Al-Hasan al-Basri (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: this aayah was revealed concerning singing and musical instruments (lit. woodwind instruments). (Tafseer Ibn Katheer, 3/451).

Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allaah have mercy on him) said: The interpretation of the Sahaabah and Taabiin, that idle talk refers to singing, is sufficient.

How can music be haram?

Music is made up of vibrations (energy), (just like the rest of the world) Allah vibrates his energy through us. Allah spoke, and made this world. Allah of cause does not speak. So therefore Allah must send out vibrations. Vibrations, Music, Sound.

We have emotions and sometimes, music can have its positive and negative effects on these emotions. But one can not deny the feeling one gets from a really beautiful uplifting song, piece of music, melody or beat.
