The world know a days is getting more grey...people are getting the blues..where are those great men that could put a smile in millions just by the sound of their voice? all gone...lord..nobody knows..nobody knows..
I was not familiar with Paul Robeson not having a background in this music but I have found it to be a terrific find. Such a beautiful voice, so much history, such an incredible man. The more I learned about him the more I wanted to learn. I have listened to his music for hours.
I once played this for the higher-ups of Lamda Lamda Lamda at a party we threw for them but my friend Lamar turned it off I guess heisn't proud of his African American roots.
I first heard this 33 years ago. It has broken my heart ever since. A critic -- don't recall who -- once said that Robeson had the gift of "elegant simplicity." Hearing this and other recordings of spirituals from his prime, I couldn't agree more. PR cuts straight to the heart of these magnificent songs:) --
TY for posting this! It's the first time I've actually heard the entire song, only the parodies people have made on TV and in movies. It's such a powerful and soulful song.
Oh my, how I enjoy Paul Robesons voice! Pure brilliance and heartfelt emotion. One of the few that can bring tears to my eyes. They simply don't make 'em like they used to!
Thanks for keeping his songs and thoughts alive. Paul Robeson transcends the petty differences of politicians. Anyone have the recordings of the transatlantic concert? I rember being told about them as a lad, from my family in South Wales. They had lived through the depression and the general strikes of the early 20th century....used to cry sometimes, when thinking back to dark days of strife and hunger...
Robeson was an actor and a very fine actor indeed. Probably the pic was from a modelling career that actors sometimes follow when acting does not pay enough, He ws highly intelligent and had a law degree. It was often tough for am intelligent black in 19th Century USA to make a decent living. I wish they would show his old moviues like Sanders of the Rier and Showboat. Prejuedice is not dead yet.........
........witness the hatred expressed even today against the President by ignorant, uneducated Americans and they are not all Republicans. Troubles? Yeah
they removed his passport to preent him travelling. Listen to a copy of "Black Fruit".
Reference to black men women even children hanged from trees in USA not too long ago.
They are re-releasing some of his films next year, I've put in a pre-order for for "The Proud Valley", which is a film I've always wanted to see, since I grew up in the Welsh Valleys. There were about three versions of "Showboat", weren't there? Perhaps they are seen as too derogatory now, which is silly as they have to be seen in their historical context.
If your interested in his thoughts, just read his valedictory statement, "Here I stand", 1958. This was Robeson's personal answer to his critics at the time.
There is as much intelligence, compassion and decency in his written word as there is in his music. Shut your eyes and he is in the same room talking to you! No need to reinvent history, when the man has already spoken at the peak of his powers? A good man, trying to be the best he could be.
This sounds very much like the Robeson recording I played constantly as a teen voice student circa 1977, It was recorded between 1942 and '44, with Lawrence Brown at the piano.
By the 1940s, Robeson's voice had acquired considerable richness and fullness. Listen, for example, to his Victor recordings from the 20s, in which his timbre is much more baritonal:) --
porque de el sino oye uno a los gringos hablar, que monstruo de voz, frank sinatra es un chillon al lado de la voz de este hombre, y tanta alharaca con el vicioso de elvis presley ja ja ja.
when i sing this song, and it's been years since i've thought of it, but i sing it sorry SANG it just like this when i was out on my own by myself.... i'm white and this is awesome.
I first heard Paul Robeson as a small child when I found one of his 78rpm discs in my grandma's record collection. He was idolised in Wales amongst her generation and he's one of my all time heroes...Thanks for this!
He lived in the Rhondda Valley for quite a while after he was kicked out of the US. He loved it and said it was the only place on earth he really felt accepted.
I'm not saying the Welsh are saints but they ask only one thing of you ''can you sing?''
But it must have been his son who did the concerts for the 84-85 strike as I'm sure he was dead by then. His son, Paul Robeson Jr came to my mams house for tea :-)
can't believe I just found out about this guy....what an expressive tone he's got.
