  • I love her but she dances like a monkey XD

  • LOL, Ozzy Osbourne totally ripped her stage act off.

  • Big record companies cannot see past what sells millions of records. Look how many clones we have of Brittany and her ilk. There is plenty of talent out there but most of it is put in the corporate package and dumbed down to sell to eighth graders and the like.

  • @faarfromit I never thought of it that way ... YOUR RIGHT!

  • Honest and powerful ... I adore the Divinyls ... how I wish we had more music from them ... but we have tons of pop glam finger fuck britney shit ... which isn't music ... just audio masturbation for sparkle sluts who wish they had half of Chrissy's raw charm.

  • I NAMED MY FIRST BORN CHILD ELSIE AFTER THIS SONG

  • JESUS, LIFE IS A FUCKEN BITCH WHEN IT COMES DOWN TO IT

  • I remember seeing this on late night tv back in 84 and was blown away by Christine. I bought their album the next day.

  • I never fully appreciated this when it first came out. I always knew when they played it live, it meant "show's over folks" and the crowd slowly, begrudgingly & unwillingingly headed for the doors. Your adrenaline high for the night ebbed as the song reached its inevitable conclusion. But many times I stayed behind until the very last note was played, not wanting yet another brilliant performance to end. Watching this clip sends a chill up my spine as I re-live the brilliant band, The Divinyls.

  • Divinyls are so awesome.

  • This is one of my ten favourite songs of all time. Thank you Divinyls.

  • This chick's got a screw loose!

  • Fave LP in 1980,,,still is...Nobody seemed to get it. What a show it would be her & Iggy doing a duet

  • @wichititty1

If you're refering to Divinyls' debut album, "Desperate", the year of release was 1983, not 1980.

  • Lady Gaga? yeah and that Spears chick from the Mickey Mouse show...Christina and Chrissie are 2 gems from days gone by..

  • Thanks for bringing back the memories of seeing them in '83.

    A spine tingling show.

  • Saw Chrissie and Mark many times in small Perth pubs like the Nookenburra, she was a very naughty girl indeed and their live act is well represented by this effing awesome video..... Oh for the days of live Aussie pub rock.. INXS, Cold Chisel, Angels, Baby Animals, Innocent Bystanders, Midnight Oil, Divinyls, Goanna, Jimmy Barnes, The Church (saw em all) etc were all at the top of their games...

  • Great Aussie talent! Johnny & Molly wld b so proud!

  • Saw them in KC in 1986. I had such a crush on her. Incredible entertainer.

  • This was pretty exciting music back in the day... and it's still exciting! This version of the Divinyls was very original and they were much different from the popular rock bands of the early 1980's. They weren't metal and they weren't new wave. I'd say they were a very unique hard rock band during this time. When I first heard Amphlett singing way back then it was like WOW - what the hell is this! I'm afraid a lot of people took this music for granted. Now we get the winners of American Idol...

  • this performance of a classic song just blew me away..what a woman..what a band ,ive never seen this before..if i dont get off you tube i will go bankrupt i keep finding gems like this.

  • WOW!

I remember this night like it was yesterday!

    I haven't seen this in 27 years!

I loved Rock "N Roll Tonite and The Divinyls!

    Thanks for posting!

  • Perhaps punk, new wave, or and early example of grunge. Great performance

  • Is it punk, new wave, or an early example of grunge? Damn good rock n roll from a bygone era.

  • The LOOK is coming, but Chrissie's not quite there yet. By the time of "I Touch Myself" and "I'm On Your Side", she has it.

  • spine tingling, awsome, what can you say. As a live act you cant or wont go past the DIVINYLS

  • The impact..... incredible! Gives me the chills and a total moodswing!

  • can this video/dvd be purchased at all?

  • There will never be another Chrissy Amphlette.

  • Chrissy, what a horn husky voice..

Top aussie rock, bring back the 80's and all our great bands! Bring back $1.50 schooners, and the ability to go see 4 bands for $10

  • I like her dress. This song is gorgeous too.

  • Incredible!!!! This is one the best PERFORMANCES I've ever seen .. more than that ... totally UNDERRATED!!!!

  • @ERDFERKEL i've known the song for years.....from the monkey grip album i believe and this is the first time i have seen this video. like you, i am totally blown away by chrissy's performance. the last part where she has the lipstick..........powerful and disturbing. it's actually quite emotional. i 100% agree with your thoughts!

  • Devastating. Could beat Godzilla in a cage match. LOVE this band.

  • The Divinyls are the real deal, everyone else are shit. They tie it all together like nobody else. Chrissy just kicks ass!!!!!

  • My favorite song of they !

  • From 82-89 ish I saw them 40 times. Always up the front. One of my great childhood memories. Always loved Elsie.

  • @glebe3047 I only saw them once and that was in 89 at Manly beach in Sydney I was 19 at the time and partying like there was no tomorrow. Just wish I hadn't been drinking quite as much on that day then maybe my memory would be a little clearer.

  • @taipan185

    i was there too....

mark was rocking the white steinberger guitar, ill never forget it, my first rock n roll gig....

  • Thank you Mich for posting this... I have wanted to see this live forever! Brilliant!!

  • What a powerful vocal performance as well as stage presence by Chrissy......were people blind to greatness back then?

  • This is one chick.......that if you were married to her. You had better not piss her off or she will fuck you up very bad.

  • sounds close to the studio version. If I didn't hear a little waver in the vocal

    I'd bet it wasn't live.

  • @dank1j that was one of the great things about divinyls. You don't really "experience" them unless you got to see them live. However, it has been said numerous times. Divinyls can recreate that studio sound live and they did it very very often. they were so underrated, it should have been a crime.

  • @Kneph1 great band live in the EARLY DAYS.

  • Best damn dark rock song of the 1980's. Chrissy's unique vocals and the blistering guitar. Cant get better than this folks

  • aSOME CD AND SONG

  • This song is so haunting. Shannam138

  • favorite Friday afternoon song right here. I envy anyone who had the chance to see this awesome band back in the day when they were up and coming.

  • I can't tell you how much I love this song. It's one of about 3 or 4 guaranteed to make me cry when I hear it. It always has.

Thanks for putting all this Divinyls stuff up mitch547! Particularly the stuff from Desperate.

  • Awesome saw chrissy live a few times this really takes me back

  • how utterly hypnotic

  • I fuckin' love the howling @ 3:26!!! Always did and always will

  • That's Rock!

    Thanks for posting this.

  • Jeez What crap we're being fed today.

  • @yoyopa52

    For real. Makes me sick.

  • How did we go from this to Lady Gaga? What happened???

  • Saw the band live in a club gig here in Melbourne Australia in the late 70's early '80s from memory -great power sound, then the main act Cold Chisel came on and blew them out of the water..a great period in Australian rock music

  • ya i know. . . This is WAY better!!!!!!!!!

  • @sunjy5 kids started getting fed trash and told that was their music and they didn't know any different

  • @sunjy5 De-Evolution happened.

  • @sunjy5: Never-mind how we went from this to Lady Gaga. What I'm wondering is how we went from this to "I Touch Myself." Chrissy the ogre was thoroughly original. Chrissy the sexpot was comparatively pedestrian; though predictably more commercially lucrative. Just like Gaga. I'll take the ogre any day.

  • @sunjy5 It's a real kick in the balls isn't it :(

We really do need a few more women in the rock world like Chrissy.

  • @sunjy5 Amen, my friend. What happened indeed.

  • F.Y.I. nchantedinoz...In the U.S. when it was released the Desperate album did indeed have Elsie on it...Also on the re-issue C.D. i purchased on Amazon 5 years ago,,peace

  • Its strange cause i remember back in the early 80s i wore out ( got eaten ya know ) the Desperate cassette tape. I loved it & it gave me chills. Seemed i was the only one around who listened to it or even wanted too. It was like others didnt " get it " ya know..of course im in a little podunk Oklahoma shit town then,,lol,,allways jammed to the unique, dark & different such as Iggy & Lou Reed though,,anyways how in the hell this didnt then or even now explode cause its so awesome !..

  • I was just thinking what it would have been like if Chrissy had done something with Bon Scott

  • she looks so pretty with the dry hair.

  • what a great fucking SONG!!!

  • I remember watching this exact performance on TV when I was a kid back in'84 it was on late for my bedtime, but i snuck into the TV room to watch it, I was about 12-13yrs old

  • OPEN THE DOOR WALLY, OPEN THE DOOR!!!

  • who is wally???

  • Thank you so much for this video.

Elsie was actually on the Monkey Grip soundtrack... not Desperate .. In Australia that is..

  • BEST!!!!

  • Oh what a beautiful deep creepy song! It's like.. how do I put it: Like she was the left behind daughter of Eleanor Rigby - and this song is about where Elsie ended up 20 years later...

  • Nice little summation beefy!!! lol

  • well said

  • No wonder Divinyls never made it big in the US: too hard-edged, too punk, too sincerely anguished for USians to take -

I always loved them, myself --

two amazing albums of the 80's were the first Pretenders LP and Desperate -

  • I totally agree! Americans are too wimpy to appreciate anything "too" hard-edged for the most part-and I'M American!! Christina is one of a kind-so charismatic, original and SO captivating onstage. Plus, an AMAZING voice! It's so sad that I've heard she's suffering from MS! Is that really true? That truly sucks!!

  • Yeah...I agree space but I also think its all about marketing -or lack of it, I mean I look around and see kids buying whatever is crammed down their throats without understanding they are being manipulated -this music took a simular path that Black Sabbath went through a decade earlier -basically very little (if any) airplay with any fame happening through word of mouth

  • Yep, no offence but America is the land of easy listening.

  • no offense, but didn't you give the world olivia newton-john and little river band? he who lives in glass houses...

  • We are allowed a few slip ups.

  • Never saw them live. Really enjoyed this and the guitar work.

  • I do not speak very good English but he says in a minute 1:09 - 1:13

    if I can post please

    thanks

  • If I am understanding your post you want to know what Chrissy is saying during the time you mention - If so it is "Never had a chance from the beginning" Cheers

  • Thank you very much

  • Still WOW ! Totally Mesmerizing !

  • Mesmerizing ! wow

  • when i first heard "i'm only happy when it rains" by garbage, i liked it becuase it sounded like it was influenced by Christina Amphlett and the divinyls.

  • my favorite song of all time. i love this band.

  • After seeing this, I have to believe that women like PJ Harvey, Courtney Love and even Kristin Hersh owe a lot to this woman. Before her time, for sure....

  • It is too bad that the music scene critics here in the states pretty much shot this band in the foot when they hit the airwaves here.. i reall love Chrissy and this band.. She is my all time fave Feamle Singer!!!!

  • what does it mean for a critic to shoot a band in the foot? lol show me the reviews you're talking about, please.

  • For all u melbournites, this EP is the soundtrack for the movie Monkey

Grip starring nonie hazelhurst. If i remeember theres footage of the fiztroy swimming pool. I must watch it again. I absolutey love this song, and have played it so many times. Thanks for that mitch547.

  • I have the soundtrack. Great album. Much of it was used for Desperate but the version of Elsie was rawer on Monkey Grip.

Also, I don't call that Christine going crazy, that's her doing yet another awesome over the top performance

  • yup very true .. "Elsie" was also the flip side of the single "Siren". still have that one and still play it

  • this it it!

    christina amphlete is genius!

  • Oh my gosh, 2:20 gave me a stiffie.

  • These F'ing video's should have 5 million views. It's a tragedy. I just discovered them by accident and my mind is totally blown. Some of the GREATEST performances of all time ! By this highly under-appreciated Band !

  • how did u accidently discover them?

    x.chantelle.

  • Watching an Inxs video and this video came up on the sidebar. Once I picked my jaw and self off the floor...after passing out for around 10 minutes I watched the rest of their video's. : )

  • HAHAHA nice, i can't get this song as in like a real song, so if any one is able to some how send it to me much appreciated . and i also can't get the song 'Gonna get U', i've looked everywhere for the album aswell.

    thank you

  • Comment removed

  • hey MediaPointEnt...i seem to remember you picking your jaw up in another post, too. better have it reattached lest you lose it.

  • he normally listens to r&b casset tapes then accidentally listened to JJJ and heard this.... clearly it was a accident...

  • Linda Blair + Marilyn Manson + Tori Amos = HOT

  • way scarier than P.J. Harvey, in a totally awesome way

  • i think i saw this at the riv in chicago?

  • fredstreisand: This was filmed at the Raymond Theatre (aka Perkins Palace) in Pasadena, California. The 88-year-old theatre (which was once owned by the father of Van Halen singer David Lee Roth!) is currently slated to be replaced by a condominium and retail space. There's a move on to save it, organized by concert promoter Gina Zamparelli, who operated the theatre during the period this Divinyls concert took place. Search "raymondtheatre" (friends of) at myspace for more details.

  • Thank You

  • FUCK I so missed this whole thing.... people put the Pixies up on this HUGE Pedestal. And Rightly So... But no one... I mean NO ONE mentions the Divinyls..... Its like discovering the Pyramids and realizing there was utter greatness before you were even thought of.

  • Well put bro. That's how I feel !

  • absolutely brilliant.............

  • Pete Townsend slammed axes into amps; Jimi screwed his strat and burned it up; Chrissy jumps on an invisible pogo and puts on warpaint. What's the difference?

  • So you're saying...what? That Chrissy follows in the tradition of greats and thus deserves equal respect? Or perhaps your suggesting that Chrissy lacks originality by engaging in such antics? Whatever. Just as there's a lot more to Townshend and Hendrix than smashing, burning and humping guitars, there's likewise a lot more to the Divinyls than jumping up and down in warpaint.

  • Great, Great band!! - truly under-appreciated as others have noted! - Chrissy A. wasn't afraid to go into some very dark areas! - and they were a good 10 years before 'grunge'- ahead of their time!- should be in the R&R hall of fame! - let's all blitz them to include them!!!

  • I agree !!!! thank you sirdoug3 for sharing !

  • They were inducted by Hugh Jackman three years ago. Try reading the news. ;)

  • Fucking awesome :) This song gives me shivers.

  • this is sad but true explains me to a t with love 31573

  • Some people wondered why chrissy was moaning and groaning in this song. Elsie is a sad song and chrissy's aim was to feel and show the sadness and misery Elsie was experiencing in her life. And when she say's " open the door wally, " it's how Elsie feels locked out of society and alone. Chrissy and Mark are brilliant songwriters and performers.

  • This band was so underated.

  • self mutilation... the head banging wonder how her neck feels now? and POGo without a POGO she got the power and handled it way better than Kurt cobain. She didn't blow her brains out. Too much of this day in day out can't be good. But once in awhile it is FUN!

  • Christina Amphlett: what a woman! This clip is astonishing and shows Divinyls at what must be their peak. When she bangs her head and pogos she is genuinely eerie -- is more like performance art than a rock gig. And then after she scrawls all over herself with lipstick it's like she's channelling Linda Blair in the Excorcist!

  • Ditto you said exactly what I was thinking. Gotta love her. I like it. alot

  • A True Australian rock band ,Only a very few Aussie bands will be remembered for ever and The Divinyls will most definatly be one of them !

  • SHE NEVER HAD AN EDUCATION

SHE USES LIFE AS HER VOCATION

STANDING ON LEDGES,CLINGING TO THE EDGES

THE WORLD'S A HARD PLACE TO LAND ON The Divinyls are an extremely underated band.If you look beyond Chrissy's stage persona and read and listen to their songs, there is great richness.Their songs are raw, real and go way below the surface.Chrissy and Mark are up there with the very best singer/songwriters.

  • God Bless You, Mitch! My younger friends don't even know about Divinyls-- your posts are a fantastic introduction!!!

    WooHoooo!!!

  • Yes Chrissy has been living with MS for some years now. On a brighter note Charley (Chrissy's husband and Divinyls drummer) has posted a message on the Divinyls Facebook page to say that something is bound to happen, although he is not sure what, and a brief message from Chrissy to say stay tuned for 2009!

  • She could always be hot at times but I hate it when she walks like a scarecrow.

  • Thank you - This is still tops..

  • This band deserved a lot more attention in the US than they got. Christine has one of the most unique powerful female voices in Rock.

  • I wish that this show was on DVD!

  • You and me both mate. I heard a rumour last year there was going to be a Divinyls DVD released called "Greatest Gigs" but have heard nothing since.

  • my favorite band of all time. i want their new album. i live in south carolina anybody know how i can get i, please let me know.

  • i love this song and my name is Elsie

  • Love the old stuff especially Elsie any body know how chissys MS is doing?

  • I'm not about sure about the current details of her condition bashue69, but I saw a recent photo of her and Mark McEntry at an award show, and she was walking with a cane. Perhaps many of us could send her letters of support and encouragement.

  • what is the cause of Chris' using a cane?

  • Sadly, Chrissy has been suffering from M.S. for some time now. She has only recently gone public about it. It seems likely that the reason she was using a cane at the awards show was because her condition is getting progressively worse. Perhaps some of us could send her letters of support and encouragement.

  • My absolute favorite band of my 20's.. Thanks so much for this, thought it was all lost forever :)

  • Thank you for posting this.. it was this show that got me hooked on the band and Chrissie! It truly brings back some memories.

  • Absolute classic. Monkey Grip EP still one of my favs. I remember seeing this lot at a local hotel in front of 50 people. Thanks for the memories.

  • this woman can drink my ass under the table.

  • Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! I have been looking for this song for forever! I used to have this album, then, like an idiot, I sold it. This was the song that first turned me on to this fantastic vocalist back in the day.

  • same here! i had heard boys in town on the radio, but hearing elsie on the radio broadcast of their US Festival performance had me hooked!

  • This CD has recently been re released and lovingly remastered! I live in America, so I had to order it from Amazon. Hopefully they'll do the same with there entire catalog soon.

  • This song never fails to shock and captivate, even at last years gigs it was the same timeless sad, lonely, dark and harrowing tale of Elsie.

  • Wow, they still did Elsie at last years gigs? I wish I could have seen them!

  • Yes, they sure did. She sung it with alot of gusto, Mark's guitar work was as blistering as ever too. This song really stands out as the most enduring memory I take from that gig.

  • I just love this, you can see by the look on some of the audiences faces that they are scared when Chrissy starts roaring towards the end - Fantastic and thanks again!

  • Thanks once again, I am sure Chrissy scares the crap out of some of the audience when she roars - LOL
