Bout frickin time a hose man knows what he's doing. I don't get the guys who stick to hard stream. Fog and semifog touch more fire than stream especially on carfires,
@USMC3531tsd You're dead wrong. You use a straight stream (not a "hard" stream) on vehicle fires so you can knock down the fire from a distance so you can cool things like shocks and door struts that can explode and impale you. You also need a larger volume of water directly on the burning Mag Alloys to cool it enough to overcome the BTU's it puts off. When the bulk of the fire is knocked down, THEN you can move close in and use a fog stream to hit hard to reach areas.
@KISSman4307 or as my captian says while I was on work term with Halifax regional fire and emergency services in nova scotia.......a quint is a engine with a ladder lol
@2009jimmy2009 Yes it is some kind of metal burning. Metal react with water and burns intensifying the fire. Most metal fire can not be put out with water. About half way though the video they switch to foam with works some what better to smother and cool the burning metal.
@mikezaq1 It's Magnesium Alloy that's burning, Chevy uses a lot in their van's. And it wasn't the foam that worked better, it was switching to a straight stream that did it. You have to have a lot of GPM's put directly on the burning metal to overcome the BTU's being put out by the fire.
@ffjsb <"You have to have a lot of GPM's put directly on the burning metal to overcome the BTU's being put out by the fire" Wrong, the water pressure is actually blowing away the the molten metal destroying the fuel not cooling it. Magnesium will still burn even if you drop it in the ocean, you have to blow off the slick to put that shit out.
Where is the straight stream wtf. Fog on the front of the car, is he out of his mind? The car is still on fire and hes running all over it with the fog on.
i like the use of all fire fighters wen the nozzle man could use the extra help. and did u guys start putting class B right off the bat or is that class A. and i dont see how shooting the side of the door will help with suppression
My first car fire I got chewed out because I took the nozzle too the front of the car and blasted the car. Where you should be taking the car on a 45 degree angle so shit doesnt pop off at you. Thank god I know now because it really happens.
Exactly what I was thinking!! I cringed every time he passed in front of the Van.. Not to metion what was in the back?? I'm sure they asked the driver.
The FF'er on the second attack line freaked me out too?? Visor up no gloves?? I could just see that burning Magnesium landing on his hand or splashing his face. Ugh! Not to mention the Captain right in there.. No gloves, visor up no SCBA? And these are career guys..
Yep, even here in Europe where we like to get really close, I cringed when I saw how close into the side door with magnesium shooting out. We'd switch to thicker foam here, and stay just a little further away.
they are becoming a lot more popular because it's a lot lighter metal.. better fuel mileage and all that shit, but vehicle manufactures never bother to put out saftey messages about newer vehicles that they're using magnesium in. Just remember to wear full ppe, that shit would really burn.
Hey man I was just kidding, I actualy had several canadians in my rookie school class. I have alot of respect for you guys in the great white north. Rookie school in Arkansas in the middle of summer is definately not something most of yall are used to.
Thanks for the respect. Maybe you should leave the south and realize Canada isnt in snow all year round. We have the heat in the summer, and something your not familiar with, cold & snow.
@KISSman4307 A Quint(e) is a fire apparatus that combines an Engine or Pumper (the one with all the hoses and water) with an Aerial (big ladder truck). To qualify as a Quint, a truck must have its own water source (water tank inside the truck), multiple diameter hoses, an assortment of ground ladders, and an aerial ladder of I believe it has to be at least 75 feet. Hope this helps, cheers.
Magnesium. Those "exploding" sparks you see are caused by the water hitting the burning magnesium. Magnesium burns so hot that it seperates the Hydrogen molecule from the oxygen molecule, thereby feeding the fire.
Magnesium fires are a pain to put out in vehicle fires. The more water or foam you put on it, the bigger it gets. A small shot from a CO2 extingusher would have taken care of it rather than waste all that foam on it. Great video!
How much does a safety inspection pass on a commercial vehicle cost now a days hmmm????

@johnnybull100 Also the bench seat brackets, 15 passenger Chevy's are a bitch to put out; you basically have to fill them with water.

Wasn't what the firefighter did at :53-1:01 dangerous? Standing right in front of the hood of the car?
Also, look like they have pretty low man power.
captivemrhanky 3 years ago
It's a 4 man quint crew. All you need for a car fire.
deltapride10001 3 years ago
Oh, sorry, thought it was 3. I know you don't need much manpower for a car fire, just looked like the actual manning of the quint was low.
captivemrhanky 3 years ago
That was a stubborn one, the flames kept reigniting even using foam. Surely that wasn't burning fuel splattering around in the cab?
