"Joe" at 7:07 of this clip was Joseph Benti, who was onsite at a CBS studio (either in New York or at Television City in Los Angeles), getting ready to anchor the "Morning Nwes" (in those days airing from 7-8 A.M. EDT).
Can anyone please explain to me, how; in prominent hotel, in a large city like Los Angeles, hosting a televised presidential primary acceptance speech by what could have been the next president of the United States, with hundreds in attentance(including a former olympian and a NFL great) had ZERO police, fire and rescue units attached to what became one histories most shocking events??????Heck my brother had family reunions where he hired atleast one cop and a lifegaurd for his swimming pool..
I like how at :38, the reporter pushes the other report who walked in on the interview and shoves him out of the way and said, "Sir, get out." How nice.
any of you author's ever tried to connect lee harvey oswald, james earl ray and, sirhan sirhan? hmm? the shock from the truth could disable you. was the shah of iran present at the kennedy speech? you do the math!
"...i said to the president the act of contrition..." from what i understand, this was a common gaffe in the seconds, minutes, hours, days after this shooting. i'll always be proud of my late wife's working as a teenage volunteer for rfk's run for the democratic nomination at the time of this nightmare. i love you, forever, abby!
lol everyone knew the Kennedy's were Catholic, no need to ask.. you can say he was grandstanding, or you can say that he was anxiously expressing reassurance to catholics nationwide that religiously proper last rites were delivered. And no I'm not xtian btw. But if I were catholic I would be grateful to God to this "boy" for keeping sound presence of mind enough to offer RFK this last rite shxt under such pandemonium.
Shxt what does that mean? Are you saying that the young man was a good person for giving the last rites? And that it was a miracle that the young man managed to do that in the midst of all the pandemonium?
Something like that. Except replace where you said "miracle" with "a good thing to catholics nationwide" .. I'm not xtian or religious thus I don't believe in miracles.
I dont mean miracle in the supernatural sense, but the fact that the crowd could have got in the way of the man giving the last rites,I think you more or less said this before me.
Kind of sick, isn't it? He seemed to be enjoying it too much, then he gets pissed because people are asking him questions. Reminds me of that comedy bit that Eddie Murphy did, where the guy gets hit by the car.
"S**T yeah, I SEENT IT! You just missed it! Godd***, you shoulda seent that s**t!"

It seemed to mean a lot to Robert that he had prayers said over him but I also see the point of view that people are sort of boasting by making it known that "i was there,i saw it" if you know what I mean. When it is actually a very serious situation.

While I agree that Catholic boy might have come across as odd or showy, it's possible that back then during those times, people were different about expressing their religious affiliation, I think. Especially Irish-American or other such Catholics wanting to be expressive about having some association with helping their "own kind."
In any case I'd like to think this man's gesture of faith and rosary probably gave some solace and reassurance to RFK in his final moments of consciousness.
Great bit of sad history. However, as we have seen time and time again, reporters doing their first reports don't know what they are saying, nobody has the facts, and they just interview eye witnesses who are not reliable. Conspiracy theories get their life blood from those first confused hours.
Right away Mike Wallace tells the world that it was one gunmen with a 6-shot revolver. Just how would he know that? Compelete hearsay. Thats how fast they get out the cover story. Hes reading a script.
That means Thane Cesar, Kennedy's rent-a-cop escort, who was standing directly behind and to his right, holding Kennedy's right arm, had to have shot him while everyone was looking at Sirhan or else diving for cover. Sounds wild, but let's just pretend this is a CSI Miami. No way the shots came from Sirhan, who was always in front of Kennedy and never closer than 6 feet. Had to be someone else and Cesar was the only one in position.
i'm not challenging you in any, just wondering what you think of dan moldea's conclusion that sirhan fired the fatal head shot, despite his being in front of rfk, because that shot was not the first shot fired, but, rather, the second or third shot, after everyone's initial positioning had shifted once the firing began? it sounds plausible, but, i wonder if you think it's possible? thanks.
Figure the bullet in Kennedy's shoulder pad, the others wounded, and the bullets in the walls and ceiling are all from Sirhan's 8 shot revolver. But the three major bullets in Kennedy were all from behind, angled upward, and fired from no more than 3" away.
There is a noticeable thing too. The first reporter kicks the other reporter away when he sees the second reporter is stealing the new from him and pushes him away too. The media power was beginning.
Just clearing the camera sight (ours too) 2nd news guy didn't realise. Not spite, too much duty/history in the room: Also see in pt2: news guy returns to podium from 'out back' says to pro media pool "I didn't see it" meaning 'I got hearsay not reportable fact'. Get it? They already heard shots: But dead or alive? Good journalists don't broadcast hearsay. No premature Fox 'news', they wait for eye witness if any. Good job in a bad bad situation. Bobby opens here March 2007 in Oz.
I saw it too. When JFK was shot, UPI and AP reporters were fighting over the mobile phone. In America, most press outlets are private businesses and they fight over scoops.
Kennedy shot four times - head, neck, chest and through the shoulder of his suit jacket. 5 others shot. Bullets pulled out of the walls, ceiling and door jamb. That's, what ... 9, 10, maybe even 11 bullets.
Priests do the last rites or Anointing of the Sick because that is a sacrament. They act as Christ in preparing the soon to be deceased on their way to heaven. Act of Contrition is mainly for Pennance.
He has just wone the primary to run for President. People were calling him the President because more than likely he would have won. Kind of a premature nickname so to speak.
Those reporters made self rightous pmpous asses out of themselves. He would answer their questions and they kept asking him the same questions again and again.

Can a layman administer the act of contrition, or does a priest have to do it? I do understand that the act is a simple prayer, but...

Most likely because they were all flashing back to JFK's own shooting, and also because this was, after all, when Bobby was running for president.
