XxtoontownfoolxX try tomatoes... not huge ones but like grape tomatoes.. i have rescued 4 turtles ranging in size from a 50cent coin to a cantalope sized off the road. i rescued one yesterday and already all 4 of mine eat the tomatoes out of my hand. ^.^ hope this helps

I have 2 box turtles that we found on the road and saved. It is around hybernation time and they arent eating. I feed them crickets, mealworms, raw meat, strawberries and earthworms. I cant think of anything else.. My girl turtle is burrowing herself under the dirt but my other one isn't. I'm really worried about both of them... What should I do?

Ornate comes from 'ornat', which is Middle English, and stems earlier from the Latin 'ornatus'. Don't brag about an education that you clearly don't have.

@skinnywhop87 Almost all english words are derived from other languages, mostly the romantic ones such as latin, french and spanish. But that doesn't mean they are pronounced the way they were originally in the modern form of the language. It's not pronounced orn-yat-aye at all. Idk where you got that from, but if you look in any modern english dictionary it's pronounced the same way the man in the video pronounced it. Taken directly from Mirriam Webster's dictionary: \ȯr-ˈnāt\.

Yes you guys are assuming it's named after "ornate" patterning. However the patterning in this tortoise species is not Ornate what-so-ever.

The first Ornate box turtle was discovered in my state of New Mexico. It was named after one New Mexico's famous explorers, one of the first people to encounter this group of tortoises (His name was Ornate pronounced ORN-YAT-AYE).

I can name at least 2 species of North American box turtles that are more Ornate (in the english meaning)

That doesn't change how it's pronounced in english. There are many examples in the english language of things named after explorers, places or things from other cultures, but the names are still pronounced according to the english way of speaking. And there are many examples where this is not the case.

I just rescued a box turtle that was being REALLY under cared for and tortured by the peoples kids..i cant make him eat..i have tried random veges (lettuce green beans) and worms..still nothing

wouldnt worry about it. They can go like 6 months without food. He probably is stil spooked. Try fruits because they smell more appealing and make sure his cage is hot or else he wont be hungry.

you should give it fresh water every day, and if you have a spray bottle thats never been used, try spraying its tank and its self before you feed it. I do that with my baby box turtle and she usually eats after she's wet. As for food, try feeding it different varieties of fruits and veggies and try to add some protein. protein is really important for your turtle. if you can, buy some dried shrimp or krill, or even find some worms and he/she will eat it. Hope i helped!

im not sure of the wattages, but they need at least 2 lights, one uv, to aid in shell growth and health, and one for heat, but they must have shade, and a shallow dish to get in and out of... they love to bask and soak, and burrow... i soak peat moss in warm water, and it holds the humidity well... you would want to make sure youkeep the temp addiquate so they do not go into hibernation, i try to feed mine everyother day in the sink, i never feed in the tank to avoid bugs...

I have an adult box turtle that will not eat or even go near his food. I have him outside, and he doesn't like soil we already tried soil and he escaped from it. Now we have him in a kiddie pool on our back porch and he seems to like it cause he likes sitting in water, and there is a great sorce of water for him, but he just won't eat?! Some box turtle are highly or semi-aquatic kind ex. S.E asian box turtle are highly aquatic, they do love to eat inside water, I preffer you make an outdoor pond with basking area...the food should be animal matter and plant matter...give them both at the same time. if you dont feel comfortable cutting them, bring it too apet shot, theyll do it for like 5 buks,.. they have a special nail trimmer, that has a backing on the back of it so you dont cut into their blood vessles in their nails... if you look thru the light, you can barley see them... i hold her in my hand, and let her legs just hang, and look at her in the eyes to distract her, and just snip... you also have to clip their beaks too, she lets me do it most of the time..

no box turtles eat alot of insects like 30% of their diet is bugs. you can buy canned insects of formulated box turtle diet at the store to make sure it gets what it needs in its diet. just throwing that out there. . .
