removed everything that made TRON what it is. Imagine the potential those disc battles, cycles & sound effects had using today's technology. The sequel doesn't meet the potential by a long shot. Disc battles in TRON should be iconic like light sabre duels in STAR WARS. Instead they're just a letdown. Nothing to argue over...just a squandered opportunity.
@wildezword I think you're putting too much stock in these Disc Battles by expecting them to be "iconic". Unlike combat with the preferred weapon of both Jedi & Sith, these disc engagements were a quaint carry-over from an old game system that was basically old Pong or Break-Out. If Jai-Alai weren't confined to certain betting arenas these days, the Grid would have those too, with just-as-quaint reasons for being. Strange none of the arena deathmatch games we know aren't reflected, e.g. QuakeIII
@RingSight91 but the disc battles were iconic for the original - this one and the final battle with Sark - and it was a disc that finally destroyed the MCP (as I am sure you know). The new film really doesn't seem to be comfortable as either a modern take on the original idea or something new - I didn't see one scene in the film that really blew me away compared to the sense of scale as the camera pans across the light cycle grid in the original.
@cressowski The Disc that Tron used to decompile the MCP had to get re-written with new code by Alan Bradley from the outside. Otherwise it would have been a formidable-yet-useless disc in the end. Alan thought that Kevin was just at another workstation running interference while he waited to log-in at his regular cubicle to input new code at the right time.
Legacy goes with the idea that Kevin did away with all that in his New Grid; "New" as in "for Users and Programs", not Clu's Death Arena.
@RingSight91 your detail is irrelevant, and is only argumentative. The discs, regardless of the specifics of how they were modified, were still iconic (you only need to look at the movie poster for the film).
If you want to read a much better visualisation of a worldwide network you should take a look at Feersum Endjinn by Iain Banks which is a "network warts an' all".
@cressowski You said the "Disc Battles" should be iconic, not the freaking Frisbees. Iconic Disc "Battles", a la Light Sabre Battles, are superflous and oxymoronic in a Grid Environment. Save for one entity, these aren't "people" (with unpredictable skill levels and knacks for improvisation) duking it out in Legacy. They're "programs", either one's code (and therefore skill) is better or it's not and that's how one wins, e.g. Alan's Tron was better built so he won in the arena always.
@RingSight91 i agree that in Legacy the discs were insignificant. and that's my point - everything that the first film was, the second was only superficially. you might claim the film tried to break new ground, personally i think it was just talentless writers stamping the usual story template (white guy saves native species and gets to date hot native girl) on yet another film.
@cressowski Wow, really letting loose on the nerd rage here, aren't we? "Talentless writers"? Considering Steven Lisberger was on-board this production, same as the first one, I wonder exactly how deficient those guys were. Either Lisberger didn't care how his characters would play out, or he intentionally let the crew do them that way, no?
@RingSight91 that was cheap and shows you have invested a lot in defending this film, so this is my last reply. If it was good writing they wouldn't have made the protagonist a base jumping, biker, expert hacker, multi-millionaire who thinks to open source his own products and does so by breaking into his own facility rather than just using his controlling share in the boardroom. oh and then they make his only friend a dog. boy, that's a realistic person, sounds just like people i meet every day
@cressowski when u hav shares u dont really hav a say in the wat the company does which is y he broke in to make the program free for every1 since having shares jus makes u hav the power to hire/fire board members which is y he was able to make alan head of the board since he had that kind of power also since sam was born n raised as a millionaires kid he alrdy had the money to buy the majority shares of the company n hav the time to practice all those stunts he did so ya its some wat realistic
@Lonehawk2k4 you have been taken in by the Hollywood image of the rebellious hacker / hero if you think any of that was realistic - loner hackers are pale and chubby and get vertigo when they step up onto the side walk. Also millionaires don't rebel as there is no reason to when you are already at the top of the pecking order.
@cressowski First you complained about not having "one scene in the film that really blew [you] away compared to the sense of scale as the camera pans across the light cycle grid in the original", then it turned into taking cracks at the writing. Which one is it? Angry at the Visual Arts crew or the Writers?
Dunno why you think there was so much awe-inspiring "scale" in Tron 1's Grid anyway. Mostly a 2-axis plane that drifted into darkness, oh + Mickey Mouse graphic as a Outlands Easter Egg?
@cressowski >"new film really doesn't seem to be comfortable as...a modern take on the original idea"
System Error: You missed the Meaning entirely.
Tron: MCP co-opts programs and plays them in the Game Grid. Survival of the fittest wherein the winners' code gets incorporated into the MCP so it can break-out of Encom's servers and go rampant worldwide.
Legacy: Not to post a spoiler, but it's the same idea. The Game Grid is to weed-out "weak" programs for Clu's "Private Initiative".
A Frisbee...a Goddamn Frisbee. What a piece of shit. If we have been able to make these sorts of improvements over the last couple of decades, just imagine how great movies will be 20 years from now.
@darnoc001 The Solar Sailer was Lora Baines' (later Lora Bradley, Alan's wife) baby. Her program Yori ran those Simulations. I imagine she'd be shocked to learn what CLU-2 had done to her handiwork. Transporting all those [spoiler] to the [spoiler]...
Watching these scene alone you can see everything that was TRON that is missing from the sequel.
1. Unique backlighting that fluctuated when emoting> Just lit
2. Discs that have a trail when thrown and can move on their own = or > Discs that serve as blades and carry your essence, that honestly can be favored either way.
3. Iconic derez sound > Shattering into shards that are liquid like. Sure it aids to unique scars but that sound made TRON for me.
@Deokishisu No I disagree the fact they always had helmets made them what they are. But in the deleted scenes the helmet was removed via a format in the love scene.
@realar I don't care for the things you listed in your comment and in fact prefer the newer movie's versions better. Some of the ideas here were changed and they looked nice to me, and others removed completely. I think it was probably a necessary change. You don't have to go around acting like you're so edgy because you liked the older movie better.
@realar Okay. Having never actually watched the old film I can't say much on it's behalf, but as a standalone movie, I'm impressed with Legacy. This movie wasn't a continuation of the old one (so not much of a sequel, really), and while it did borrow tons of ideas from the old one, I don't think it should be viewed as such. Take for example the Star Wars Saga. Some people think 45&6 are god given films. Others think they are awful. It really appeals to a different type of person.
@iAmCrosh Now we're talkin', yes you liked the new film because you didn't experience the first as much as I have, the original resonates strong in me and reaches me not only because of the neon look but the concept too and that each program has a soul instead of just being a copy of humanity, maybe that's why they went with the idea of the programs in Legacy. To show where Flynn went wrong and why he reset the grid at the end of the film.
Walking through the park, I always wonder to myself ' Why does a frisbee appear larger the closer it gets?' And then it hit me... AAAAAAA DE-RESOLUTION !!!
@luf4rall - Oh yes...it just didn't get a lot of popular appeal back then. It was WAY AHEAD of its time. Now...computer-animated movies are the norm. Back in 1982...this movie was so ahead of its time that a lot of film critics didn't know how to react to it. Nothing like this had ever came out before...even sci-fi hits like the Star Wars and Star Trek movies didn't have this kind of special effects in them.
@4getfulness16 Haha I know! Actually I like some of the effects from the original better. For instance, the sound effect when a guy gets "derezzed" is way cooler than whatever glass-shattering sound was in the new one.
those are just light up wham-o frisbees

Are tha blue guys bad guys or the orange and red guys?
buggles999 1 year ago
@buggles999 The good blue guys were inside cycles that weren't blue. Bit of a change-of-plan in the Production Department back then. New film doesn't have that inconsistency. All guys' bikes and garment light patterns are of the same color.

TRON: LEGACY = Light cycles that don't move like light cycles, Discs that don't fly like discs, Recognizers that don't sound like Recognizers, and Characters that look like they were assaulted with neon glow sticks by New York fashion designers.
wildezword 1 year ago
@wildezword The Light Cycles in Legacy moved just the same as in Tron away from the Game Grid. Obviously the new "Games" don't have to be on a "Grid" pattern anymore. When Flynn, et al, escaped from their grid their cycles banked and curved in turns like any cycle, as do the new ones. Discs' flight physics were just as flaky in the old system, and Recognizers don't have to sound like 8-bit audio renderings 200 [Grid] years later.
RingSight91 1 year ago
@RingSight91 I appreciate that you sincerely are rationalizing the movie. All I'm saying is the sequel, as a "visceral* presentation, has removed everything that made TRON what it is. Imagine the potential those disc battles, cycles & sound effects had using today's technology. The sequel doesn't meet the potential by a long shot. Disc battles in TRON should be iconic like light sabre duels in STAR WARS. Instead they're just a letdown. Nothing to argue over...just a squandered opportunity.
wildezword 1 year ago
@wildezword I think you're putting too much stock in these Disc Battles by expecting them to be "iconic". Unlike combat with the preferred weapon of both Jedi & Sith, these disc engagements were a quaint carry-over from an old game system that was basically old Pong or Break-Out. If Jai-Alai weren't confined to certain betting arenas these days, the Grid would have those too, with just-as-quaint reasons for being. Strange none of the arena deathmatch games we know aren't reflected, e.g. QuakeIII
RingSight91 1 year ago
@RingSight91 but the disc battles were iconic for the original - this one and the final battle with Sark - and it was a disc that finally destroyed the MCP (as I am sure you know). The new film really doesn't seem to be comfortable as either a modern take on the original idea or something new - I didn't see one scene in the film that really blew me away compared to the sense of scale as the camera pans across the light cycle grid in the original.
cressowski 1 year ago
@cressowski The Disc that Tron used to decompile the MCP had to get re-written with new code by Alan Bradley from the outside. Otherwise it would have been a formidable-yet-useless disc in the end. Alan thought that Kevin was just at another workstation running interference while he waited to log-in at his regular cubicle to input new code at the right time.
Legacy goes with the idea that Kevin did away with all that in his New Grid; "New" as in "for Users and Programs", not Clu's Death Arena.
RingSight91 1 year ago
@RingSight91 your detail is irrelevant, and is only argumentative. The discs, regardless of the specifics of how they were modified, were still iconic (you only need to look at the movie poster for the film).
If you want to read a much better visualisation of a worldwide network you should take a look at Feersum Endjinn by Iain Banks which is a "network warts an' all".
cressowski 1 year ago
@cressowski You said the "Disc Battles" should be iconic, not the freaking Frisbees. Iconic Disc "Battles", a la Light Sabre Battles, are superflous and oxymoronic in a Grid Environment. Save for one entity, these aren't "people" (with unpredictable skill levels and knacks for improvisation) duking it out in Legacy. They're "programs", either one's code (and therefore skill) is better or it's not and that's how one wins, e.g. Alan's Tron was better built so he won in the arena always.
RingSight91 1 year ago
@RingSight91 i agree that in Legacy the discs were insignificant. and that's my point - everything that the first film was, the second was only superficially. you might claim the film tried to break new ground, personally i think it was just talentless writers stamping the usual story template (white guy saves native species and gets to date hot native girl) on yet another film.
cressowski 1 year ago
@cressowski Wow, really letting loose on the nerd rage here, aren't we? "Talentless writers"? Considering Steven Lisberger was on-board this production, same as the first one, I wonder exactly how deficient those guys were. Either Lisberger didn't care how his characters would play out, or he intentionally let the crew do them that way, no?
RingSight91 1 year ago
@RingSight91 that was cheap and shows you have invested a lot in defending this film, so this is my last reply. If it was good writing they wouldn't have made the protagonist a base jumping, biker, expert hacker, multi-millionaire who thinks to open source his own products and does so by breaking into his own facility rather than just using his controlling share in the boardroom. oh and then they make his only friend a dog. boy, that's a realistic person, sounds just like people i meet every day
cressowski 1 year ago
@cressowski when u hav shares u dont really hav a say in the wat the company does which is y he broke in to make the program free for every1 since having shares jus makes u hav the power to hire/fire board members which is y he was able to make alan head of the board since he had that kind of power also since sam was born n raised as a millionaires kid he alrdy had the money to buy the majority shares of the company n hav the time to practice all those stunts he did so ya its some wat realistic
Lonehawk2k4 1 year ago

RingSight91 1 year ago
@cressowski >"new film really doesn't seem to be comfortable as...a modern take on the original idea"
System Error: You missed the Meaning entirely.
Tron: MCP co-opts programs and plays them in the Game Grid. Survival of the fittest wherein the winners' code gets incorporated into the MCP so it can break-out of Encom's servers and go rampant worldwide.
Legacy: Not to post a spoiler, but it's the same idea. The Game Grid is to weed-out "weak" programs for Clu's "Private Initiative".

4. TRON helmets > The helmets in Legacy

@Deokishisu No I disagree the fact they always had helmets made them what they are. But in the deleted scenes the helmet was removed via a format in the love scene.
realar 1 year ago
@realar I don't care for the things you listed in your comment and in fact prefer the newer movie's versions better. Some of the ideas here were changed and they looked nice to me, and others removed completely. I think it was probably a necessary change. You don't have to go around acting like you're so edgy because you liked the older movie better.

@iAmCrosh Edgy? I'm furious!
The critics could tell you other reasons why Legacy wasn't a real followup.
It's just a huge music video for Daft Punk.
realar 1 year ago
@realar Okay. Having never actually watched the old film I can't say much on it's behalf, but as a standalone movie, I'm impressed with Legacy. This movie wasn't a continuation of the old one (so not much of a sequel, really), and while it did borrow tons of ideas from the old one, I don't think it should be viewed as such. Take for example the Star Wars Saga. Some people think 45&6 are god given films. Others think they are awful. It really appeals to a different type of person.
iAmCrosh 1 year ago
@iAmCrosh Now we're talkin', yes you liked the new film because you didn't experience the first as much as I have, the original resonates strong in me and reaches me not only because of the neon look but the concept too and that each program has a soul instead of just being a copy of humanity, maybe that's why they went with the idea of the programs in Legacy. To show where Flynn went wrong and why he reset the grid at the end of the film.

luf4rall 1 year ago
@luf4rall - Oh yes...it just didn't get a lot of popular appeal back then. It was WAY AHEAD of its time. Now...computer-animated movies are the norm. Back in 1982...this movie was so ahead of its time that a lot of film critics didn't know how to react to it. Nothing like this had ever came out before...even sci-fi hits like the Star Wars and Star Trek movies didn't have this kind of special effects in them.
