  • Nice vid, but don't you mean fake *shallow* depth of field.

  • @KowalFilms guess you could always change the direction in which you drag the gradient to create a wide depth of field

  • helluva

  • you are the best photoshop teacher i love all your tuturial

  • quite catchy, thanx!!!

  • Whoa, that was awesome!!! THANK YOU!!!!!

  • you can add a second layer above the others to add realistic depth of field for the background if you like to get the sharpness in the middle of your picture.

then you can use the eraser on that layer (not on his mask!) to give objects (people which not belong to the background) their sharpness back.

i used gaussion blur 1.4 for me. good luck!

  • CHEATER

  • @ScotPhotography noo .. :)

  • can u please give us the link to the photos u use in the following tuts

  • simple and great

  • awsom,e an simple

  • great the effect looks natural :)

  • Your method also brings soft focus to the image. In case u don't want this, work just with the Background layer (So, only one layer). Edit in Quick Mask Mode and drag and drop a black to white gradient like you did in the vid. Than go back in Standard Mode. Now you see u made a selection of the parts u want to be out of focus. To do that go to Filter > Blur > Lens Blur. The amount u choose is your own choice. This will create a more realistic look without the soft focus.

  • @Reinierbonis thanks

  • @Reinierbonis Dear Can you upload a tutorial for that cuz i am new to photoshop and I love this tutorial. PLZ help me

  • @Reinierbonis I just have to say its "then" not "than" xD

  • @Reinierbonis Thank you so much!

  • @Reinierbonis Thanks for the tip!

  • he's good

  • nice one, thx

  • Not bad but it's an easy example. If there's a sharp foreground/background divide with maybe someone stood close to the camera and the background far away, you may have to do some pen tooling to cut them out and blur the BG, which would be a bit fiddly. Still, for a photo like this, the technique works really well. Nice video!

  • OMG IVE BEEN WANTING THIS EFFECT FOR ABOUT 5YEARS NOW

  • @Angielyrica wow so long

  • @Angielyrica

and u never though of looking it up no? fukhed

  • @sk83r96 i stopped using it

  • @Angielyrica Or you could just get a camera with a better depth of field :P Macro setting...

  • @TheStrangeChild yea its my bday to day maybe i shud get one for myself lol.

  • @TheStrangeChild or.. learn to use a Digital SLR camera on manual because the user settings only falsely inform you with fake setting information and confuse you when you are ready to start shooting manual...

  • @DustinBodenVEVO That too. I like using the manual setting more anyways... it feels more like actual photography as opposed to just using an automatic setting that lets you point and shoot :p

  • so simple! this is an awesome tutorial thanks!

  • Super easy tutorial, easy to follow and great results, BUT.. I get the same results as gadgetgurl42, it just adds white color, not the blur effect. I'm using CS2, any ideas?

  • @konnykontant

are you doing the gradient on the layer mask? that is most likely your problem.

  • @Sebastian1011 I figured it out later on. I had unticked the layer mask for some reason. Thanks guys!

  • @konnykontant

ALT+click on the mask to edit it.

  • um i dont have the layer mask button. and im using photoshop elements 8. can i still do this?

  • Fantastic, thanks, Howard.

  • Hi, do you know why my gradient just adds white to my image. I have triple checked what I did with you tutorial, but can't see anything different on my screen (CS4). Great tutorial other than this though. Cheers! :)

  • @gadgetgurl42 Have you added the layer mask?

  • @gadgetgurl42

If you're using Windows, make sure you are editing the layer mask by ALT+clicking on the mask to edit it.

  • great video, easy said easy done!

  • You are NOT adding depth of field, you are taking it away.

  • Actually, it would be making it smaller or larger. Not taking it away or giving it.

    -Win.

  • Simply powerful :)

  • dude this is awsome, thank you very much!

  • What photoshop does he use?

  • @adam1611 CS4
