Thomas Jefferson orignally put in the declaration of Independence that no man had the right to enslave another, however it was removed because delegates from North and South Carolina, as well as Georgia, demanded it or else they threatened that they would not join the soon to be US and they would have fought against the North. So if Jefferson didn't get rid of that clause, we'd have had a revolution as well as a civil war

@Avaindiana Kenya is on the eastern coast of Africa. Most slaves (SOME of which were sold to Europeans by other African tribes) came from Western Africa. So no, Obama is not descended from slave owners, unless you mean his mother's side.

BTW, slavery in African cultures was generally more like indentured servitude (like what the English did to the Irish, Scottish, etc.) and not for life. Slaves were paid, could own property and could eventually buy their freedom and become members of the tribe.
