i believe he took the money from K .Asif , he didnt return it as some people might say. because after this movie he used to demand one lakh from recording companies to cut a record, of course he was never paid this amount. otherwise there would have been a greater number of recordings by him.
Records show he did not take the money for him working for hindi fillms is like reducing the value of indian shastriya sangit. He was awarded Padmabhushan for his calibre. Waseem
A masterpiece in black and white. The color print makes not justice to this high art embedded in the Bade' Gulam Ali Khan's immortal singing. This is when I started learning the intricacies of classical vocal; and becam afan of Ustad ji forever.
As mystifying as this song is, it always gives me a feeling of nervousness and unease when I hear it, because I used to listen to it in the car on the way to meeting a guy I really liked once, but wasn't supposed to hang out with.
Most romantic, passionate song that could have been ever sung ....any gal will be seduced into the arms of her lover if this song is played..its sth which writhes ur heart from your body
badae g ali took 25000 to sing this song actually he was gawaya that is why he denied noushad saab that he will not sing but noushad enforced him to singing by telling him about this HISTORICAL movie he thought if he would ask huge amount producer will run away but k asif piad him 10000 as advance for this particular song remember during those days lata and rafi saab used to take 500 for a song this was dedication devotion with his work and THE REST IS THE HISTORY
wow - singing and acting and the whole B/W experience is unique. dont think i've seen this film..but know this song coz my parents played them all even in the 80s!!
I agree - I prefer this scene in black and white. There's a certain magic about it which doesn't fully translate to the colored version. This is one of my favorite songs from the film. Beautiful music and picturization - One can't help but get drunk off the mood of this scene. The atmosphere so intoxicating!
He rarely sung for movies. this is an exception. Only when director K. Asif requested and showed him this entire scene, did Bade Ghulam Ali agreed to sing for Mughal-e-Azam. He was actually romantic at heart and liked this secret rendezvous of Salim and Anarkali in the film a lot.
Yeh i agree :P. My dad is a big time Dilip Kumar's fan he met Dilip twice in india. He told me this story, Ustad Ghulam asked alot of money in return of this song to avoid singing in this film. He never liked singing in films, but K asif accepted the conditions and Ustad Ghulam was trapped to sing :P.
@alihammadshah But Do you Know Naushaad said to him? "What he asked for is lot less than whaat he deserves". But when He did finish the performance he did not accept the money. So everyone will remember this incident and will not ever bother him with such request. According to him performing in film is like reducing the calibre of bharatiya shastriya sangeet. According to him peoples heartfelt appriciation in auditoriam is worth lot more than working in film companies. wow! ....Waseem
barhe ghulam ali khan never sung for movies, when he was asked to sing this song he refused the director kept insisting, to get rid of the producer and directer ustad said "ok i will take 20,000 Rs. to sing this song" at time singers were paid 300 to 500 Rs. for a song. his demand was immediately accepted and song was recorded.
I love old movies, they are the best with the greatest impact. What a wonderful clip and of course the voice of Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan, that's only once! Thanks so much for posting.
This is not aada chautaal. It's Chaanchar of 14 beats, a taal popularly used for Thumris. Aada Chautal is more commonly used for Khayal; many recordings of Kesarbai Kerkar, for example, are set to that taal.
Ustad Bade Ghulam Ali Khan on Surendra (as Tansen)with Madhubala (Anarkali) and Dilip Kumar (Price Salim) in the frame. Also making a brief appearance is Nigar Sultana (Bahar).

I can't hear the theka very clearly, but if I had to guess I'd say adachautal.

I don't know taal, but raag is Sohani. Bade Gulam Ali had a similar composition in Sohoni "Prem Ki Maari Katyaar"
