  • mel were did u get duncan from any special website that u got him from????

  • I was browsing Horsetopia and came across him, actually.

  • yah thats a good thing do u live in new jersey

  • Yes

  • nice save before u fell off

  • Thank you, but I didn't fall off in this ride. :)

  • Oh my godd. what a little cutie you have! good job for keeping at it and not getting scared yourself. I know how scary those flowers can be. Hahah.

  • Thanks! :)

  • Wow, that looked rough... is he still doing that?

  • hahahah horses are so funny =D

  • my thouroughbred does this and worse whenever i take him ove a jump he doesn't look at first, its so annoying! i have to lead him up to each and evry jump so he knows exactly how big/wide it is lol

  • The flowers really have changed! Good job! How do you stay in the saddle with those massive bucks and leaps? I seems nearly impossible!

  • hes so cute n a very good jumped how tall is he in hands ??

  • He's a little over 15.3. Thank you!

  • Wow he is gorgeous! Why would anyone critisize you for that, I thought that you stayed with him and held it together remarkabley well...

  • Thank you very much! :)

  • lol you never know when they will come alive!

  • wow! he's beautiful and so is the place you ride XD

  • Thanks :)

  • Hey he never stopped-good job and I commend you for having the vet look at him.

  • Thanks; yeah, it was just a little funky for my liking, and I'd rather be safe than sorry.

  • you did a great job. He was certainly feeling good that day.

  • Haha, thanks! Every now and then, when he sees a new jump or something on a familiar jump is different, we do something interesting in the air, hehe.

  • i think you have really good equatation! You have a very nice horse as well! hopefully my horse will be like that soon! were working on it!

  • Thank you! I'm sure you'll do fabulous! :) It's all about practice and perseverance. :)

  • your horse is sooooo pretty and hes a really good jumper on the other videos

  • Thanks! :)

  • your welcome what breed is he??

  • American Paint Horse

  • cute pony!

  • Thanks.

  • Thank goodness there aren't any butterflies around...(I ride a horse that actually runs away from them.)

You still did a good job, you didn't fall or lost a stirrup or reins. Which can be easy to do when surprises occur!

  • Wow, butterflies?! Dunc had a monarch butterfly almost smack him in the face during a lesson outside, but he didn't acknowledge it. That would be pretty crazy! Thank you :)

  • don't worry, every barn has that one bugger jump that your horse is always afraid of.

  • Good for you! I think that would have done me in -- physically and mentally! Great job! Keep up the good work. My mare spooks at many things -- I'm sure new flowers would have been just the beginning!!!

  • Aw, thanks! We should form a spooky horse support group!

  • I could really use one! I finally have found a horse trainer that is using natural horsemanship as opposed to force. He is awesome. Jersey Girl freaked out at first -- rearing, bucking etc, -- but within 10 minutes, he had her relaxed and docile. Yesterday my daughter worked with her and could lead her without a rope after training. Hopefully we will eliminated most of the spooks!!

  • I think a lot of it just comes down to experience--getting acquainted to new situations and stimuli. This just showed me that I have to bring a lot of new flowers and other jump filler into his normal school area so he can learn to accept change.

  • Wow Duncan, that was ... interesting! He certainly keeps things exciting. Glad to see that you stayed on and everyone was okay. I too experienced minor whip lash last week from a horse! I was riding Lucy through a gymnastic that was supposed to go: fence, stride, fence, stride, fence. Lucy decided to give me: fence, stride, fence, fence! I didn't expect her to make an in-and-out a bounce, much less on the last element! She felt compelled to make a big deal because the fences went up. :-P

  • Oooh, that is the worst! :-/ Nothing like the unexpected bounce to give you a free chiropractic adjustment!

  • Oh it's tough to do everything you can to keep from catching them in the mouth! That happens to me a lot since Callie is a baby. But she's getting a ton better. And you come down pretty hard and it definatly gives you whiplash! Good job giving him the rein!

  • Thanks! My body makes all sorts of terrible snap, pop, and crunch noises ever since Duncan and I started working together. I can't imagine why. ;)

  • haha those stupid fowerss! your horse is soo cute :)

  • Haha, thank you! He's gotta get used to it--course designers at big shows love the floral arrangements! :)

  • Wow someone didnt like the new flowers. Lol you handled it well.

  • Haha, thank you! ;)

  • LOL I love how he comes up to it just fine, but then as soon as he takes off.. "OH CRAP! IT'S GONNA EAT ME!" *launch* XD

  • Heh, that about sums it up!

  • you really handled it well. Hope u ok

  • I'm good, thanks! I only had one day of sleeping with a pillow under my back, fortunately!

  • Haha, seriously! I can't even describe what it felt like--maybe sitting on a dolphin at Sea World as it's doing the high jump trick? There was no way I was ending the evening on that crazy note! I'm curious what this guy'll do the first time I point him at a liverpool. Perhaps we should start some tarp work now...

  • i hate when that happens, we call it a deer jump when they jump like that! haha one pony in particular likes to do it often at our barn for scary jumps or just certain distances. but i think you did an amazing job staying with him both of the times, along with the takeoff/buck. in my opinion, you handled everything perfectly. great job!!

  • Thanks! Yeah, Timmy has quite the deer leap on him, too. Duncan's is a little different in that he'll curl up his front end as he does it, whereas Timmy's head goes straight up and is almost in the way. It certainly makes life interesting!

  • woooow, that was quite the leap over the jump, that was also quite the buck... FUN FUN!!! :P lol

  • Oh yes! My own personal rodeo! :)

  • Haha, thanks! :)

  • Woah well done! It reminds me of the way he jumped his first jump with you, (or one of the first cant remember) Glad your both ok though it didnt look to nice poor neck! But well done your balence must be very good!

  • Haha, yeah! Thank you! :)

  • haha thats how my horse jumps all the time!

  • Free spinal adjustment! :-P

  • LOL

  • As always your video description is fabolous to read and as usual i enjoyed it tremendously thanks for that. As for the riding itself i dont think anyone could have any critique beeing honest you handled the landings as best as you could you stayed on wich not many of us could do and on a more important note you made sure he wasnt having any physicall injuries. Id say just take it slow with the flowers just like with the leafy greens.

  • Thank you! Yeah, we'll work through this. When we someday get around to bigger shows, he's gonna have to deal with all sorts of floral arrangements. I think it's just because it was a familiar jump that suddenly became unfamiliar. Either way, we'll get it figured out. I did the best I could, and I'm glad he at least went over and didn't do a sliding stop. :)

  • Thats very true. If he had refused or run out that may have been a safer option physically for you both but mentally thats a harder obsticale to overcome no pun intented. By the way i saw some big dragonflies yesterday when we went to see lady they came up pretty close and from head to tail were about as long as the lenght of my hand i dint get the camera out fast enough but when i asked they said if the weather stays like this they should be back so ill try and get some footage for you.

  • Awesome! Hopefully they will!

  • Oh dear well done for going with him though

  • Hehe, thanks!

  • well at least he didn't stop or ran away from the jump, he tried to do it any way, if my horse would do something like that to me I would probably land on the neck, I could never jump that as gracefull as yu did =)

  • Yeah, I was quite thrilled that he didn't outright refuse the jump. I've landed on a neck or five in my time, that's for sure! :)

  • oofff!! Well sat gal! that was an interesting day :D and all because the colours of the flowers were different!!Silly horsey :D

  • Thank you! It was definitely special!

  • Time to get on those "leafy purples"... ;) Hehe--this was really well done--love the song choice!

  • Seriously! Thanks for filming and catching the craziness for posterity!

  • great vid - lol - made me laugh - his expression is priceless - Im not going to touch it - scary flowers

well done for staying on - especially the first jump!

  • Thank you! I pictured them being like little piranhas, and he was trying to avoid getting nipped!

  • well ridden! you want to see a bad jump, go to my latest video lol, and that was a 2' crossrail over blocks... yeah, everyone has off days

  • Haha, I'll check it out!

  • lol very pretty horse

  • Thanks!

  • im sorry, but I just had to laugh at that jump!

though I was suprised at how well you managed to stay with him through it all, great job! :)

  • Thanks! I did what I could! I liked the expression on my face for it. haha

  • Mr.Spazzy!!

  • Indeed!

  • XDD That was the best spook ever.

  • When they happen with him, they tend to be memorable! Heh

  • lol He is turning out to be an amazing horse. You ride him very well. :D

Ha, my mare decided to skid, look at a panel jump then decided it would be okay to go over after I braced myself for a refusal.

  • That sounds like a free chiropractic adjustment. Arrgh.

  • Ahh! It seems like the invisible monsters are following you everywhere! ;) Even hiding in the flowers! Haha, but still, great job sticking with him. Hope your neck and your back feels better! :/

  • Yeah, I only had maybe one full day of some discomfort. I was just so happy he was okay. That's all that really mattered to me!

  • Haha that is the funniest thing. Duncan must be a smart boy to have such a keen eye for flower types! You did an amazing job staying with him, and watching the two of you never ceases to amaze me. Keep it up! (:

  • Thanks! I'm going to start playing with all sorts of flowers. A couple local craft shops are having massive clearance sales, so I will be stocking up and putting flowers everywhere. He doesn't miss a thing!

  • ohhh duncan :P ur a super tough rider to ride it again..id be shaking and saying "omg omg i may have whiplash!! hospitalll noww!" lol i hateee when they hop over jumps like that. and hav u ever had a horse trip really bad and you lose your reins and like fly forward? i got whiplash a few months ago from that :S anyway excellent riding and your position looks fantastic!! :)

  • I had that happen to me when I was around 14 years old...I had this Percheron mare who was usually lazy take off with me on a trail at a full gallop. She caught me totally off guard and got the reins away from me, then tripped pretty hard because she blasted through a washed-out area in the trail. Fortunately, she got her legs back under her and slowed down, but I was still fumbling for the reins. Thank God for big, thick Percheron manes. I basically clung to it for dear life!

  • Thank you! I wish he'd really jumped rather than leaped...I'd of loved to see what that would have looked like.

  • WOW mel! I've never seen Duncan buck like that before :S

he looked very naughty in this vid! good job staying on too!! dont you just hate those bad days? I know i do!! You still looked perfect on him as always :)

  • Aww, thanks! He will occasionally kick out in back if he gets fired up or if he's trying to swap his lead behind, but this was just sheer crazy. The turnout's been sporadic because of the nasty weather we've been having, so I can't blame him for having some pent up energy! This was after I lunged him a bit first!

  • Uh oh, I think the flowers tried to eat him! ;) Nicley sat!

  • The invisible cobras strike again!! Thanks! :)

  • wooh some big jumps!! good job as always :D

  • They were special jumps, that's for sure! Thanks!

  • hehe your welcome! and look what heels down do for u!! i have had to do that before, and i learned when a pony refuses a jump and its muddy out and u think ur gonna be thrown off, keep ur heels down so ur breeches don't get dirty :D

  • Props to you for sitting those wild antics! It's been a while since i've seen him so unpredictable, especially about fillers! :D It's good to see you guys eventually got through that outside line with confidence though. And that buck was wild! I'm positive I would have been sent flying. It's good you didn't get discouraged. You know as well as anyone that EVERY horse and rider has a bad day :P How's your neck??

  • My neck's good, much to my surprise. My lower back was funky for a day or two. I had to kind of wedge a pillow under my lower back to sleep the night after. I've been fine since, though. The buck really came out of nowhere. The ONLY thing that frustrated me when he did that was the spurt of speed at the beginning. It was like he jumped into warp speed. I was like "DUNCAN! You've been able to go THAT fast all this time, and you're JUST showing me NOW?!" ;)

  • Haha I cringed when i read your description of the neck sensation. I've felt that a time or two myself over the years - it's not fun. I'm glad to hear you weren't in too much paing though :) Oh the pains we go through to work with these guys! Hahah it's great that you got that buck on tape! And now you know he's capable of going that fast! I have no doubt that he still has tons more potential!

  • I was pretty impressed by how far he propelled himself into the air. It was an interesting glimpse into how strong his hind end is and how fast he can blast off!

  • Totally! He's a strong boy :) Btw it was great to read that you were so concerned and called the vet out to check him out. Sounds like you are just as paranoid as I am when it comes to horsey healt :D

  • Haha, you have no idea! I think a big part of it has to do with what I've been through with Clue. It's made me much more aware and proactive, but almost to a fault! :-P

  • Hahaha well nobody can blame you for being so proactive after all that you've been through with that crazy girl :D I'm pretty paranoid with my guy too. If he's acting off or start getting crazy in the turn out, it's always in the back of my mind that he could be hurt of will get hurt. I don't see any fault in being cautious - Duncan's a special buy and i'm sure nobody wants to see him hurt :)

  • Haha, thanks for reading my novella! I'm probably the most paranoid horse owner out there, and especially after I watched the clips that night and saw how he twisted, I wanted to make sure he didn't tweak anything. Fortunately, he didn't. He gets some serious bonus points for flexibility.

  • LOL! deffianty not! i had a bad fall on sunday. i hit my head so hard my teeth flew out of my mouth. my mom made an emergency vet call, checked on my horse... THEN drove me to the hospital! lol! but i dont blame her! i wouldve done the same! but i was like kncoked out! lol

  • Eeek, you had teeth get knocked out?! Ouch! Other than that, were you okay? Did you end up with a concussion? The most gross thing I've had happen to me was having a fingernail bent back so far it was ripped off most of the way. Eventually, it did fall off as a new one grew in under it. It was nasty--it hurt really bad, and when I went to wash it out, the water lifted my nail. My friend and I started screaming in the bathroom together.

  • That's gross! I would pass out in the bathroom! :S

  • It hurt a LOT--that's skin that's never meant to be exposed. When the water first hit it I couldn't even make words come out of my mouth. I had to keep Vetwrap on it until the nail finally came off all the way on its own, because Band Aids kept trying to stick to it. Not fun.

  • haha, duncon is so cute! that has hapened to me many times espically when we add somthing new to a jump, and I know the exact feeling you had in your neck, i was soo soar for like a week, I couldent turn my neck at all :)

  • I lucked out and didn't really feel it in my neck the next day, but I DEFINITELY felt it in my lower back. Did I make a chiro appt for me? Of course not. Did I make one for my horse? Naturally! :)
