  • NICE! I'm favoriting this.

  • Is it necessary to run 844 first, followed by Challenger? or could it be run just as well the other way around?

  • whos pulling who??? looks like 844 is doing most of the work

  • Awesome vid bro. 5*****

  • ive noticed that if they double head two engines that don't have the same whell arrangement, the smaller one goes first.

  • fuel consumption ...

    gals per minute...

    any ideas...?

  • Bit of an overkill but still an absolutly awesome sight!

  • How do you stop a double header at the same time don't they have to talk to each other?

  • in the early days they communicated with the whistles, but today they use walkey talkeys

  • Does ny one know if they have plans of doing this again? Or if they will be running the 3985 this year or anytime soon? I know the 844 just got done with a trip, i caught it coming through.

  • Hopefully, but it appears as 2009 wont be the year for it, mabey next

  • very good. note 1.000. The best,

you see my videos (movies) for trains?

    quero ver

  • i think the UP 844 has the best whistle in the world

  • That & N&W 611's whistle as well.

  • Then add that to the list too lol.

  • I was born in Watertown, NY in 1946. Has NYCentral tracks near me. I only remember the Desiel engines growing up. One summer in the fifties we drove south to Richmond, Va to visit my dad's sister. That took us through eastern Pennsylvania and that is the only time I ever got up close and personal with steam. We'd stop along the highways, which always follow rivers and parallel tracks in Pa. I was about 10. Never forgot it and now at 62, I'm building an HO table for my 9 year old grandson.

  • I sure wish I could have seen this in person. :)

Now if we could only have a doubleheader with SP 4449 and SP 4460.....but I doubt that we'll ever seen 4460 moving again.

  • Solid vid. I really liked the view from the bridge along the length of the train. Thanks 4 posting!

  • no diesel engine on the train?

  • epic...

  • How is this RARE? they've doubleheaded before 3 time to Sacramento Railfair '81, '91, & '99

  • ok, 3 times in only 26 years ... sorry,if your bothered... just chill out friend.

  • Skip, I've watched your Challenger & 844 videos over and over. They are all fantastic.

I love long vids you've added of October, 2008.

A few questions--what is purpose of farings on 844? 2) there are propane tanks between the roadway and the track, out in the middle of nowhere, from time to time, no buildings around.?? What is top speed of each of these locomotives? How much oil do they burn per hour flat out? Have you managed to trade videos for cab ride with the engineer?

    Thank you.

  • If by "farings" you mean the big black sheets on the fron, I have an answer: Those are smoke deflectors designed to create and air vacuum to lift smoke up and away from the cab and cars.

  • @trainboy94 I really take back what I said here, I was really inexperienced when I wrote this

  • @trainboy94 dude that pretty rare that means once every 12 years so this is considered rare do to the fact that even though the engine may run every year you rarely see them double heading

  • good job Skip!

  • how many cars behind em?

  • They Look like twins haha

  • Wow, they must have needed some serious horsepower

  • American passenger cars are not small but they are dwarfed by the two leviathans providing the horse power. Impressive.

  • Man, what an impressive sight! Now if UP would get the BIG BOY out of retirement! There are so many in museams one has to be salvageable! Not to mention NS is rumored to be trying to get the 2-6-6-6 redone for excursions! Alagheney's the most powerful!

  • Just a secret. a new video was released of UP using a diesel to move a big boy to their steam headquarters. cant spell out the city. they might be working on it...

  • Where is this video?

  • south of cheyenne

  • I saw it on Google vid. I forgot what I typed in sorry

  • If it's the one I'm thinking of where a diesel was pushing the old girl...they were just moving it........

  • It wasn't that. It might of been but I don't think so.

  • You could be thinking of 4023. It's in Omaha. They moved it because they were turning the park into a convention center. That's been a couple years though.

  • NICE WORK MAN I APLAUSE YOU

  • Great video - you have my admiration for driving in those packs of chasers. I've been chasing Post Trains and the Challenger since '94, and the pack gets bigger and scarier every year.

  • Fantastic!! I would have loved to been there to see these locomotives in action.

  • Too cool for words. How long were you able to follow them?

  • WOW! That is cool. :D They are just massive machines.

  • Thanks,

    Great video!

  • Goodie now i can watch it on my ipod... Super Loco..I have two from riverossi in HO scale with sound and DDC decoders..

  • Phat

  • I remember that the challenger(3985) always ran into some kind of issue.

  • The last time I saw these two doublehead was in 85?

  • I didnt last long 3985 ran in to issues on the sat morning run back to Cheyenne- Hey tried to link your video response and it didnt happen try again its good!

  • The Challenger is a marvel of engineering and design. The smaller drivers designed for powerful frieght service are apparent in this video, however it has no trouble with topend passenger speeds just like the 844.

  • The Challengers were designed to run at 70 mph. They were the largest locomotives that regularly hauled passenger trains. 844 could go 100+ mph. Today's tracks are set up for diesels, and there are speed limits.

  • What? No comments? This is fantastic! A ride into history - power, nostalgia and steam. What more could anyone want? Just wonderful...

  • Awesome. too bad they don't take the 844 and the 3985 out more often.

If i was a billionare, first thing i would do is make sure these engines plus a few others would continue to run exscursions at least everyother year.

    amazing.
