  • Toda vez que escuto esta versão lembro do Gil Baia.

  • Is this seriously Canadian Brass? I haven't seen all that much of their stuff but they have a great reputation, and I've watched another version of this tune. The players look like different players to me and well, frankly, this sucks. I'm sure flaming will ensue, but if you listen without your fanboy earphones on you'll realise this is only amateur quality.

  • I agree completely. If you don't like the video, don't watch it.

  • i saw them with the nashville symphony. they played this for their encore.

    beast.

  • wow. im 14 and i play trumpet and this is awesome! 1st chair in my band!

  • As far as Gene's improv goes, obviously it's a weakness of his. There are better jazz trombonists out there, but he's paid to be a classical/chamber musician that dabbles in jazz/dixieland. I would say the same of all these guys. Fantastic musicians who have skills that span many musical styles. Are they perfect at all of them? No. This tune proves that. I appreciate your opinion and understand where you're coming from, but these are fantastic musicians who have the ability to pull of this tune.

  • MFHorn683:

I agree with all you say. They are very good players.

But I think sometimes success breeds laziness. I don't think it would be that hard to do some listening and find out how to play stylistically. Most classical players think if you slap in a 6/8 rhythm, you've got it. I know that if you do that, you've got it wrong.

I'm not saying learn to improvise, because that takes a lifetime, but to at least approach the style with some thoughtfulness, or don't do it.

  • Boy I love when people feel the need to critique well-known instrumentalists on their playing. It actually really bothers me. Please don't trash a video with negative crap like that. "It's unfunny and unstylistic, and Gene's improve is very mediocre."...really? come on now. Nothing better to say, Indoctus? I actually thought it was a fun performance, and pretty well done at that. I'd enjoy listening some recordings of YOURS. Maybe hear a few jazz licks, or some better-than-mediocre improve?

  • trumpetmaster09:

I disagree. Gene's solo is sub-par, and by the way, not even an improvised solo, as he plays the same one (same notes, and same bad rhythm) on another video.

Now you can enjoy these guys if you like. There's probably something worthwhile. But if you're hoping to learn anything about jazz, you had better move beyond this stuff pretty damn fast.

  • Haha...alright, man. Guess my point wasn't made clear.

  • trumpetmaster09:

No, your point was clear. However I didn't find it very meaningful.

  • don't t alk shit about one of the worlds best brass quintets ..that really makes me mad

  • pokemonfan20049:

I'm quite happy that the last dying vestiges of Nazi Germany is some indigent ex- patriot German hiding behind a monitor typing meaningless threats.

  • pokemonfan20049:

I can only presume that this is a strongly worded message to those north of the Mason-Dixon line.

  • Lol, I doubt he even knows what that line is... All he is is big words. I think that a 15 year old that finds nothing better to do than flame people for criticizing and debating music really needs to get a life. Like go play an instrument and learn what music really is.

  • bassbone1785:

    Agreed.

Some people get quite insecure when they hear someone else criticize what they like.

  • And I must also say as a trombone player, this definitely wasn't the best Gene has played this solo. However the point has been made again and again that his strong point isn't the improve or jazz, so I don't really think less of him. In fact I its kind of a reality check that even the greats have their off days. He's only human like the rest of us.

  • the 'bone player may be lacking, but i have seen those people play that song at a different concert and the 'bone wasn't lacking.

  • The trombone player, Gene Watts, is my pop. To me he and they can do no wrong.

  • Both the trombone and the tuba seem to be lacking. Is this really the canadian brass?

  • it still is. he just got old

  • No trumpet "dream team" will ever recreate the magic of Mills and Romm. That being said, CB are and forever will be the absolute best brass group on the planet.

  • est-ce que c'était à la salle Maurice O'Bready à Sherbrooke??

  • Esses kra sao d+...

    Tocam pra caramba!

  • I love this music. I play trumpet in a brass quintet.Does somebody know were I can find the music sheet for this ? Apparently they don't need it.... but I do !

  • If you need sheet for "Saint's Halleluja", I don't have. But if you are searching for brass quintet sheets, contact me. I've got a lot of sheets (also Canadian's) and we can exchange them.

  • Thanks,I tell "the boss" and I contact you.

  • @berghemboy hey can i have the sheet for this?

  • I bought the exact score with full parts from the canadian brass store online, the parts got to me in no problem and we even played this piece at our music camp this summer. It's also surprisingly easy to memorize.

  • CB have a full set of music out, our Brass group has been running some of it as part of our set. Most of it comes in three levels, easy med and hard, and i have also played concert band arrangements of this piece.

  • Génial :-D
