I think what he meant by hack is that he downloaded this as a ROM or some sort of format and played it on a emulator or something else.

He could've easily changed the files in which control Sonic's ddesign manually or use some sort of editor to do it..

I predict, that Sonic shall be a playable character in Super Smash Bros. Brawl and his Final Smash will be transforming into either Super Sonic, or Dark Spine Sonic (most likely Dark Spine because DS isn't invincible) and his theme will be that song, Live and Learn or It doesn't matter.
