  • Thanks so much for taking the time to make this! Would you consider it a must to purchase NYS's Canal Guide? And were you ever at a place on the trail where you felt you were unsafe?

Sorry it took me so long to get back to you and sorry to say that I don't think the NYS Canal Guide for biking is still available anywhere. It was useful but also had it's useless moments - like getting me lost just outside of Syracuse. Decent maps of each city and large town are a big help as is a GPS. I had all that and still managed to create a few detours. The canal biking guide is not necessary but if you can find one of the guides it is worth having.

And your second question. I did get early starts each day and was at my destinations before dusk each day. My recommendation is don't be alone on most of the trail much after dinner time. Seems that is when trouble makers are about. But the one part that would have scared most other people was when I got to Albany. Getting dark - flat tire - lost part of my air pump - bent rim. I was not on the best side of Albany where I had to fix that. But still everyone there was nice!
