carnatic music is the mother of all music. It is derived from the immortal vedas - the samaveda. There is a branch of samaveda called gandharva veda that deals with this. The vedic hymns of samaveda in recitation gave birth to carnatic music. It is only from its origninal beginings that the offshoot of hindustani music has evolved. The western classical music are a an evolution only in the last 1000 yrs or so, when the innate talent for notes had gone to Europe from India via Middle East
Superb, by a master.Music is Universal.I love Western Classical music too.Always compare apples to apples and not to oranges.Western hip hop is not to be compared with Carnatic,..and so on.
Basically all music is based on the 7 notes of music and the Sa in Carnatic/Hindustani and A in Western classical is 440 Hz frequency. I personally enjoy Western/Carnatic/Hindustani/Afro-Carrib but treat them differently for the purposes of proper appreciation. I am a trained Carnatic Vocalist. It is so sad to see riveting viewpoints when it comes to music. Reaching out and attempting to appreciate the music of another culture is truly what music is about. James Bowman is phenomenal!
This is wonderful - superb alapana of the raga (exposition of the raga).
For those new to it, this is carnatic music from a master. It takes years to become this good. A few westerners have studied long and hard and can tell you the richness, difficulty and beauty of this enduring art form.

I'm trying to grasp the concept of this... is there some kind of enjoyment in listening to this, anything artistic or musical? Sounds do not equal music. Just my thought. I don't care what people say about traditions, should we go beat up black people because it's the tradition? No, because we have evolved; I think some people should rethink their music formula the same way
LOL...you really can't follow the music? strum the violin part on the guitar. Hum. Listen to the scale. When you figure out the concept of melisma, come back.
The reason you're having trouble with this it's not because it's old, but because the kind of music you like doesn't value this sort of effortless use of the voice. Watch how smoothly Dr. Balamuralikrishna sings, how the song flows easily and there is no struggle in the words. Compare this to the music you enjoy, where the struggle is actually a part of the song, cracking, straining and hurting your throat. This difference has nothing to do with old or new, but rather the skill of the singer.
@blakewind: Of course it's effortless, he stays in the same limited voice range. But whatever, I mean alright, you like it, nice, everybody's happy now. I think it's shit, you think it's great.
dont you feel ashamed to reply to the comments like the above one? better ignore those ignorant fools. Most of the western songs (i am not saying all) are a pain for our ears and pain for the throats of the singers, where as this one is honey
Haha, I'm a westerner myself, friend. I learned of the beauty of the carnatic tradition only a few years ago, and since I was raised in a household full of western classical music and jazz, it was only a short while before I began to appreciate the essence of the music. Great skill can be recognized by intelligent people of any culture.
I knew it (loooking at your profile) before i posting the comment.
It is not that western music is very bad, but most of the songs i have heard is sung with so difficult, but yet not sweet for the ears of the listeners. most of them sound like just noise to my ears (may be i am ignorant of western music, but still).
search for Henry Purcell on youtube...I used Emma Kirkby's performance of Sweeter Than Roses and James Bowman singing O Solitude as examples for some Indians.
@knpradeep77 It is possible for mebers of any culture to love any other culture, but not for every single member. You not even can force yourself to open your mind and heart. I am convinced that you would become richer in soul if you would find a way in to the music of bach or bill evans just for instance.
Its bit hard to teach some one to appreciate any classical art form....Once you start understanding the beauty, you will not leave it...so to answer your question, you start listening carnatic music say for couple of solid years, then come back and read your comment...
I tried again. Still I am getting we're Sorry, This veideo no longer available. Not sure why i am getting. I am eagerly waiting to see this video. Could you please help me.
we are lucky enough to hear and watch exponents like Dr. BMK perform - some of the few left who render us the aboriginal essence of this classic music form.
.......as the river flows you gently carried by it. Just let it flow any way - this way and now that way.

@blakewind: I understand the concept, and by all means I could (do it on guitar). Anyhow, that's really beside the point
