Catholics trashing protestant videos (here)....I flip over to a "Catholics Come Home" video, and protestants are bashing it relentlessly. We all follow the same Jesus, and there are those out there who feast on our bickering. Has anyone here ever thought about the things that UNITE us? Hard times are coming, we all know that. How about a little Christian kindness and maybe some unity?
Luther erred in his continuance of Persecuting of Hebrews. Much Good was gained by the Reformation but the Scriptural Command to Bless the Jew has been Sadly overlooked. @huguenot67 I always thought that our most dreadful and determined persecutor was Satan himself...through whatever agency. My sister is Roman Catholic, and a cantor at her church. I am a Southern Baptist deacon. We've declared peace. She said that she's OK with us singing Ave Verum Corpus if we really want to...and I let her borrow my Sacred Harp shape-note hymnbook. There isn't much time left....Let go of unimportant things.
@JTB1956 I too have Roman Catholic family members whom I love very much. I cannot, however, consider the idolatry which the Church of Rome still teaches an unimportant thing. We must warn them to repent for tomorrow is promised to none of us.
@huguenot67 Organizations/Parties/MovementsReligious sect etc...none of these things save anybody. You talk about the Roman Church....I'm talking about people. I don't imagine that outward trappings mean much to the Master...and for me it's best to let him judge.
@JTB1956 The outward trappings don't bother me as much as the turning of Mary and the "Saints" into idols (dulia & hyperdulia), the Unbiblical doctrine of salvation by works, purgatory, etc. Scripture says that we will be judged by God's word. Our friends in the Church of Rome need to hear the Scripture. Christ commanded us to share it with all people (the Great Commission). See "The Way of the Master" for gentle & effective ways to share the Gospel.
@huguenot67 I appreciate your enthusiasm and what may be the best of intentions. The problem I have is that when people start saying.."THEY need to..", ..."THEY should..",..THEY must..." it usually ends up with an accuser claiming that someone is not a Christian and therefore a target. Be careful that you do not become exactly what you condemned in an earlier post.
@JTB1956 Scripture says that we should examine ourselves daily to see if we are in the faith. We are to examine ourselves in light of God's word. The need to hear the Gospel is not limited to any "they" for we all need to hear it.
@huguenot67 So, do you go to Catholic Churches to tell these folks that they are wrong? Or is it mostly online/youtube etc? I have witnessed to the unchurched before but I have no experience in telling others that their Christianity isn't up to my standard. Can you be spiritually limber enough to deal with sincere Christian people who just don't agree with what you believe?
@JTB1956 It's not whether they disagree with me, but rather whether they disagree with what is written in God's word. Scripture says that we ought not to be ashamed of the Gospel lest our Lord be ashamed of us before His Father. If by "spiritually limber" you mean ignoring or bending Scripture in whole or in part, the answer is no.
There was this "champion" Bosrangdi Baci, a yenissary warrior who intimidated christians to have a duel . He called anyone to fight against him every day at noon.
Ever consider all faiths an apostacy accept mormonism? Since The Latter Day Saints consider themselves a church of the restoration.. Since all broke off faiths broke from rome, the rest are not true.
Reformation- fanatism of antisemite called Martin Luther who stood against the reason and replaiced it by blind faith, literal interpretation of bible and puritanism..
@SauroniastyPL I have not a blind faith. My faith is in Christ Alone! And I consider my self a Puritan! Do you know what the meaning of a Puritan is? It means that we advocate the teaching of pure biblical doctrine that is considered "sound".
The Reformation inaugurated the modern world, read Thomas Muntzer, the German Peasants' Rebellion pre-dated the French and Russian Revolutions in setting Europe alight with a utopian vision!
I'm Orthodox Christian and I want to say a thing, for both roman catholics and protestants
Rome since have been separated by the Orthodoxy of Faith entered in many errors, the Reformation was just an answer for abuses
I do not aprove Protestantism, Luther do great things, but his followers and other reformators made strong mistakes... I understand Luther and his side...
I just want to say that, my friends, try t study more and more the roots of Christian Faith, the Orthodoxy of the Faith...
@Loiginer The Reformed Faith is the True Apostolic Faith! The Institutes of the Christian Religion are nothing but an exposition of the Apostles Creed and Calvin shows that his doctrines are not new but held from the beginning of the Church and through his time!
Read about God's work in Europe during the Reformation by His wretched servant John Calvin.
@NB3K Just wandering. Why do you call Calvin wretched after you say that he carried the belief of the early church? If it's not what I think, Are you a calvinist?!
@petterdiesel We all are wretches, all because Calvin was the man God used to be the Protestant Teacher does not take away the fact that Calvin also was a man in need of grace.
@petterdiesel No I am reading through his Institutes and I have almost all of his Sermons that are in print, I have read the Secret Providence of God, The Treatise on the Eternal Predestination of God, Truth for all time, The golden booklet of the true christian life, and along with his commentaries, I have to admit Calvin stayed as close and true to Sola Scriptura as a justified sinner could. Calvin is our "Protestant's" Augustine!
@nightwish1000 Yes I understand that, I have Luther's commentary on Romans and Luther is what brought me to believe in the doctrine of Limited Atonement, it's ironic that Luther and Calvin were as one on the Doctrines of Grace.
I like Augustine too. Actually, I would say, if one wants three good teachers, these three would be my pick for everyone to follow because they are the greatest and they are
@Loiginer We must stop the Negative and keep it simple.. Hail the King of Kings! there is only one who lurks in the shadows of ALL of our souls breeding contempt and hate. Simple.. Believe in him and you will be saved. Catholic or protestant. all the chruches separation is not of God.
@Loiginer I do not agree with the theological tenets of Catholicism either, but I have problems with the interpretation of the Orthodox Church in various issues, specially when it comes to relics and icons. For me, the difference between proskynesis and latria is pure sophistry; the Scripture is clear about that( Ex. 20:4; John 4:24).( Between veneration and adoration). I know what St. John Damascene and Stephan the Younger said but the Word of God comes first.
Brother, I think that you must understand this not as an doctrine, but as part of historical Christianity, we do not teach what Jesus say, we do what He did.
We just not just preach, we do.
When I say this, I just try to say that this things can just be understand in the practical way.
Look, venerate something is recognize that God is with us, that He sanctify this things.
Martin Luther was so amazing! Some very serious truth to earthly power! Too many of the genocides of the early protestants have been forgotten--- their enemies have had a hand in attempting to secularize their faith again. Vatican II was a DISASTER for American protetantism. Ironically, catholics are told it liberalized THEIR faith, lol!!! How do you get more liberalizing & worldly than the red shoes, the slaughters of Innocent III and so on? Oh dear!
1. Warownym grodem jest nasz Bóg - Orężem nam i zbroją. Wybawia nas od wszelkich trwóg - Co nas tu niepokoją! Stary, chytry wróg - Czyha, by nas zmógł; Swych mocy złych rój - Prowadzi na nas w bój, Na ziemi któż mu sprosta? 2. My złego nie zdołamy zmóc - Nam zginąć wnet by trzeba; Lecz walczy za nas chrobry Wódz - Anielskich hufców z nieba. Kto On? - pytasz się - Jezus On się zwie, To Chrystus, nasz Pan - Szatański zburzy plan, Innego nie masz Boga.
@seth5220 The good works of Christians are but indicators of the SAVING FAITH which Christ has given -- while the GOOD WORK of CHRIST IS EVERYTHING HE HAS DONE FOR OUR SALVATION, including the Faith He gives through His Word & Sacraments of the Gospel! :)
Thank God for Sts. Martin & Katherine Luther, for the Holy Lutheran Reformers, and for the Orthodox Catholic Protestant Lutheran Christian Reformation --
@USAsoldier1955 Katherine Luther, maiden name Von Bora. Talk about odd matches. Nuns fleeing from a nunnery in a beer cart! LOL. Not making fun, just saying it is funny.
@ARP7777777 Yes, Kate wanted to marry Martin -- no one else would do. The beer cart escape from the convent was a fond memory for two decades of their happy Christian marriage! :)
I Timothy 5:12-"Having damnation, because they have cast off thier first faith."..in spite of feminine leadership-muslim migration-roman doctrine-and apostate education:God still rose from the dead-bodily-as Jesus Christ..
I enjoy this hymn every time I hear it. Even though I am Catholic I enjoyed watching Davy and Goliath as a child. Even now at 50 I like to watch the show. It doesn't matter if your Baptist, Catholic, Lutheran etc. All that matters is are you on Christ's side.
@jfe60 And it is indeed a Catholic hymn as well. It is a part of the hymnal book of the Catholic diocese of Stockholm. I would not say it is a battle hymn of the reformation as it should be interpreted today.
I think this is such a powerful, celestial song. Odd as it may seem, we sang it at my all boy"s Catholic School. I suppose we were ecumenical before it was acceptable. When I was at seminary, the Jesuits had a mean, cantankerous old house cat. He was an ancient tom, and had wandered in from the streets. He simply took over. He was copper red, with very long whiskers, a curved, bushy tail shaped like a scimitar and look that would freeze a glass of beer. The Jesuits named him Luther.
@USAsoldier1955 To your statement I only can say = So it ist - not other ! Read my commentaries to FlgOff044038 ! Only (inside) the bible is the correct message - but there is a power, which is fighting against God and want to seduce and deceive people every day ! to separate from God ! To bring into spoil ! Satan only fights against those people, he has not in his wrong area. For the spiritual dead people he had not longer to fight, because those are his property !
@FlgOff044038 I think, there is a mistake ? The Orthodox Church is teaching essential the same doctrine as the Chatholic Church - only a few special doctrines they want not accept, so especially such of infallibility and the spirit of Aristoteles aso. All churches worldwide respect not all 10 Commandments of the bible, an elementar problem against God.Nearly all churches believe evolution instead creation. But the bible speaks no word about evolution, but only from God as the Creator
@LeuchtturmD 1) Hi, I think on your side is the same mistake of thinking of most people ! Not GOD ist the pronlem, but by the people! Since Adam + Eve God has given the real message to the people and telled them which is the only exist Go and in which way he want worship. And already since the 2. generation (with Kain + Abel) the mankind were going in opposite to God, away from his given very clear commandments. And more and more until today the mankind were building own philosophias > 2
@LeuchtturmD > 2 and WRONG own religions and worships to not existing Gods. The bible is the only and oldest persuasive message of a real God ! All other doctrine are wrong and are coming from people and wrong leaders, wrong prophets ! I have proffed all religions on the world, I know what I say - and I was and I'm beeing the most critical person on world, but I have proofed the worlwide supermarket of religions since a long time. And if you cannot beliefe that, than 3)
@LeuchtturmD 3) > here my invitation = Please study attentive the prophetic books and writings of the bible. All the many announcements since thousands of years until today were fullfilled. And the little rest is developing in our epoche and our eyes ! The long, long history since Adam + Eve until today is the most uncorruptible witness for this!
The written messages in the bible are clear not writen from God himself, but the messages were given from him to people as his inspired words!
'The Reformation was "a devastation of England, which was at the time when this event took place, the happiest country, perhaps, that the world had ever seen; but afterwards marched on plundering, devastating, and inflicting torments on the people, and shedding their innocent blood; abbeys, priories, nunneries, hospitals and other religious foundations were confiscated by the Reformers and Jews, who brought to England the misery of pauperism "
The bible and the history shows absolutely clear the roman church is the spiritual Babylon!
The Archbishop ! of Salzburg-Austria realized it as a member of this system 1260,all the reformers inthe middleage too! The oecumenic-movement real plays only the role to get all churches+religions again under the jurisdictionsprimat of the papism!
And the official and mainly protestantic churches too. That the goal. The oecum. is all other, only not biblical spirit, is a political earthly Trojanic Horse!
In the hearts of many the reformation still burns strong! We reject the papist deceits, the apostasy of the modern evangelicals, the whiles of ecuminism and the judiasing of the dispensationalists and pentecostals. God perfect and Triune rules from his throne and His scripture alone feeds his sheep and directs our path. Faith alone thru grace alone. Luther was a great man and the lies of the historical revisionists will never tarnish his name in the light of eternity. Even so come Lord Jesus.
@Anaksbane2 Jesus and the first Christians didn't have Bibles. It was the institutional church which eventually collected and approved books of Scripture AS the Bible. Clearly, "authority" for early Christians did not emanate solely from a book or "the Bible". Or would you say that God was not with His church, and His church lacked authority UNTIL the Bible appeared? Scripture, sacred tradition, and sacred custom were the three "legs" that Christians stood on, until the Reformation.
@lichtbroeder You are incorrect. We did have scripture. Jesus always quoted saying "It is written" .. Paul backs up his teachings by saying " As it is written".. In the book of Acts Paul praises the group of Bereans for reading their scriptures. We did not have all the books put together in a whole, but we did have scripture. About "Oral Tradition", I agree with tradition, but when tradition starts to contradict the Bible, then thats a different story.
@lichtbroeder You are wrong, the very first christians were all Jews and they had the 39 books of the old testament in the local synagogue. Within the lifetimes of the apostles the whole church both jew and Gentile had all the scriptures as the epistles were distributed from church to church. Shortly after 100 a.d. the bible was complete. The Romish whore of babylon false church did not arise until the fourth century and did not completely pervert itself until the fifth century.
The title of this entry, by its author is "Battle Hymn of the Reformation" & that occured 500 yrs ago and my prayer would be that we look for commonalities and not differences. Extremism in any religion, including Christianity, is an evil, as is the politicizing of religion. I am an Anglican and see God, as God no matter what religion or denomination. The "Battle" here took tens of thousands of lives, on both parts and is something to be ashamed of, not glorify. I think JC would agree, Peace!
There has been much more German contribution to mankind than just the Austrian Adolf Hitler. Martin Luther and his bravery stand as an example for western culture and freedom.
This >Battle Hymn of the Reformation< and Luther as its text writer and source of inspiration may never be forgotten.
The Reformation paved the way for modernism and the benefits we enjoy today. It made our world possible. This is also a beautiful and inspiring hymn. It reminds me why I converted to Protestantism and went to Yale Divinity School.
Why do you think that Luther's reformation was incomplete? Of course it was. Luther firmly said to his time people that they should trust Jesus Christ unconditionally! That is the bottom line of God's will, unfortunately often forgotten nowadays, even among some evangelical christians.
This Roman Catholic guy loves this hymn! I had it played at my father's funeral. He was Protestant by birth; became Roman Catholic. I visited Lutherstadt Wittenberg several years ago. Went to the Schlosskirche where Luther posted his 95 thesis. Peace!
A vibrant and faith inspiring song a call to saints down and through the ages to fix their faith and hope on heavenly promises and things to be revealed at the appointed time..
Enlightenment... reform... the triumph of reason over superstition... We could learn a lesson from the Reformation today, with all the filthy crimes of the Catholic priesthood being exposed.
@jupitermoon10011 I am Catholic. First off, this song is obviously amazing. Secondly, please do not allow the indignant priests which the media decides to expose put a poor tint upon the rest of the Catholic faith and people at large. We can all learn from one another.
@nealmcalister OK, you have a good point. But in your faith, the Catholic faith, the Priests ARE the church, no? Protestants believe the people are the church, and we don't require priests to intervene on our behalf when we pray to God. That's the issue I have- too much power in the hands of priests. Otherwise, as Christians, we can all agree on many things :-)
@jupitermoon10011 Actually, that is one of the many popular false rumors about the Catholic church. The Priests are the primary teachers of the faith, but the laypeople (congregation) is the body that comprises the major population of the church. Where would a Priest be without his Parishioners? Catholics don't require a priest to intercede for us to God either, but enjoy the same closeness with Christ as a Protestant. So, the difference really lies in perspective. We are not so different.
@nealmcalister I'd like to believe that we're not so different. I'd like to see the Catholic church allow priests to marry and ordain women priests. And the threat of making Mary "co-redemptrix" with Christ is a bit scary... I'm Anglican (Episcopalian) and as you probably know, our liturgy is practically identical so in that regard I feel a close affinity with the Catholic church.
@jupitermoon10011 It's so providential that you're Anglican! I'm a cradle Episcopalian myself, and just converted last Easter. There are a lot of dichotomies in regard to the two churches' Theological teachings, but I researched the foundations of the questions I had of the Catholic church for years (my conversion probably started about six years ago). Now I go to an Anglo-Catholic Church which uses the Book of Divine Worship (which was derived from the BCP). Contact me at my User ID @gmail.com.
@nealmcalister Thank you Nealmcalister, in Christ though we are different parts, but of the same body. We must tolerate our differences and our different angles and perspectives and work together as one healthy body, and keep Jesus Christ in our hearts regardless if or how we worship, and keep Jesus / God the head
@jupitermoon10011 For Catholics, the center of faith is the Mass. It isn't just a "memorial". It's seen as being one and the same with Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. It isn't an 'additional" sacrifice or a different one - it is spiritually united with the original. We pray to God directly, like anyone, but in a liturgical context, priests act AS a priests and intercessors, and have since the early church.
@jupitermoon10011 You asked someone if Catholics didn't see their priest as being "the church". We don't. We respect their "office" despite the faults of some. The "church" consists of all faithful on earth, and all who are in heaven. A cardinal once complained to Pope John XXIII that he didn't like increased the involvement of the laity in the church that came about after the Vatican Councils. The pope replied, "Well, we'd look pretty silly without them!"
@jupitermoon10011 You bash Catholics and speak of "reason over superstition"? Luther said that "Reason and intellect were enemies of faith that must be utterly crushed." This is "reason"? For centuries, the Real Presence, veneration (not worship) of Mary and the saints, 7 sacraments, etc. had been explained with Scripture. Reformers went against the teachings of ancient church fathers and saints, and changed all that. Was reform necessary? yes. But you threw the baby out with the bath water.
@jupitermoon10011 p.s. - I came to this video because I love this hymn. I'm Catholic, and am sorry that you felt the need to gleefully judge my church by the actions of a few priests. There are bad Protestant pastors too, yet good endures despite them. You may not like Catholicism, but it was the faith of your ancestors at one time, a faith that they lived by, and in some instances, died for.
@lichtbroeder I have heard many Catholics misquote Luther. Please give out the source of the quotation. What about the doctrine of the Vulneration of the Virgin Mary? Or the discussion of Purgatory. I have seen a lot of Catholics Apologist struggle with these issue and have to bring the authority of the church ( Robert Sungensis VS James White 2010 Debate).... What is the difference between "dulia", "hyper-dulia", and "latria".?Tell me what is it that you do differently on each of them.
Reason is the Devil's greatest whore; by nature and manner of being she is a noxious whore; she is a prostitute, the Devil's appointed whore; whore eaten by scab and leprosy who ought to be trodden under foot and destroyed, she and her wisdom ... Throw dung in her face to make her ugly. She is and she ought to be drowned in baptism... She would deserve, the wretch, to be banished to the filthiest place in the house, to the closets.
Martin Luther, Erlangen Edition v. 16, pp. 142-148
@lichtbroeder < another scribers question was, "why in Germany and many other countries the people are so wide away from the reformation spirit" The answer we all can simple find for our (end)-times in Rev. Chapt. 3, verse 14-17 ! Jesus gives the urgent advice in verse 18-22 ! Jesus saw the future ot his church and today we can observe the facts. The Jesuits have done "very good her job" of contra-reformation incl. her theology of historic-critical-doctrine = poison for the belief at God.
People gave ear to an upstart astrologer [Copernicus] who strove to show that the earth revolves, not the heavens or the firmament, the sun and the moon. Whoever wishes to appear clever must devise some new system, which of all systems is of course the very best. This fool wishes to reverse the entire science of astronomy; but sacred scripture tells us [Joshua 10:13] that Joshua commanded the sun to stand still, and not the earth.
@johnpolanco18 I did find one quote in which Luther says that reason can be an asset to faith if properly used. Given his other comments on the matter, I can imagine what "properly" means.
@jupitermoon10011 I agree the Catholic church has a lot to answer for in the Ivory Tower, but don't throw the baby out with the bath water...just yet : ) as their are many good spirit filled Catholics out their.....
Something about the weeds and the harvest growing together in Matthew comes to mind.
@mindsprawl I can underwrite you, worldwide are people in all churches, chatholics, too, which are goodwilling
and daithful. But it is to distinguish between single but, wrong understanding people and a willful religious-political system, which presents since his existence doctrins against God and fakes it ! Archbishop of Salzburg, (member of this system ! ) already 1260 realized, the Pope as antichrist ! All the Reformators too. More actually then ever. In the meantime all forgotten ?
@jupitermoon10011 Baloney. Plenty of Protestant scandals are in the news too; pastors who cheat on their wives, have sex with men, steal money from their churches, and wear expensive clothes and drive around in luxury cars for starters. Luther said that "reason and intellect were enemies of faith, to be crushed", and you speak of "reason". Try living your faith so that it stands FOR something. An "anti" faith that can't stand on its own without bashing others is no faith at all.
@jupitermoon10011 Uhm. Enlightenment is way later than the reformation. But yes, lets hail the enlightenment as a crusher of superstition, and the reformation as the baby steps that led us there.
@DimmDevil Thanks for injecting a bit of historical context. They essentially were saying Paul Revere warned us the Japanese were coming to bomb Pearl Harbor.
It would help if the English lyrics are provided in this video. By the way , why is it that German-Americans in Iowa , Illinois , Nebraska , Wisconsin, etc. are still loyal to the Lutheran faith , while those in Germany have very little religious feelings ??
It isn't just the Germans. My mother's family is Norwegian-American and the majority have remained Lutherans. I lived in Germany for three years, but since it was in Bavaria I can't speak to the the EKD there.
rexlibris99 - I was raised in Emporia, many of my immigrant people settled in Colby. By the way, I've always thought Lawrence is the prettiest town in Kansas, & my son went to University there.
rexlibris99 - Ha - ha ! Good ol' IBP ! Since that place opened in, '69 or so, it's been the scourge of Emporia. The stink was awful, on some days it was over the whole town. Ahhh, precious memories. Some things never change.
@BraveMuslimSoldier49 I might have an answer, I'm German 1st generation immigrant, my people settled in Kansas. The church is a touchstone for those of us who love Germany and our German-ness. This song is a perfect example.
the point is that some regions in germany are mostly catholic like south bavaria, others like schleswig holstein are only lutheran, others especially in the east of germany are non-religious because of the long GDR time where the church wasn't "loved" by the government
@BraveMuslimSoldier49 I can't answer that with any positive response. I only know that we (Family) have been faithful Lutherans since the first one arrived in 1854. Perhaps it has to due with World War II. Guess it would take someone in Germany to explain.
@BraveMuslimSoldier49 1) Hello, just I read this. Reason a) = In the western countries always the atheism and evolution is trong growing since 250 years = b) the Contra Reformation (Loyola) and the Jesuits have done very "good" work c) the protestantic leaders therefore are back on the way to Rome ! Not only in Germany the reformation is carried to grave. The Reformation is over, Rome is triumphing. The Protestantism has given up all - but Rome not one wrong thesis !
@BraveMuslimSoldier49 2) Luther and other Reformators of his time too - would turn around in his own grave and come out to nail his thesis at the door of the church on Wittenbergs castle if they could see it As in the prophetic books (Daniel + Revelation) of the bible described since long time this development. Now it happens! And the USA shall play a mainly rule at the end of our times together with Rome.
@BraveMuslimSoldier49 3) Luther today would nail today his thesis not for the "Romans", but this time for his own protestantic leaders ! The theological and spiritual doctrine and point of view of the most of it is a disaster for Gofd and people ! But all this is to read very clear in the bible! Unfortunately the most Christians have no more knowledge about this important things! We can see every day the developments of endtime! Interested to get more informations ? Than write, Bye, bye
@LeuchtturmD Any religion that demands giving up thought and reason for blind belief in a book written by men, edited by men, translated by men, re-written by men, and put forth as the Word of God is not a religion to make the world a better place. Christians have been screaming "endtime" for centuries. Prayers to Egyptian gods, Chinese gods, Indian gods, the Moslem god, the Jewish god, the Mayan gods, and all the books "written" by those gods seems to have very little to do with the real world.
A Catholic deduction might go something like this. God is unchangeable, and Jesus is the only way to redemption. Therefore anyone who doesn't accept Jesus will not be redeemed.
That's not a sweeping generalization if you accept the premises. If God could change his mind, the conclusion does not follow. If Jesus wasn't the only way, the conclusion would not follow. If you made the conclusion in spite of one of the premises being undermined, then that would be a generalization fallacy.
Im not an expert on Luther, but If you think loneliness was the sole motivator behind John Calvin, all I can say is you dont know anything about Calvinism.
Calvinism is so different than Catholicism, I dont even know where to start.
>Calvinistic predestinarianism is way too anal for me,".
And you think most Calvinists are going to give up the doctrine of predestination, just so they can be married Catholics, when they can already be married protestants? You make no sense.
I don't want to debate the merits of Catholicism versus Protestantism, but for the sake of argument let's assume that the Catholic Church is the true continuation of Judaism. There is no evidence that the current so called heretics claiming to be Jews are about to convert to any sort of Christianity. It then stands to reason that the protestant heretics claiming to be Christian, will not convert for one subtle change in the Church.
This is why most protestant denominations can accept other protestants as misguided true believers and Catholics are thought of as fundamentally heathen. I know of no protestant who opposes vows of celibacy by the clergy. The only difference is that protestants think its unnecessary.
>authority comes from priests. Protestant authority comes from teachers chosen congregationally as representatives of family heads
This is the funniest thing you've said, so far. To analogize, you basically have contrasted the Catholic Church with Protestantism, as Despotism versus Democracy. And these religious democrats supposedly can't wait to get back to despotic Rome? HA!
It is compared to the other differences between the two. Protestants consider it blasphemy to pray to Mary or the Saints, and to confess sins to a human priest. In otherwords, the priesthood of all believers is the irreparable theological fault line that stands between protestants Catholics. (continued)
@damienvargas ....FYI: The Lutheran Confessional Symbols CONDEMN prayer to the Angels & Departed Saints. Hence, anyone doing this is no longer a Lutheran. Of course, you can find Papists who do and believe things contrary to what Rome commands....in fact, they are the MAJORITY of the RC Church!

Could you please identify the saints who were drawn or painted in this video?

The Church of Rome is the greatest persecutor of Christians in history. Diocletian pales by comparison.

Our friends in the Church of Rome need to hear the Scripture. Christ commanded us to share it with all people (the Great Commission). See "The Way of the Master" for gentle & effective ways to share the Gospel.
huguenot67 1 month ago
@huguenot67 I appreciate your enthusiasm and what may be the best of intentions. The problem I have is that when people start saying.."THEY need to..", ..."THEY should..",..THEY must..." it usually ends up with an accuser claiming that someone is not a Christian and therefore a target. Be careful that you do not become exactly what you condemned in an earlier post.
JTB1956 1 month ago
@JTB1956 Scripture says that we should examine ourselves daily to see if we are in the faith. We are to examine ourselves in light of God's word. The need to hear the Gospel is not limited to any "they" for we all need to hear it.
huguenot67 1 month ago
@huguenot67 So, do you go to Catholic Churches to tell these folks that they are wrong? Or is it mostly online/youtube etc? I have witnessed to the unchurched before but I have no experience in telling others that their Christianity isn't up to my standard. Can you be spiritually limber enough to deal with sincere Christian people who just don't agree with what you believe?
JTB1956 1 month ago
@JTB1956 It's not whether they disagree with me, but rather whether they disagree with what is written in God's word. Scripture says that we ought not to be ashamed of the Gospel lest our Lord be ashamed of us before His Father. If by "spiritually limber" you mean ignoring or bending Scripture in whole or in part, the answer is no.
huguenot67 1 month ago
@huguenot67 That's good boilerplate. How do you tell these folks that they are wrong...and by extension that you are right?

Too many of the genocides of the early protestants have been forgotten--- their enemies have had a hand in attempting to secularize their faith again.

@FlgOff044038 I think, there is a mistake ? The Orthodox Church is teaching essential the same doctrine as the Chatholic Church - only a few special doctrines they want not accept, so especially such of infallibility and the spirit of Aristoteles aso.
-William Cobbett, Protestant Author, 1763-1834

The bible and the history shows absolutely clear the roman church is the spiritual Babylon!
The Archbishop ! of Salzburg-Austria realized it as a member of this system 1260,all the reformers inthe middleage too! The oecumenic-movement real plays only the role to get all churches+religions again under the jurisdictionsprimat of the papism!
And the official and mainly protestantic churches too. That the goal. The oecum. is all other, only not biblical spirit, is a political earthly Trojanic Horse!
LeuchtturmD 1 year ago
In the hearts of many the reformation still burns strong! We reject the papist deceits, the apostasy of the modern evangelicals, the whiles of ecuminism and the judiasing of the dispensationalists and pentecostals. God perfect and Triune rules from his throne and His scripture alone feeds his sheep and directs our path. Faith alone thru grace alone. Luther was a great man and the lies of the historical revisionists will never tarnish his name in the light of eternity. Even so come Lord Jesus.
Anaksbane2 1 year ago
@Anaksbane2 Jesus and the first Christians didn't have Bibles. It was the institutional church which eventually collected and approved books of Scripture AS the Bible. Clearly, "authority" for early Christians did not emanate solely from a book or "the Bible". Or would you say that God was not with His church, and His church lacked authority UNTIL the Bible appeared? Scripture, sacred tradition, and sacred custom were the three "legs" that Christians stood on, until the Reformation.
lichtbroeder 1 year ago
@lichtbroeder You are incorrect. We did have scripture. Jesus always quoted saying "It is written" .. Paul backs up his teachings by saying " As it is written".. In the book of Acts Paul praises the group of Bereans for reading their scriptures. We did not have all the books put together in a whole, but we did have scripture. About "Oral Tradition", I agree with tradition, but when tradition starts to contradict the Bible, then thats a different story.
johnpolanco18 1 year ago
@lichtbroeder You are wrong, the very first christians were all Jews and they had the 39 books of the old testament in the local synagogue. Within the lifetimes of the apostles the whole church both jew and Gentile had all the scriptures as the epistles were distributed from church to church. Shortly after 100 a.d. the bible was complete. The Romish whore of babylon false church did not arise until the fourth century and did not completely pervert itself until the fifth century.

nealmcalister 1 year ago
@nealmcalister OK, you have a good point. But in your faith, the Catholic faith, the Priests ARE the church, no? Protestants believe the people are the church, and we don't require priests to intervene on our behalf when we pray to God. That's the issue I have- too much power in the hands of priests. Otherwise, as Christians, we can all agree on many things :-)
jupitermoon10011 1 year ago
@jupitermoon10011 Actually, that is one of the many popular false rumors about the Catholic church. The Priests are the primary teachers of the faith, but the laypeople (congregation) is the body that comprises the major population of the church. Where would a Priest be without his Parishioners? Catholics don't require a priest to intercede for us to God either, but enjoy the same closeness with Christ as a Protestant. So, the difference really lies in perspective. We are not so different.
nealmcalister 1 year ago
@nealmcalister I'd like to believe that we're not so different. I'd like to see the Catholic church allow priests to marry and ordain women priests. And the threat of making Mary "co-redemptrix" with Christ is a bit scary... I'm Anglican (Episcopalian) and as you probably know, our liturgy is practically identical so in that regard I feel a close affinity with the Catholic church.
jupitermoon10011 1 year ago

We must tolerate our differences and our different angles and perspectives and work together as one healthy body, and keep Jesus Christ in our hearts regardless if or how we worship, and keep Jesus / God the head
mtlicq 1 year ago
@jupitermoon10011 For Catholics, the center of faith is the Mass. It isn't just a "memorial". It's seen as being one and the same with Jesus' sacrifice on the cross. It isn't an 'additional" sacrifice or a different one - it is spiritually united with the original. We pray to God directly, like anyone, but in a liturgical context, priests act AS a priests and intercessors, and have since the early church.
lichtbroeder 1 year ago
@jupitermoon10011 You asked someone if Catholics didn't see their priest as being "the church". We don't. We respect their "office" despite the faults of some. The "church" consists of all faithful on earth, and all who are in heaven. A cardinal once complained to Pope John XXIII that he didn't like increased the involvement of the laity in the church that came about after the Vatican Councils. The pope replied, "Well, we'd look pretty silly without them!"
lichtbroeder 1 year ago
@jupitermoon10011 You bash Catholics and speak of "reason over superstition"? Luther said that "Reason and intellect were enemies of faith that must be utterly crushed." This is "reason"? For centuries, the Real Presence, veneration (not worship) of Mary and the saints, 7 sacraments, etc. had been explained with Scripture. Reformers went against the teachings of ancient church fathers and saints, and changed all that. Was reform necessary? yes. But you threw the baby out with the bath water.
lichtbroeder 1 year ago
@jupitermoon10011 p.s. - I came to this video because I love this hymn. I'm Catholic, and am sorry that you felt the need to gleefully judge my church by the actions of a few priests. There are bad Protestant pastors too, yet good endures despite them. You may not like Catholicism, but it was the faith of your ancestors at one time, a faith that they lived by, and in some instances, died for.
lichtbroeder 1 year ago
@lichtbroeder I have heard many Catholics misquote Luther. Please give out the source of the quotation. What about the doctrine of the Vulneration of the Virgin Mary? Or the discussion of Purgatory. I have seen a lot of Catholics Apologist struggle with these issue and have to bring the authority of the church ( Robert Sungensis VS James White 2010 Debate).... What is the difference between "dulia", "hyper-dulia", and "latria".?Tell me what is it that you do differently on each of them.

@lichtbroeder < another scribers question was, "why in Germany and many other countries the people are so wide away from the reformation spirit" The answer we all can simple find for our (end)-times in Rev.

I went to KU myself so you obviously have a smart son. I also went to Emporia for grad school which was fine except for IBP.

rexlibris99 - Ha - ha !

This song is a perfect example.
sprygeoffreya17 1 year ago
What part of Kansas? My family is in Lawrence.

@sprygeoffreya17
yeah and because German Society is very leftist

@BraveMuslimSoldier49 in fact thats not right !
the point is that some regions in germany are mostly catholic like south bavaria, others like schleswig holstein are only lutheran, others especially in the east of germany are non-religious because of the long GDR time where the church wasn't "loved" by the government
PG1090 1 year ago
@BraveMuslimSoldier49 The People in Germany have a government run church. We all know what happens when the government runs things.

@BraveMuslimSoldier49 I'd think that something happened in Germany that didn't happen here.

@BraveMuslimSoldier49 I can't answer that with any positive response. I only know that we (Family) have been faithful Lutherans since the first one arrived in 1854. Perhaps it has to due with World War II. Guess it would take someone in Germany to explain.

@BraveMuslimSoldier49 Why don't they speak German if they were Germans? Luther has to be understood in German language.

LeuchtturmD 1 year ago
@BraveMuslimSoldier49 2) Luther and other Reformators of his time too - would turn around in his own grave and come out to nail his thesis at the door of the church on Wittenbergs castle if they could see it As in the prophetic books (Daniel + Revelation) of the bible described since long time this development. Now it happens! And the USA shall play a mainly rule at the end of our times together with Rome.
LeuchtturmD 1 year ago

@damienvargas

HA!

@damienvargas

@damienvargas
if married clergy were allowed by Trent, England would return.
Maybe. Maybe not. But you must not confuse Anglicanism for Protestantism
Today's Protestant ministers would love the Catholic priestly powers and legitimacy.
This is patently absurd, because most protestant ministers consider Catholic priestly powers blasphemous.
