  • ahh cant stop playing this awesome song :D

  • sorry all your lyrics are wrong.

  • "I used to pray like god was listenin'

I used to make my parents proud

I was the glue that kept my friends together

Now they don't talk, and we don't go out"

Fuck, shit, this entire verse speaks to me more than anything or anyone has spoken to me in ages.

  • the millstone around my neck means a heavy burden. prettty sure.

  • why does this remind me of baseball

i do not even like baseball

  • @ashleymothatrucker Fuck you, now I can't stop imagining baseball after your comment when listen to this WHAT THE FUCK

  • @Fanchus

    I AM SORRY OK

  • @ashleymothatrucker Don't worry, I still love you

  • @Fanchus I love you queerly not dearly

  • "Now I've made this bed and I can't fall asleep in it." = Exactly how I feel.

  • I used to make "arrow in the knee" jokes but then i took an arrow to the knee

  • i feel for jesse lacey, its hard sometimes and you even wonder if God actually listens, or exists..

but now that im out of the dark ages in my life, i think He does.

  • It makes me wanna cry

  • This song is achingly beautiful and haunting in equal measure. Classic Brand New.

  • not to be a dick but isn't it milestone and not millstone? or have I been thinking the wrong word this whole time.

  • @Madie2007 it's millstone, it's a biblical thing.

  • @Madie2007 Yeah, it's millstone. A reference to Matt 18:6, Luke 17:2, Mark 9:42. It's kind of symbol of failure/shortcomings. A milestone on the other hand, is more representative of achievement, which wouldn't make much sense.

  • @Madie2007 i think it's "i'm my own stone around my neck"

  • @Madie2007 It sounds like he's saying milestone in the song, but millstone means "an inescapable responsibility," and "millstone around my neck" is an actual saying whereas "hang a milestone 'round my neck" doesn't mean anything, so I'm not sure.

  • @CarFox6 The line is "I'm my own stone around my neck." A reference to a Bible verse about how it would be better to have a millstone tied around your neck and cast into the sea than to lead an innocent person astray. :)

  • I've listened to this song 5 times in a row. lol

  • one time i got stung by a bee it stung like a bitch

  • if i had one wish its that i could sing like thiis dude right here

  • @kite781 they all get one aspect or another...but this one really hits home

  • I thank Jesse Lacey so much for this song. Whenever I'm having a shit day and NOTHING is going right for me, I listen to this song. Its lyrics lets me know that even the best of us feel like fuck-ups sometimes.

  • @BattlingPancake It's the COMMENT section were supposed to discuss things asswipe

  • @celtictiger222 Problem is, people aren't "discussing" anything. They're arguing and complaining. They need to shut up and just listen.

  • I used to pray like God was listening........That line stung like a bitch

  • @Byrnz222 I love to play this song with friends, I can always tell who it hit's hard on. Its great because the entire car goes silent. Real quickly.

  • un-der-rated *clap clap clapclapclap*

  • Every single brand new song I can relate to, is it because they are just chunkin' awesome or is my life really that messed up?

  • I used to pray like god was listenin'

I used to make my parents proud

    that cuts like a knife

  • How is it possible for one band to be so good?

  • hey guys, we're Somebody Houston, a little unknown band with some pretty cool tunes. help us gain another fan and take a listen to our stuff. support unsigned artists<3

  • Even though Brand New Or Jesse Will never see this I feel like putting it out there, I first started listening to Brand New when I was 12 and I've felt like they have personally grown up with me, I am now 17 turning 18 soon and this is the only band that i listen to all OF THERE SONGS! All of the songs are just so powerful and inspirational. i remember when Myspace would ask who your hero was I never knew who to put..... but now i know If i am ever asked my hero again it will be Brand New <33

  • I always thought it was "a millstone around my neck"... because, you know... the title...

  • IS THIS SERIOUSLY MILLSTONE? WHAT HAVE I BEEN LISTENINIG TO I NEED TO SEARCH DA LYRICS

  • @rebeccam2 There is an alternate version...

  • oh my lord.. lesse lacey is the most fucking gorgeous man i have ever seen... <3

  • @redroxy2010

In my opinion, "The Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me" is Jesse expressing his feelings (vocally) about his inadequacies as a man and what he feels about the fact that his dark overshadows his light (if you read into his lyrics), accompanied by a sonic equivalent. I believe that is why he opted to call the album, "The Devil And God..." rather than "God And The Devil...".

Except Welcome To Bangkok. I think everything about that song is based within a different concept.

  • nuts!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Story of my fucking life.

  • devil and god was just such a guilty record... so much of the lyrics are guilt guilt guilt.. makes me wonder what kind of trouble jesse has gotten himself into..

  • I hate being left speechless..

  • jesse lacey kicks fuckin ass

  • love this song.

  • The best song they have made! :D

  • i shared this shit on fb

  • Throw me that lifeline,

the ship of fools I'm on will sink.

  • 12 people are douch bags and should burn

  • <3 Lacey <3

  • This song makes me sad because it reminds me too much of my life.

  • i play this song every day! best song ever! <3

  • We will never be able to put an end to the disputes on Youtube comments, so look at it this way. The band/artist is doing something right. People are taking in the lyrics, and interpreting them differently. Whether it's wrong or right, it doesn't matter. They mean something to someone. Who are we to tell them they're wrong.

  • cause when people do hear of these guys it seems like its only Deja):

witch don't get me wrong a great cd!...but they have so much more to them and my personal opinion is there better work is there new stuff like this and Daisy...anyway I Love Brand New!!!!!

  • @LittleC1991 i coulnt get into Daisy :( maybe ill give it more time

  • @LittleC1991 atleast people DO hear these guys.

  • @LittleC1991

blergh, TDAG>Deja (oh so slightly)>Daisy. Daisy is so unfocused. I'm sure it's intentional but it doesn't make the product any better in my eyes.

  • @LittleC1991 what's a cd? 0.o

  • I'm kinda new to the Brand New but i absolutely love them! its been about a year i like there older stuff but the Devil And God Are Raging Inside Me is bye far my favorite album(: You Won't Know from Luca to Millstone AmAzInG!! the lyrics blow my mind Jesse is an awesome writer....Daisy is another GREAT album they have just really surprised me of how much they've matured in there sound instrumental and voice....but bye far this is my favorite album bye these guys seems like a underrated album:')

  • @LittleC1991 Wow, I think Deja Intendu was by far the best, I remember buying the Devil and God when it came out, I had to look everywhere to find it, and when I got it I wasn't quite as happy, it's good, but in a different way, thier new stuff is rubbish though:(

  • @eightycc

*Entendu. It's the past preterit of entendre, as in, "already heard." What BN meant then was a reflection of a scripture that reads, "there is no new thing under the sun;" the band meant that all music is nothing new, except that it has already been heard and played out before by other bands. Now, combine that with their name, and you get a constant search for progression in the wake of tragedy (ie. Guernica).

  • TAKE ME OUT TONIGHTTTTT

  • a wonderful song. truth be told, i don't see how anyone could dislike this track.

  • my life in lyric form.

  • Over rated? Hmm maybe I'm just not familiar with their work much... cux Brand New is not my genre at all. In Fact i typically hate this type... but this is a fantastic album. The only one by them I really care for. So many well written songs. Great to lay with your girlfriend and look into her eyes while listening to.

  • This is more than just a song people can break down... It's life in some way. People can say what they want, but this (and the whole cd for that matter) changed me forever...

  • made a video used the song "you wont know" the video is about drug abuse and the results of it

  • @MRTEED Overrated? By who?

  • Great song

  • Oh how I dream of visiting to one of their shows.. They need to go travel a little over U.S.

  • i can relate to a lot of what he says in this song.

  • This song describes Lebron's mood right now I believe.

  • @letsgopietch best comment ever. hah. =O)

  • great song!!

  • These lyrics literally explain my life. It's eery.

  • @dacedacer

    i don't give a fuck.

  • @VALObrand lmao

  • Abandoning God slowly tears us apart with remorse as we sink beneath the flood. This song gasps for breath as it thrashes beneath the waves, grasping the devils hand holding it under as it tries to swim back to the surface.

  • @dokterda im not religious but use religious imagery to explain feelings or situations like their music does

  • That's the problem now days. Everyone listens to the bland and soul less music that "popular" society deems as good. No one wants emotionally connecting or deep music, they listen to the sounds and not the heart of the song or even a part that just connects to you. Like for me the Woah! just give's me chills, and I feel like someone actually understands what I feel like.

  • @In5anityi5Awe5ome This song gives me the chills 2. Jesse Lacey is one of the only songwriters who actually expresses his emotions through his lyrics. Western society has made it abnormal for people to talk about their feelings openly. Men cannot talk about their feelings because they will be considered weak, but if you bottle up your emotions you can do some serious damage to yourself. There is nothing wrong with crying, or feeling sad and depressed, it is part of being human

  • tbs all the way

  • actually, in the bible it says anyone that hurts a child will have a millstone chained to them and dropped in the deepest ocean. i think he holds some guilt over some of the girls/groupies that he may have taken advantage of and the way the road changed him... alot of people think hes saying milestone in the lyric but hes actually saying my own stone.

  • I keep imagining Michael Stipe singing the chorus in this song, with Mike Mills singing the backing 'woaahoo"

  • as i am reminded every day by my father "music is the universal language of peace" and you people commenting on it bashing peoples religions just ruins it like really just stop please

  • this song so good cause i relate so much to the lyrics

  • This song's about whatever the fuck you want it to be about. "I used to pray that God was listening, I used to make my parents proud."

  • @EmersonAilidh he is talking about the dreamworld that christians live in, the fulfilment they have from their beleifs and how he lost them...its about the inner struggle that one has when trying to find faith in something..the whole fucking album is about it.....hence then name the devil and god are raging inside me.....

  • This song makes me regret those days i didnt know Brand New

  • BRAND NEW<3

  • Is this a religious band? I never really made that connection until now...

  • @HecateEnthroned666

they use religious methaphors but it's not really a religious band

  • @blurty Ahhh, that's what I thought but I wasn't sure. Not saying religious bands are bad or anything, it's just harder to relate to something if it's all about Jesus haha.

  • O_O Genius.

  • Every Brand New song holds such meaning. The lyrics are amazing. <3 Love them.

  • "Now I've made this bed and I can't fall asleep in it."

  • 268,179

  • THE BEST ONE

  • such a deep song lol

  • TAKE MEEE OUT 2NITEEEE

    WOAAAAHHHHH OHHHH

  • i love this song.

  • isn't it "a millstone around my neck" not "my own stone around my neck"

  • Jesse Lacey is a lyrical genius and he's fucking gorgeous.

  • @girl123interrupted you just want to bang him. he's not a lyrical genius at all. admit it! he is a dumb pretty boy who presents himself as a lyrical genious. NO SOUL. for real lyrical genius look at JEFF MANGUM who is a artist this guy plagerizes constantly.

  • Well, his lyrics mean a lot to me, when I was going through dark times with bad people and I felt like I didn't want to be around anymore, I turned to brand new and saw the light at the end of the tunnel. Jesse has soul and his words mean a lot to me and a lot of people. He's more than a "pretty boy" to me and if you'd actually listen to the words in each song, they all have a specific meaning & its beautifully written!

  • @girl123interrupted Lyrical genius? No. Just look at the things Maynard James Keenan has wrote. Now he's a lyrical genius. Another great example is Josh Homme. That fucker can write. The list goes on and on. Lou Reed, Iggy Pop, Dan Auerbach, really early Ozzy (I'm talkin' about Black Sabbath), Gregg Ginn, Henry Rollins, D. Boone, Mike Watt, Aesop Rock, Robert Plant (I'm not talking about the blues covers. Just listen to "The Battle of Evermore"), Al Cisneros, etc...

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green cont.

The lyrics to this song are very generic. It's typical teen angst shit. I mean, come on. Kurt Cobain mastered the whole teen angst thing. These guys are just (trying) to compete with him. Just try to dissect the weird shit that guy wrote. Jesse Lacey = Mediocre lyricist at best. I could write the shit he wrote. The guy is using a fucking lyrical formula. "I'm upset because 1.A girl broke up with me or 2. I hate my parents." Hell, even Jack White writes better.

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green alright, get off of here before i murder you. Jesse Lacey is amazing and one of the best song writers on here! i doubt you could even come close to the lyrics he writes. you, sir, are one ignorant person. if you hate this music so much why are you even here? do you even know who you are messing with? Brand New's fan are the shit and i really wouldn't mess with any of them if i were you.. Just letting you know.

  • @xBrushedRedx2010 I like Brand New. I've liked Brand New for a really long time. But it's bullshit to say he's a lyrical genius. He's mediocre and you know it. All of the people I listed are superior song writers compared to Jesse Lacey. Listen to "The Battle Of Evermore" by Led Zeppelin or "Battery" by Aesop Rock. If you're looking for angry lyrics, listen to "Padded Cell" by Black Flag. Those are all examples of why Jesse Lacey is a mediocre song writer.

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green dude your by far the biggest idiot on youtube. just because his lyrics go way over your head doesnt mean they are mediocre nor is jesse aiming for "angry" lyrics. stfu you dont know your dick from a hole in the ground. your obviously not very musically inclined so keep your half wit opinion to yourself.

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green read every lyric of the devil and god and say this shit again..limousine, jesus christ, luca...god somebody shut this fucking guy up...go listen to black sabbath because ozzy was such a timeless lyricists. bahahaha..go pop somemore of your daddys cassette tapes into your dusty boom box and jack off

  • @jesserunyon You ever listen to The Jesus Lizard? Read every lyric of the album "Liar". David Yow is a far superior lyricist to Jesse Lacey. Like I said, I like Brand New, but Jesse Lacey is no great lyricist. He's mediocre at best. Go be a hipster and cut your dick to Grizzly Bear, you fuckin' indie faggot.

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green Also, not very musically inclined? You don't even know me. I can throw insults around to you piece of shit indie cock sucker.

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green yeah im soo indie! nice assumption. the cut my dick to grizzly bear part was kinda funny tho. dick jokes make me smile.

  • @spicyMcHAGGIS9green

i find it funny that you think you're qualified to say who is and who is not a good lyricist. Standards are all a matter of opinion you stewpid indy phaggat. lewk @ thi5 eyem soaw kewl cuz eye trollllll.

  • @Mxttym4yh3m U so mad.
