'Slippin heck!' (as my 2yr old daughter might say), I love this concerto and pretty much adore the performer but, slippin heck; hearing her bum the tonic in the main theme has just made my day/year/lifetime! No aspersions cast, I promise - its just that knowing if such a perfect perfectionist can err, then prolly its ok if litle old me is as rubbish as litle old me can be wen attempting 2play all this magical music. Thank u wonderful Valentina! :)
Easily one of the most graceful pianists I have ever seen or heard. I place her in my top three female pianists behind (but not too far) Elena Kuschnerova and Martha Argerich. She is wonderful to watch and her playing is a thing of beauty.
Bellissimo questo concerto! Brava tutta l'orchestra e la pianistia....vi invito ad ascoltare lo stesso concerto diretto e suonato (piano) da grade Friedrich Gulda ; ).
I am not a sissy, but when i hear Beethoven i tear up a the beauty of the sound of greatness. Beethoven may have not been a born again Christian..but God spoke to the man.
It is said that Beethoven cut the legs from his piano and used the wooden floor as a sounding board so he could feel the music he was composing, and he came up with works like this, utterly and totally amazing and all this while stone deaf too, now that is pure genius.
Valentina plays with such tenderness and verve, but to me the real hallmark is her clarity. My first hearing of the concerto was on a CD by Mitsuko Uchida. But I never really understood the theme of the last movement until I heard Valentina play it, and you can distinguish every note. I've noticed in other pieces as well, she brings clarity to sections that other pianists just make into mud.
Although her technique ( both physical and sound ) is simply superb ( and with all my respect for that ) she sadly lacks (a bit) instinct to STRUCTURE music.
Just have a look at the best interpretation of Beethoven 5 i´ve EVER heard from Mr.
@HorstMariaSeitz why don't you relax and sit back and listen to Valentina's style of playing this concerto and accept it as an beautiful performance. surely, she hasn't loaded up her music for competition but for sharing.
OMG! Does anyone else LOVE it when Valentina "hops" to the rhythm of the music while she does that long trill around 5:59 ? That part is so funny and adorable! :D
Horrible!! She does not know how to play the Emperor Concerto. She treats it like another of her Lisztian finger exercise, displaying just technique. No original sense of musicianship; it's all token trite phrasings. There's a simple explanation. She doesn't read Napoleonic history, nor early Beethoven's Vienna. She is a charlatan.
@freeqwerqwer --wow so funny you can criticize such musicianship, and Valentina with passion that Beethoven would have admired. So freeqwerqwer are you a better musician than Valentina or are you the charlatan? Or maybe you need a vocabulary lesson.
When I was a child and played with my toys under my uncle's Steinway, I would imagine that a great giant was waltzing to this! Just lovely!!!!!!!!Thank you!
valentina i attend one of your recitals in mexico back in 2007, you played the beethoven's 3 and then the orchestra played korsakov.. please come again..
Rosas pata ti Federico
I can see how much fun she's having performing this part of the concerto. It's my favorite, too! Thanks for spreading joy with your masterful rendition of Beethoven's Emperor Concerto, Valentina!
Wow. Focused s e c c o scale playing and light hand in Beethoven . Now I realize her sound is right . Should not be the thick sound so many use . Maria Grinberg is the most fabulous pianist I have ever heard . So I am telling every one who cares about brilliant thinking living playing to check her out. Valentina L is enjoying a brilliant career . I enjoy her d v d' s immensely and hope to see her the next time she is in Miami or anywhere in Florida !
Brao. wolframg
This piece seems to be made for her. I thought it was a really thrilling performance. If she didn't look so womanly I would be suspiciious that she was injecting testosterone. Look at the passage 6':25'' to 6'32'' played with such 'virility' and it's perfect. On the other hand, what happened with her encore of 'La Campanella' which is on YouTube. I know it's not a competition but she is so far behind Kissin with that piece it's not true.
Look at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra website. Look on their calendar 13th, 14, 15th March 2009. Look at who is playing under the baton of conductor James Gaffigan and look at WHAT she is playing ! :)
@rationalistx Know your facts man!! Beethoven was death composing his nignth symphony, not this concerto. He wrote this when he was in his thirties, there were signs of hearing failure, dut not complete deathness. Still the man was brilliant at all ages..
@rationalistx Sorry but that's not true.. He was in his thirties when he composed this concerto, he was death at the end of his life, It was his ninth symphony that he didn't hear while composing it.. and the quartets for strings after that.. Rehearsing with him was a disaster because he didn't hear what he was doing...
This is incredible. Imagine watching Jacqueline Dupre at her best magically managing to "be a pianist" just once, perhaps it might have been rather like this - Valentina has a very conspicuous talent and appeal that appears only very occasionally in the history of performers.

There's great joy in Valentina's playing - She bounces and smiles as she feels it - That's wonderful to me.

Beethoven was totally deaf when he composed it.
