I went one better and played it. Yeah, I'll admit it's pretty bad compared to most of the other Atari games I've played, but even having played it I can't see how it nearly destroyed the industry. I mean, I've played worse on more modern consoles, and they didn't even destroy the companies that made them much less cripple the console gaming industry on an entire continent.

The problem, though, was that Atari grossly overestimated demand by making more copies than actual installed machines. And, despite your defense, E.T. could've been designed better. It was still a relatively complicated game that was somewhat hard to understand, which, in a way, may be a game that was ahead of its time, although the fact that the design and code was rushed in weeks was also a factor.

I liked Pac-Man for the Atari 2600, because it was a fun new way of seeing something that was done several times before in the same exact way.  ET, however, was in fact terrible, any way you slice it. I played them for the first time in 2003.

Actually the landfill site that Atari used to get rid of there unsellable E.T. games was in Elnagordo New Mexico. The site would not have been in Nevada becouse Atari wanted to keep this under raps as much as possiable, so they picked a landfill out in the desert.
