  • Acually, that is a Second Person Shooter. It is just very similar to a Third Person Shooter. Maybe when he walks it could change in to third person, but not entirely.

  • 0:12

  • Totally disagree with levandrian and his anti-C# or perhaps Microsoft mentality but I think it's a wonderful language. Sure I've heard dozens of friends bicker about it being inferior but hell, C++ is "inferior" to Assembly so I don't get what your complaining about.

In time C# will be superseded with an even higher level language with even less "performance"... but for now, any performance issues will be alleviated with time by improvements to the components or updates to the system.

  • @JCFilms13 just go to the apress website, find the book there, and go to download content. The book is the xna 2: beginning to professional

  • HEEEEEESSSSS CCOOOOMMMIIIINN DDOOOOOWWWNN THEEEEE MOOUUNNNNTAAAAIIIINNN.......RUUUUUNNN!!!

  • can somone do a little research and see if this is the same base that makes the game Battleswarm cuz i swear it looks so similiar

  • graphic sucks...

  • @DarkGlobusO Okay, let's see you re-make call of duty MW2 graphics.

  • @DarkGlobusO Your nuts, graphics are amazing for a mostly individual effort! Did you make a better game?

  • gonna release for WINDOWS PHONE 7?

  • FIcou muito legal cara, vou dar uma olhada nesse livro. Isso q vc fez foi um tutorial do livro? abraço

  • motion sickness

  • i hate it when people put "enter your text here" and you move your mouse there expecting to find something.

  • wow gears of war for ps2

  • How did you make the graphics?

  • Hey there! I tried compiling the source code and after a lot of fiddling I got it to work, but the skybox doesn't show, and all the models face the opposite direction, the player faces the camera, the aliens behind is in the players face when they attack.

    Mind helping please?

  • The character movement is weird.

  • VERY VERY DOPE! I want to do this!

  • Very nice, but the terrain didn't appear very interesting.

  • personally i go by the philosophy of: No one has to go to college because college just lays out a guidelline to help you learn. Everyone has the potential to learn on their own and personally i believe it is better to learn through self trial and error than to be spoon fed the material at a school

  • That is unfortunate as having a degree allows you to get your foot into a job and also earn more money to make a living so you can continue to do what you want to do.

I go by the philosophy of: If someone tells you that you don't need to go to school, they are an idiot and you probably shouldn't listen to them.

  • You don't need to, but it sure as fuk helps.

  • It helps probably because for most people, it becomes about proving yourself and not failing.

But some just don't give a damn and get things done on their own, so yeah, with the proper material (widely available for free) you don't need college.

  • @justmikedamnit Also funny to think, most of the concepts taught at college were originally created by people that NEVER went to college.. people used to be capable of educating themselves and making their own discoveries, now we have a bunch of sheeple preaching the same ol' line who come out of college still not knowing anything

  • @yoman258 Depends on what profession you're in.. are you saying Bill Gates would've made MORE money if he had a college degree? It certainly never seemed to hold him back..

  • u learn better by doing

  • you dont need college to learn XNA. just learn on your own, experiment, and practice.

  • Don't JUST learn based on your own experience.

Get books, learn online, learn from other people's experiences, etc.

  • they need to make XNA compatible with C++, they would hit a larger group of people that way

  • @AudioMayhem100

never gonna happen. XNA would not work on unmanaged code. That would be going backwards. And to make it using managed c++ would be a waste of time because obviously...you could just use c#. lol

The whole point of this XNA thing is for microsoft to pull developers away from the old standards. Portability is only a matter of time...I think the future is headed for managed languages as the standard.

  • c++ is nowhere near as good to making games as this program is

  • wait wut

xna is a framwork to make small games and learn game programming

pretty much every commercial game is pure c++

  • Not really. You can make some pretty epic stuff with XNA. Something comparable to Half Life engine.

Probably nothing as good as Crysis or Call of Duty or something but if you have the knowledge to make something like that you won't be working alone on little projects.

Also, no commercial games are made in PURE C++, they use DirectX libraries.

C++ is of course faster than C# but it's also true that C++ is old, sooner or later game developers will make games in more modern languages.

  • @Darwin226 What does the library used have to do with the actual code the game is written in? If I use a library like say Ogre3D and then use Python bindings for said library and write my game in Python, it doesn't also mean I wrote it in C++ because Ogre is a C++ library.

Also, C is old as well but I don't see people dropping that to write an operating system in C# anytime in the future.

  • @levandrian C# is a multi platform language. Which needs to be compiled during Runtime!

It needs the .Net framework which is like a virtual machine like the Java VM...

So how would you program an OS which needs a framework, that needs another OS to work on...

C# is a language for APPS not for OS´s!

  • @MrGermanBratwurst First off, I never suggested someone writing an operating system in C#, I was just saying that because a language gets old doesn't mean it becomes obsolete. A lot of places still use languages older than C and C is used quite a bit as well(It's still one of my favorite languages to use.) There's a reason a lot of people still use C and C++ in place of higher level languages.

Also, look up the web based linux OS written in java. :D C# is for crap, not apps. C# is garbage.

  • @levandrian Wow...

Okay, C C++ are more low level hardware languages, of course.

But saying C# is crap is not good! I think, that C# has much more power than java( I still think Java is better ;D), but it is not an internet language.

C# is made for Apps. And C# does his job very very good! Very easy language, powerfull and not to small librarys!

.Net and C# is a good Software combination! And that you can use every .net language and mix it together is way better :D

    C# app with VB.Net lib

  • You have NO idea what you're talking about. Seriously.

  • What do game developers use? C++ or C#?

  • In XNA they use C#. But in most other cases they use C++ and other scripting languages to automate tasks in a game engine.

  • Yes that's right, C++ is pure scripting language... better keep your mouth shut next time.

  • I didn't say that. I said it can be used as one. I don't see why not.

  • C #(sharp)

  • both

  • wow. that's amazing. models remind me of GoW.

    again, pure awesomeness.

  • looks kinda like gears of war

  • Nice how much for this program

  • XNA Framework + Visual C# Express = Free

  • Nice Job there....that looks alot better then what ive seen.

  • i have this book! Beforehand however i had only been programming for about 5 months and found this somewhat hard to understand, so i put the book away. i have been programming now for about a year and have recently gotten back into! Much easier to understand! my problem was i didnt know enough c# to put this book to good use... anyone planning on purchasing should have good background knowledge in C#

  • hey, i wanna start out programing now( im 15) so i can mayb make a xna game thats half decent b4 i go to collage, so that i will already have experence and wil have more of a chance of getting in, have you got any tips for how i could start off learning how to program??

  • Why would you say that??? C# is way less difficult to start with... The whole reason XNA is for C# is because C# is an easy to learn and easy to use language, since you don't need to worry about memory management. (Actually, XNA can be used under F# too, but that's another story)

C++ is harder to learn, and C++ programmers usually hate moving to C# because they don't like the idea of managed code once they've gotten used to C.

C# and C++ are have different mindsets.

  • lmao that is so true, i do dislike it

  • if u want il sen u an ebook im reading which is a book on amazon which is friken ausome it covers everthing down to AI artifisial intelegence and making a FPS that can be played on pc and 360

  • going to a college is based on your performance in school.

but, if you want some tips on programming: practice, practice, and more practice.

  • my uncle had 3 GCSE's and made a flash game tht had 100,000's of players and he got into a great collage because of it

  • this book have a CD?

  • No. But you can all download all the examples and source code at APress website.

  • Thanks!

  • hey bruno! sorry to bother! I have your book... Just wondering, that last example game has dynamic lightning??

  • The shooter game? Yes.

  • I have your book.

It's awesome, except I still have some questions. :)

  • Ha, you did not create that "Monster" model. I've seen it on multiple sites for download.

  • You are right! I did not create any 3D model, since I'm a programmer! =P Check the source code for credits!

  • OOOOH!!!!! LOOKS ALOT LIKE GEARS OF WAR!! :D AWSOME MAN! did you think of gears of war when you made it? :D

  • This is exactly the kind of game I'm attempting to make, but I don't have a clue about 3D programming. I've been looking at the chase camera example, but I don't fully understand how it works yet. I guess I'll look at the book you mentioned. Hopefully there's a more recent edition out.

  • Legs should move faster. Im currently creating a FPS on blender. fun fun fun.

  • yeah me too. if i have finished my FPS in blender i will try XNA

  • Just FYI (I did exactly what you are planning to do): Prepare for a BIIIIG difference. If you've never programmed before, good luck. If you have, trust me, it's a blast (especially when you know how to make your own models)!

  • i have programmed before i knew blender. the hardest thing is the AI, but i know how to make it :)

  • it is related with LOD and CROWD.

  • Very nice character model a little more polishing and better environments will probaly make this the best hombrew third person shooter

  • Very cool, the animation is very smooth as well, and everything looks like it should be there. I just got a book on XNA 3.0 today.

  • looking4aswissgirl, you're a complete fuckin' idiot, I'd like to see you do better.

damn you're fuckin' sad, I don't know what's more sad, your pathetic commenting or your username, both, are pretty damn pathetic.

Good game, I aspire to work with XNA once I've finished learning C#.

    thanks for the upload

  • Your comments make me feel really sorry for you...

First, XNA does not support the fixed function pipeline, so you cannot draw a triangle without using shaders.

Second, you cannot independently make and sell games for consoles using unix.

Lastly, OpenGL is really a good option, if you want to avoid all the innovation that DirectX and XNA provides.

  • can that book help you if you have xna 3.0? is it the same thing?

  • there's a book for 3.0

  • well...do you know where I can download it?

  • how much easier is it with xna to make games than for example with blender?

  • Blender3D uses only logic programming. XNA is more powerful, and harder to develop for. Still, XNA is a much better choice than Blender3D.

  • u dont know that there is python in blender?

u can use the lb's (ligic bricks) and python

  • Nice name, simple but well done.. í have to do a xna game for a final proyect in my programing class.. i don´t need to do something very complicated, its just a very simple game using the basics of XNA.. but i want to do something descent, does anybody knows a tutorials or have any idea of en ease but descent game?

  • good example of a basic third person shooter game

  • for xna if i were to create a game would i have to build a engine and what would i need to learn to make xna games? .net framework maybee or c# language?

  • C# and a bit of 3d maths ,

but you have to work hard .. try the lesson twice .. or even more .. just don't leave a lesson(with a proper education method) without being 100% understanding it , then you'll be able to do whatever you want

  • I would also recommend you start with smaller things like 2D game design instead of jumping into the 3D world otherwise you will be lost within the first few pieces of code. I have been working with 2D for a week and I can make a good decent 2D game but I am at no level for 3D programming. lol

Its a good idea to learn a good amount of C# before you start learning about the XNA API Language.

You can download the XNA API and Visual Studio C# 2008 for free from the Microsoft download page.

  • those look like corpsers from gears of war lol

  • How much would this game engine cost?

  • xna is free

  • OH Cool... <3 is it easy?

  • I's an API of C#, so if you know C# very well then yes, it's easy

  • XNA isn't a game engine. Its a DLL Wrapper for DirectX. It is Free from the Microsoft page. All in all it takes a while to get used to.

  • Looks Great

  • i kno this came from the book he probly maniulated it a lil i still like the game design and i applaud him so if you going to send me a message bad mouthing me pls does it with some more sense pls

  • whats with the bad framerate?

  • can u give a link to download and play this

  • COOL

  • you read the beginners xna from novice to prfessional book becuase unless your aleksandro then you just followed the book... still nice tho

  • how the fu** do you know if he read it? he may not of done. It MIGHT be his own game! So just tkae a step back and THINK before you say stuff like that...

  • duh bro i dont kno whu u think u is da internet cop o sumtin nig bro but i have the book that this came from and i talk to the guy he said he ogt this from the book so stop frontin if u have any more problem pls reply thank you, Have a nice day

  • lol i C i got no reply from ur smat comment a few days ago do i guessed you read the desxription and figured i was right nig

  • What the hell is this guy SAYING...?

  • i said lol i see i got now reply from your smart comment a couple of days ago i guessed you read the description and knew i was right... someone on here was saying i was wrong about this game coming from a book and i was trying to explain to them about it sorry for the bad typing

  • Can you do 2D games like Zelda: A Link To The Past or Final Fantasy for the NES and SNES on this or is it just for 3D?

  • Yes 2d games are possible, and in fact easier to code than 3d games :)

  • you can do 2D as well as a matter of fact its a lot easier ... you can make a remake of portal if you pretty much wanted to XNA lets you do anything as long as you have the know how

  • aah ok, thanks for the info. I was thinking something like Zelda: A Link To The Past or Link Awakening or maybe a Super Nintendo style RPG

  • always here to help ;-)

  • SUperNintendo style RPG would be extra easy because they have like RPG starter kit which is like that.

  • you need to show gun fires in this game

  • your right! that might be why it says third person shooter! idiot.

  • lol, TheLurkingNinja = Fail WaKaKaKa

  • So basicaly know nothing about making video games. So if i get a book and get XNA. I could slowly start making my own game?

  • In theory, yes...if you are willing to learn how to make games. If you have the patience to learn and put forth the effort, XNA is an incredible tool. Don't expect it to make games for you, though.

  • o no. Im completley willing to learn and i relize it takes hard work. But using just xna, i can make different boards, and AI, and does it have good graphics or is that a complete different thing

  • The short answer is "yes, you can make different boards (or levels, rooms, whatever), AI and good graphics with XNA."

However, it all depends on your knowledge of C# (the programming language you will use to initialize your objects like levels, run AI, and control your game) and your proficiency with any graphic creation programs you will use, whether Photoshop, 3DS Max, or MS Paint(lol).

Also, graphics can be dependent on your C# skills as well.

XNA allows you to bring everything together.

  • thanks

  • mi ricorda mass effect, gears of war e lost planet

  • Mass effect, anyone?

  • Where can I download the game?

  • Good advertising! I'm buying that book.

  • can u code in a crosshair?

  • can you create a game for the first xbox

not xbox 360 but the first xbox that came out.

  • Duh, no.

What the f*ck makes you think Microsoft would support one of their newer technologies on an outdated system most people have stopped playing on?

  • Complimenti!

  • do you hve to hve 360 for this??

on the site it says something about it..

  • Very awesome looking game. I'm gonna check out the program, interested in this stuff

  • What the FUCK?

waht som nice graphics man! hey! can u pass me da link? for downloading the editor...

  • o search xna on google and u should come up to like xna cummunity games thingy ull know when u see it

  • @Drokua89: Lol, you sound like an idiot. "Are you fucking illiterate you shit." You didn't even use a question mark. You're not much better than him, so don't complain.

  • That's just pathetic.

  • No worries, he's probabley just jealous.

  • this looks nice man im going to try get that software

  • Thi's game code is taken from a cool book :P...

  • that looks awesome! great work dude!

  • DOES XNA SUPPORT 3DS MAX BIPED

  • its almost like gears

  • kinda reminds me of Mass Effect

  • does look great just not sure if its for 360 coz i was hoping to make one abit like it

  • is this for PC or 360?

  • Both!

  • Graphics look great!

  • Thanks!

  • very nice graphics but lol nice physics gameplay

  • wow, I bought your book and have been reading for a while and I didnt even notice the 3d person shooter chapter :S I cant wait to reah it... :D great book spent my money wisely

  • I hope you enjoy the book a lot. Thanks!

  • CAN YOU USE A 3DS MAX BIPED IN XNA

  • should be able too...

  • You can, as long as your exporter plugin for FBX or X supports it.

  • nice stuff!

    I bought ur book!

So ill be getting there soon! hehe

  • Thanks! Also, you might want to check the XNAnimation library that I'm working on.

  • For XNA Game Studios 1.0, what graphics creator should I use? I mean, what do I use to create everything?

  • You should use XNA 2.0 because it is compatible with Xbox and XBLA. Just check the FAQ at the creator´s club forum.

  • Ah ok tnx :)

  • Any chance i can have a look at the source ??

  • The source code was released in April. You can check it at Apress page. Just download the code of the book Beginning XNA 2.0

  • looks good i have just installed XNA game studio 2.0 but i have to a microsoft thing C# or something but when i try to download it it wont ley me :'( brings a tear to my eyew when u see wot u can do wid this stuff lol

  • Hi. Check out the Creator's Club website, it has a FAQ (on its forum section) that covers many problems installing and using XNA.

  • One question which website did you use for resources and education? Was it the xna creators club online or some other website? Please reply...

  • The XNA documentation is very good. Besides that I usually go to Creator's Club, Ziggyware, Sharpgames and Shaw blog. They are great resources! ;)

  • What modeling program did you use?

  • The Marine model was made by Carlos Augusto and he used Maya. The beast (spider) model was made by Psionic and I'm not sure where he modeled it.

  • ok, thanks ;)

  • Gears of war

  • i could use this now if only ms would up the size limit

  • Amazing!

Your Works and Speed is great!

  • thanks

  • you think i can get the codes plz.

  • You can download the source code at Apress website. Just look for the source code of the book Beginning XNA 2.0. And if you want a more detailed explanation of the code, consider buying the book! =)

  • hey thnx man and the vid was pretty sick

  • this is just a book u can download the source code online.......

  • how did you get it into third person

  • Hi, I didn't understand your question.

  • looks cool

  • awesome!
