It's not always about using a binky to stop a baby from crying. We had to use it to teach my baby how to breath through her nose on her own. it was actually recommended by the specialist in the special care unit. When a baby has troubles like that it can be a form oftherapy to help newborns. It destroys their teeth if you allow them to continue to use it when they start to get teeth.easier to stop them from using it if you limit it to sleep time.Don't allow the use ALL day like a lot of parents do
Give up my Pacifier which Elmo calls Binky (new word for me) when I was 5 years old in Belgium. My Nanny put some poison on it and since then I stopped.
I hate to see kids that can walk and talk still going around with a binky in their mouth. I have seen parents just pop them in there as a way to just shut the kid up. When I have children unless they have a medical problem or they have a lot of issues with being calmed as a baby I will not even use a binky on them at all
@Lucailey That's easy for you to say. A lot of babies fall asleep by "dry" breastfeeding, When you give them formula that clearly isn't possible, and the equivalent is a binkie. Babies have a strong urge to suck, and some babies won't stop crying until they are fulfilled. Unless you've had a baby I don't think you can really have any say in what other parents do with their babies. Although I do agree that by the time they're talking it they REALLY don't need it anymore.
@GrimmReaperess What does being a parent have to do with my oppinion? My mother was a parent ( obviously mine.) and she was totally against using binkies. I turned out just fine thank you very much. I am also a day care teacher and I have seen how obsessive children can become over binkies. When I was a preschool teacher I saw binkies being popped in children's mouths to shut them up before going home. Giving a baby a binky is only creating problems for the day when you have to take it away.
@Lucailey Not all children are completely obsessed, though. And not all children have problems giving them up. I just think it's very unfair for you to bash binkies completely, considering not all children are monsters who constantly suck on them and throw a tantrum when they can't.
@GrimmReaperess But why start them on something they will only have to give up? That would be like me telling you it is okay to smoke and then a year later taking it away from you and making you have to get used to not using your crutch? Why do that? Why not show children other ways to calm themself?
@Lucailey (Part 1) What a ridiculous statement. "Why not show children other ways to calm themself?" Yes, because you can rationalize with a newborn. Most babies begin using binkies shortly after birth, if not immediately after. Tell me exactly how you are supposed to show a newborn ways to cope with their strong and natural urge to suckle? There is no way.
@Lucailey (Part 2) Also, I find it offensive that you would compare cigarettes to binkies. A cigarette is full of toxins, and we are not BORN with the urge to smoke. However, newborns are BORN with the urge to suckle.
@GrimmReaperess (Part 3) One more thing, I'd like to see you deal with an extremely colicky baby for days on end. When you're in a desperate situation and can't get your baby's cries to stop (which breaks any parent's heart) something tells me you'd attempt to calm him/her with a binkie.
@GrimmReaperess Arguing here is just silly. I know of other people that have gone though life never having to quit the binky and they did just time. In olden times they didn't exist, children simply used the thumb. I also wasn't comparing the toxins in cigs. to binkys. I was comparing the fact that it is hard to quit either one and starting a child on a binky is just setting them up for dissapointment when they have to " quit" just like quitting smoking - also a comfert object. Lets not argue
Why would you give away a pacifier?? (or as they call them where I am in Australia dummies) if you have sucked on it why would any one else want it ? They are like 2 dollars at the supermarket anyway. Haha but Elmo, you are ADORABLE. Soo cute :):) I love you
Cute! Makes me glad the paci wasn't accepted until recently... she consider's it more of a teether!
And @kerricp- you don't actually give binkies away... kind of like how when your pet dies your parent says it ran away. It didn't run away. But that's an easier way of putting it so the kid doesn't completely lose it or go through loss.
take this down sesame street!!!! there are some serious diseases out there, these should not be shared, only thrown out!! talk about population control! ugh
@KerriCP Most little kids don't have such spreadable diseases that can be spread by sharing a pacifier. If a parent knew they did have such a thing, such as HIV/AIDS, Im sure the parent would be smart enough not to give it away. Plus, thats why you sterilize them. Nothing better than getting a drool-covered pacifier for a birthday huh? It's not even really giving them away, its just a reason for little ones to give up their pacifiers. Its for the best, I didn't stop early and my teeth suffered.
@KerriCP The idea is that the child will think that the binky is being given to a baby. Most preschoolers like to think of themself as a big kid. So, they would like the idea of giving up a "baby" thing and giving it to a "baby" It does not actually mean they they will really actually give it to a baby. It is more stroking their ego into letting them give up the binky. Of course this wouldn't be an issue if those disgusting "child shutter uppers" weren't used in the first place.
@princesaplastica - Yeah, I'm actually kind of disapointed at Sesame Street here. They were doing a great job with the "Bye-Bye Binky" series up until here.
Um. You commenters don't understand. It's not for really giving used pacifiers away. It's a trick to get kids to give up their habit. And also a reminder to parents to not allow such a habit because it messes up their future and existing teeth.
@FlimsyNimsy Really commenting such a thing on a Elmo Video? Wow dude, where your morality? You're actually, most likely, not going to catch a disease since people sterilize binkys commonly. And kids don't have typically have such oral diseases; or ones that can be passed orally. And there's no fun sucked out of either of the 2 things you stated if they're already used.
