I always wonder when people learn several languages do they do a translation in their head from one to other first. For example see apple, think apple, think of translated word for apple, say translated word or does the image go straight to say translated word. Personally I would love to speak other languages, I've just never been very good at it and at 44, I doubt I'd have any hope now. I am genuinely jealous of those that can.
A huge goal in my life is to learn as many languages as I can. Then, when I have children, teach them different languages as they grow up. They may not retain everything, but it'll be a huge stepping stone when they're older :)
@Rikiya21 Start learning yourself a language and practice with him... It will increase the bond between you and your son and you both will learn another language!
Children who have 1 parent (or both) speaking different languages will learn not only the languages, but also the culture of their parents! The boy’s first language is probably Portuguese, but TV is in English, most play dates are in English, other family/friends/neighbors do speak in English! So they’re in contact with both languages simultaneously! Researches show that if a child is immersed in several languages since very early age (and keep it) they’ll function in those languages effortless.
this is wonderful! im not fluent in spanish but i want to teach my baby spanish as much as i know! she should be able to speak to her family on my side just like she can speak to everyone who speaks english :)
O love the way hi speaks but I didn't understand very much what he said in portuguese, maybe just because he lives in America. I have known children who could speak 4 different language and they switch from one to another without a blink. Amazing!!
I used to babysit a 3yo boy and 5yo girl who had a Russian dad and French Canadian mom, so they were fluent in English, Russian and French. It made me feel stupid when they switched back and forth between languages and I couldn't understand anything they were saying. xD I really hope that my future babies' daddy is bilingual so he can speak another language to them...it's such a huge advantage to grow up speaking more than one language like that!
Some of the Portuguese words resemble Spanish words. I think I'm going to start taking portuguese. :) & being bilingual is not something uncommon, you just need practice. I think he is a smart little boy and is only going to get smarter.
I speak english and German, and I speak both to my baby son. I hope he will retain the language when he gets older. I'm only 18 and the parenting thing is new to me, so I'm hoping I'm doing right by speaking both languages to him.
@Aresolar690 You are doing it so right! Keep on... His brain connections are developing in a bebeficial mode, and all the research confirms this. Speaking more than a language is a big advantage and now we know it delays for many years the development some diseases like alzheimer's. Much research is on the way, in fact the majority of world population is bilingual.
@hop208 Thanks for the post. But not at all, it was just a no cut home video and sometimes the intonation in one language differs from another. But I´ll try to sound softer with my next interviews.
@hop208 english is a way easier than portuguese... I spend my hole life studing and talking portuguese and I still dont know all the rules.. Learn english took me 4 months to comunicate with my co-workers and friends with no problems.. my cousin only speaks english even with his parents, and he was also educated in brazil until 7!
My first two boys grew up speaking both English and Spanish. The third one understand most od Spanish, but unfortunately, once he started to go to school, he got "sandwiched" between an English speaking school system and his older brothers also speaking English. My wife did not supported me in teaching him the language, she loves to speak Spanglish. I wish I could teach them a third language, but I have no one to practice with. Perhaps they could get a Portuguese or Italian girlfriend...
@kpopper222 I agree. It's called code switching. It is far rarer for a bilingual person not to do it. The kid is cute but I would hardly call it amazing.

My kids can do this too. Not that special when they are exposed to it from birth. Awfully cute kid. He does need a wet wipe for his face though.
