@JulezAwesome Right! Using polypropylene (essentially 'gift wrap' or clear cellophane in a way) will help catch the light. This is used in most custom sabers made by individual sabersmiths...
@greytale well see thats the problem i dont have anything to make videos with if i did i would have videos on here already and sorry i forgot to mention i dont like using money over the internet because of hackers not only that but i have no money even if i wanted to use it on the internet
Thanks for your vids! I made my first saber and its awsome. I was fortunate to get a toy lightsaber at a garage sale for $1 and took out the sound card. now i just need to get a good speaker. headding over to custom saber shop now. Anyways just wanted to say thanks!!!
@taggjon You're welcome--it's always nice to hear some thanks!
And... exactly--you can add sound by "cannibalizing" simple & inexpensive saber toys... especially because using a 3.6v setup is usually never enough voltage to damage one of the el-cheapo boards. :)
Good job, and looking forward to seeing the video...
@ScenicZipaloot1 Hey, that's a good question for new folks... no, actually it doesn't, contrary to how that might feel counter-intuitive.
This comes mostly because the general thing about circuitry is... it's a circle! :) Current is flowing in a loop, so it will "get" the resistance wherever it is.
In general though... most people place the resistor on the + lead, and in this case with the "basic" saber, I place it right before the LED, but after the switch.
can i use the rebel star for my saber that has a 18650 3.6v battery or will luxeon 3 work better? the rebel star is the brightest type and it is 3.4v light.
@ScenicZipaloot1 Yes, you can, but you will need a resistor to offset the excess voltage that the 18650 Li-Ion 3.7v cell would generate.
The reason I made this video is to show that more "matching" LED & battery sources can work together without a resistor. Not that a resistor is a big deal or anything... :)
@shriuken154 it's not a dumb question, although it gets asked over & over & over... :)
The answer is: quite a bloody darn lot. As far as I'm concerned, having experience with these things for 5+ years & also having built something like 35+ sabers... unless you ~MEAN~ to destroy the sabers by senselessly beating on metal poles until failure... they will handle THRONGS of dueling, punishment & general beatings... :)
How do I know? Just watch my "Balance of Power" shows. 'Nuff said.
@greytale oh haha sorry about repeating the question ^^" I looked for the answer but couldn't find it. . . then again I didn't look very hard! Well thanks again for your swift reply; I might look into making one myself :) Thanks again!
@ScenicZipaloot1 Many types of solutions can be used as a recharging system, as long as they have two lines--one for positive (+) and one for negative (-).
In this particular case, since the saber is so simplistic, I used a basic "stereo/mono jack", which is normally used in (for example) a set of large headphones. As long as you wire it consistently with your set of chargers, it does not really matter what pin becomes + or -.
To learn more, visit places like FX-Sabers or TheCustomSaberShop.
wish i knew how to do this. building the prop itself probably wouldnt be too big a deal to figure out how to get together but the wiring i wouldnt have a clue where to start or even how to do
How would i make one of these and if i could have a material list that would be amazing. ik i sound kind of noob-ish to this sort of thing but im a quick learner, and i think what your doing with just simply sink tubes is amazing haha. and how would u go about changing the colour or making a double sided one.
That's it, Novastar! Don't let the twits get you down! Your vids here have inspired me to build my own sink tube saber (with the addition of a cheapo Anakin soundboard) that I can duel with my brother with. The looks on the neighbors faces should be priceless when he and I start going hell bent for leather in the front yard with some dueling action...Thanks again for the fun and informative videos, cya on the TCSS forums!
@karlos258 hahahah you're so right, karlos... and sadly for rancidpunk... 1) I do not live in my basement, I have my own place... 2) I have a wife who looks like Charlize Theron... 3) I inspire and teach children because of these sabers... 4) I delete hateful/spiteful/non-sequitur comments, so...

@greytale I would also like to say that I really appreciate what you've done. When I was seven I used to run around my backyard with a rolled up bristol board taped up, making clashing noises as I attacked trees. And now, twenty years later, seeing how far the art of lightsaber making has gone, really makes me want to start making them again. Bravo my friend.
@vladimir0B that actor is the guy who plays "Monk"... I forgot his name, but... he's actually a fantastic actor. I recently saw a movie of him with Denzel (netflixxed it, heheh). Good stuff.
@nonnii13 ...I personally do not have the capacity/time to do such a thing... but there are many vendors (whom I do "shout outs" to) in many of my videos who DO sell custom, one-of-a-kind sabers. :)
@kocoluchea ...not in any simple fashion. Instead, converting the FX-saber from an "LED array" (string of LEDs in a tube) to a single high-powered LED (such as a Luxeon LED) would be much more beneficial in a number of ways--including the brightness increase.
Additionally, you'd gain the ability to remove/replace the "blade" tube... and increase the durability tenfold as well.
@burner5679 ... mmm, not "common" stores, but you can often get poly-c tubing at plastics shops.
I highly recommend thecustomsabershop though... since it's MEANT for all things LED saber. :) You can see that I point folks there in tons of my vids...
@SweeetvidzMan ...since when are YOU my judge? Hmm? My OWN counsel will I take on what I am "too old" for!
Now YOU are old enough to know the difference between making a pointless & "waste my time" comment on a subject of which you have no interest... and just shutting the hell up, moving on, and holding some respect for things of which you have no understanding.

thats cool the light and stuff but how do you make the sound i know you need the resister but what else do you need like a sound card and if you do were do you get it
@nene555, that's a really good question, I forgot to sort of "cover how it works" in most any of my videos.
In general, batteries have a "mAh" rating (Milli-amperes per hour). So, it's a rating of energy draw over TIME. Not to be confused with purely "mA" (current).
The 18650 cells I use generally range from 2200 to 2600mAh, so here's how to calculate...
If you draw (on avg.) ~1A (1000mA) from the cell, it should last ~2.2 or ~2.6 hrs (2200 or 2600mAh).
@Solojr... mmm, the port I used in this video is just a simple "stereo jack". You can use most any recharge port you like as long as it has a + and - setup... but TCSS sells a Canon 2.1mm port that is very good--especially for upgrades later on.
my son wants me to build this for him,, where do i get all of these parts,,, i have the sink tube, electric tape, gasket, can prolly find the battery, but what about the rest of this,,, who is tim and can i order the rest from him,,,,, thank you
@Digitron -- I would avoid using a standard 9v battery, as it will not provide the current & runtime that you'd need.
I'm also not 100% sure what you mean by "Luxeon III LED V", as there *are* such things as the Luxeon V--a totally different LED. If you mean you have a Luxeon III... with a forward voltage of ~3.8v... a single Li-Ion cell of ~3.7v will be perfect. As shown in this video.
heheh... nice saber fight, btw. You certainly can see a difference when you plan & choreograph ahead of time.
Check out my "Balance of Power" live performances to see what goes into doing saber battles with zero cut-shots, zero "take twos", using LED props that light up! :) You might enjoy them...
Reflective material can be adhered to the inside of the rounded tip that "caps" the top of the blade.
This allows for some of the light that is being output on the opposite end (in the blade holder) from the LED to reflect a bit BACK down the tube, and "even out" some brightness loss up near the last 8" of the blade.
It's hard to explain, but... if you're planning to make your own, you should do some more research on TCSS or FX-Sabers.
No, the polycarbonate used for "light sabers" is not solid--it would not light up correctly. Both blades are hollow, both need a diffusion method... and in the case of the Luxeon-driven saber... a "mirrored tip" is a good idea as well.
thanks! I've learned a lot from your vids! I just bought a Force FX Construction kit which I enventually plan on converting to RGB Luxeon and upgrading the blade. Seemed like the best bang for the buck as far as starter Saber.. :)
Thanks! I have a background in electronics engineers so hopefully I will be able to contribute something! I haven't laid my hands on a saber yet but I've already got some ideas.. Like using Photo resistors or optocouplers connected to the REF and CTL of a buckpuck to hopefully allow the cheap sound board to control the brightness of a luxeon... Someone may have already done this. :-? optocoupling seems like the safest sollution to isolate the sound board and unlike a relay its variable.
You might want to PM more regarding this kind of more complex stuff (for discussion), but... you've got the wrong Jones... you should try speaking with Erv! :)
My knowledge of electronics is actually quite limited... despite what some people believe due to my videos. :)
Well... paintball is kinda nerdy too--a bunch of fools playing around with fake weapons, hahah... ;)
Creating a saber takes some time, patience, the right tools/parts, soldering skills... and a basic understanding of electronic circuitry + how a high-current LED (diode) works.
Hi popeye. Actually, you are forgetting the voltage drop that a cell has while under load. Also... in order to get the "full" 1A or so from an LED with a fwd voltage of ~3.8v... you actually need ~4v.
Additionally, the LED has been lasting for several years without fail. I don't even need the LED to last more than 5. By then--new technology would be a good replacement anyhow.
Even so--it's highly unlikely that the LED will fail under THE SHOWN circumstances.
LOL, these are not "fake". It's just science and technology. A high-powered LED (in this case, a "Luxeon III" by Lumileds), a focal lens to narrow the wide 120 degree angle to 5 or 10 degrees, a Li-Ion battery cell (~3.7v), and a switch.
Your brother is correct in thinking that these are "real". Unless you're both talking about something that can cut through things like one in the movies. In that case, you're both bonkers. :)
Hey Greytale would it be cheaper to buy a blade from TCSS for $33 or make one from the blade supplies and if cheaper can you tell me what i need to buy?
I don't have any special access to anything, heheh... the tools you need are readily available in common stores, with the exception of things such as specialty sound boards.
Anyone with soldering/wiring skills & tools + sink tubes + a few electronic parts could get this kind of thing done. :)
i used a sink tubee and all the same stuff plus the store bought electronics, just a suggestion, mount the electronics for those makin these cuz otherwise they could get damged!!
Hi stop... thanks, glad you like... :) This part is available at thecustomsabershop, and it's basically a blade holder/LED mount and heatsink all in one. Great part. Probably called '1.25" blade holder' on the site.
These are the very BASIC sabers... if you want "incredible"... start looking at the Crystal Focus sabers--most especially the "LED Saber Video Response Challenges" concerning OTHER people's CF sabers.
Many have made some really, really stellar and astounding props using CF. Good stuff.
what type of luxeon led would be best for a saber similar to this one? i have a 4V li-ion cell, a washer for the emitter, and an 8" sink tube. I am also looking for a heatsink and a blade holder.
Most any LED with a forward voltage of ~3.6v to 3.8v should be good... although I've never heard of a "4v" Li-Ion cell. Unless that is rating the cell's top, "full charge" voltage, which would be correct (around 4v to 4.2v).
hey i was wondering.....ive never seen you make a double bladed lightsaber....why havent you done this? i think it would be pretty cool if you made an instructional video on this
Two were demonstrated in the "Balance of Power" performances that I produced, directed, wrote, choreographed, acted in, and did the vocals and sound for...
...but I suppose a lot of the folks interested in making sabers are NOT interested in watching live performances WITH sabers since I get this question like once a week, heheheh! :)
I'm looking to get a fully machined custom hilt, but Tim said he's laying off of full customs until "further notice." So would you happen to know who else might machine a hilt of my own design for me?
dude the only teal lightsaber (in star wars games books ect) is powered by a one of a kind saber crystal called "Mantle of the Force" and oly one orange saber crystal is known as well "Heart of the Guardian"
Glad you noticed it... this music is from an old PC game called "The Dig". It was a fairly famous Lucasarts game written by Spielburg and Lucas (I believe). The main character was voiced by Robert Patrick, most famous as the T-1000 of Terminator 2, and... newer eps of the X-Files! :) I love Robert Patrick's voice... it's got such a killer quality to it!
They "catch" and disperse the light, not unlike what you would find in most lightbulbs: most bulbs have a milky white appearance and are not always 100 "clear". This allows the color of the light to show.
If you use an "empty tube"--you won't "see" the light until it shines onto something (much like a flashlight).
dam u got alot of sabers i got a set of blue pink/purpleish and a green and red plasticswords there are about 5 tubes so u can put it down and put it on ill make a vid with em later, if i can figure out how .. hehe
good video u look cool and are good with sabering nice one ;P
Hey Novastar. I've been planning on making a "sink drain" saber for a while. But I was wondering how I would hold a blade in one. I noticed that you mentioned someone named Tim has those emitters for just that. But who is Tim and where can I get his emitters?
I just got a fx lightsaber construction kit, and it got messed up, i need help finding a good lightsaber WITH SOUND!! and u seem like u would have some, send me a message!
That is actually a good question & the answer is yes & no.
Yes because you can use most any LED you like... but *NO* if you're going to go without a resistor.
Why. The fwd voltage of (let's say) a Luxeon III red/red-O/Amber... is 2.95v. Sure, you could push it to 3.2v or 3.4v and probably be ok... but the single Li-Ion starts with about 4.2v.
SO... if you do decide to do a Red LED...
1. Check the fwd v.
2. For Lux III Reds... use 2AA direct or the Li-Ion with a resistor.
hey dude, just put some cellop. into the stock mr blades ;) it will be much more bright and even, i just do it with all my mr blades!

PoeticCody 1 year ago
@PoeticCody The blades are made of polycarbonate, and require some proper diffusion material to get the most out of the lighting solution.
In my case, I use polypropylene ("clear gift wrap"!) as the diffusion material. It's pretty well-known in the saber after-market to do such a thing.
Remember: these sabers are entirely different from the widely known "Force FX" props in the mainstream market.

Check out my "Balance of Power" live performances to see what goes into doing saber battles with zero cut-shots, zero "take twos", using LED props that light up! :) You might enjoy them...

waht is the mirrior tip
Pmcg0 2 years ago
Reflective material can be adhered to the inside of the rounded tip that "caps" the top of the blade.
This allows for some of the light that is being output on the opposite end (in the blade holder) from the LED to reflect a bit BACK down the tube, and "even out" some brightness loss up near the last 8" of the blade.
It's hard to explain, but... if you're planning to make your own, you should do some more research on TCSS or FX-Sabers.

these blades good for dueling
Pmcg0 2 years ago
so this is a hollow Force FX blade in the video but the Ultra Saber are solid polycarbonate rods, correct?
brandon9271 2 years ago
No, the polycarbonate used for "light sabers" is not solid--it would not light up correctly. Both blades are hollow, both need a diffusion method... and in the case of the Luxeon-driven saber... a "mirrored tip" is a good idea as well.
greytale 2 years ago
thanks! I've learned a lot from your vids! I just bought a Force FX Construction kit which I enventually plan on converting to RGB Luxeon and upgrading the blade. Seemed like the best bang for the buck as far as starter Saber.. :)
brandon9271 2 years ago
Glad to help out in any way, big or small, Brandon.
As others have helped me to learn and do what I have... I'm just doing the same! Pay it forward and help out others where you can as well...
greytale 2 years ago
:-? optocoupling seems like the safest sollution to isolate the sound board and unlike a relay its variable.
brandon9271 2 years ago
You might want to PM more regarding this kind of more complex stuff (for discussion), but... you've got the wrong Jones... you should try speaking with Erv! :)
My knowledge of electronics is actually quite limited... despite what some people believe due to my videos. :)
greytale 2 years ago
what's the cheapest way to get sound FX? Do any of those crappy telescopic sabers have decent FX? maybe put the guts in a sink tube?
brandon9271 2 years ago
Sure, you could use those.

Vmanfresh 2 years ago
lol nerdy no offense!
but i wanna make 1 so bad!
but i dont understand half the things your saying
Vmanfresh 2 years ago
Well... paintball is kinda nerdy too--a bunch of fools playing around with fake weapons, hahah... ;)
Creating a saber takes some time, patience, the right tools/parts, soldering skills... and a basic understanding of electronic circuitry + how a high-current LED (diode) works.
greytale 2 years ago
i guess im just dumb lol
Vmanfresh 2 years ago
Not at all.
I am simply saying... if you'd like to do any of the above--if you take it one step at a time... you'll be able to do this with no problem.
However... if you try to "get it all at once"... it will seem impossible.
Same for most anything in the world--skill or trade or trick or project: it takes TIME and doesn't happen in an hour or a week. ;)
greytale 2 years ago
U should put a 1ohm 1W resistor in series with the LED to limit the current.
A full charged 18650 have approx 4.2V and a discharge current of min 2C (in our case ~ 5amp).
Without resistor the led life will be very short.
popeyescu 2 years ago
Even so--it's highly unlikely that the LED will fail under THE SHOWN circumstances.
greytale 2 years ago
sick :O were u buy it D:?
RavFLYFFblaSonic2pl 2 years ago
fake i dunno y mt brother thinks their rea
tazmanians55 2 years ago
LOL, these are not "fake". It's just science and technology. A high-powered LED (in this case, a "Luxeon III" by Lumileds), a focal lens to narrow the wide 120 degree angle to 5 or 10 degrees, a Li-Ion battery cell (~3.7v), and a switch.
Your brother is correct in thinking that these are "real". Unless you're both talking about something that can cut through things like one in the movies. In that case, you're both bonkers. :)

ssj3vegeta37 2 years ago 2
Hey Greytale would it be cheaper to buy a blade from TCSS for $33 or make one from the blade supplies and if cheaper can you tell me what i need to buy?
Thanks

umhh what dos (rinkydink) mean
megapie12345 2 years ago
I suppose the best way to put it would be--nothing special, not fancy, plain, ordinary, average... of simple construction.
greytale 2 years ago
cool.....i never knew making a light saber was that easy.......thanks man.....
one question how hard can you hit with it...??
Bregadeir 2 years ago
Extremely hard. Almost to the point of wanting to break the "blade".
If you use a thick-walled polycarbonate tube... it will be even more difficult to crack or destroy it.
greytale 2 years ago
can you get the stuff at home depot?

does tim have a vid so i can buy the stuff or is there a nother place i can buy the stuff?

Visit thecustomsabershop...
Youtube doesn't allow links in comments (or description sections), so... you'll have to figure the rest out. :)

awesome sabers man...
you are really lucky to have such a sweet collection of sabers and access to a whole bunch of specific types equipment to build them
awesomeLEE4 2 years ago
I don't have any special access to anything, heheh... the tools you need are readily available in common stores, with the exception of things such as specialty sound boards.
Anyone with soldering/wiring skills & tools + sink tubes + a few electronic parts could get this kind of thing done. :)
greytale 2 years ago
those cost like 80 bucks =(
chiter200 2 years ago
More like $50 or so if you use the more "standard" Alkaline batteries. And maybe 20 more cents for a resistor.
greytale 2 years ago
where can I get it for $50? I'm in oregon, usa, and aren't the construction set blades really durable for dueling?

Hi stop... thanks, glad you like... :) This part is available at thecustomsabershop, and it's basically a blade holder/LED mount and heatsink all in one. Great part. Probably called '1.25" blade holder' on the site.
greytale 3 years ago
dude these are incredible
Crdtard 3 years ago 2
These are the very BASIC sabers... if you want "incredible"... start looking at the Crystal Focus sabers--most especially the "LED Saber Video Response Challenges" concerning OTHER people's CF sabers.
Many have made some really, really stellar and astounding props using CF. Good stuff.

were can i get the blade
logitech5674 3 years ago
also, i have a switch, a 1" polycarbonate blade, and a recharge port.
machiznima 3 years ago
what type of luxeon led would be best for a saber similar to this one? i have a 4V li-ion cell, a washer for the emitter, and an 8" sink tube. I am also looking for a heatsink and a blade holder.
machiznima 3 years ago
Most any LED with a forward voltage of ~3.6v to 3.8v should be good... although I've never heard of a "4v" Li-Ion cell. Unless that is rating the cell's top, "full charge" voltage, which would be correct (around 4v to 4.2v).
greytale 3 years ago
Sorry. Yeah, that's what I meant, it's the maximum voltage. Thanks a lot.

hey i was wondering.....ive never seen you make a double bladed lightsaber....why havent you done this? i think it would be pretty cool if you made an instructional video on this
silverelite66 3 years ago
Two were demonstrated in the "Balance of Power" performances that I produced, directed, wrote, choreographed, acted in, and did the vocals and sound for...
...but I suppose a lot of the folks interested in making sabers are NOT interested in watching live performances WITH sabers since I get this question like once a week, heheheh! :)
Go check out my Balance of Power performances...

Hey there!
I'm looking to get a fully machined custom hilt, but Tim said he's laying off of full customs until "further notice." So would you happen to know who else might machine a hilt of my own design for me?

livelifesledge 3 years ago
Glad you noticed it... this music is from an old PC game called "The Dig". It was a fairly famous Lucasarts game written by Spielburg and Lucas (I believe). The main character was voiced by Robert Patrick, most famous as the T-1000 of Terminator 2, and... newer eps of the X-Files! :) I love Robert Patrick's voice... it's got such a killer quality to it!
greytale 3 years ago
wat r diffusers?
aznkriss133 3 years ago
They "catch" and disperse the light, not unlike what you would find in most lightbulbs: most bulbs have a milky white appearance and are not always 100 "clear". This allows the color of the light to show.
If you use an "empty tube"--you won't "see" the light until it shines onto something (much like a flashlight).

dam u got alot of sabers i got a set of blue pink/purpleish and a green and red plasticswords there are about 5 tubes so u can put it down and put it on ill make a vid with em later, if i can figure out how .. hehe

Hey Novastar. I've been planning on making a "sink drain" saber for a while. But I was wondering how I would hold a blade in one. I noticed that you mentioned someone named Tim has those emitters for just that. But who is Tim and where can I get his emitters?
Jimboman2187 3 years ago
You can get the correct parts to make this kind of saber at thecustomsabershop. You know what to add at the end, heheh
Additionally, you'll find even MORE interesting parts there at Tim's site... but the basics can be done as I'm mentioning here. Up to you.

I just got a fx lightsaber construction kit, and it got messed up, i need help finding a good lightsaber WITH SOUND!! and u seem like u would have some, send me a message!
JEDI24B 3 years ago
hey nova i was wondering if i could do this saber except with a red led?
demonic9aim 3 years ago
That is actually a good question & the answer is yes & no.
Yes because you can use most any LED you like... but *NO* if you're going to go without a resistor.
Why. The fwd voltage of (let's say) a Luxeon III red/red-O/Amber... is 2.95v. Sure, you could push it to 3.2v or 3.4v and probably be ok... but the single Li-Ion starts with about 4.2v.
SO... if you do decide to do a Red LED...
1. Check the fwd v.
2. For Lux III Reds... use 2AA direct or the Li-Ion with a resistor.
3. Be careful!
