  • I like the idea of a classroom. Stephen Schwartz did an amazing job keeping this show as open to different ideas as possible, but it always seems the same. I like the different ideas here :) And, the show was originally written for 10 characters. 8 stock characters + Jesus + John/Judas :P 5 girls and 5 guys. BUT GOOD JOB, ANYWAYS

  • No,not twelve, but thirteen. And who in the name of all that is holy supposedly directed this? It's just so freakin' static. An ounce of discretion regarding casting might have helped, too. Crap.Is this what passes for regional theatre nowadays?

  • Just for reference sake.. The show has 10 parts... If there's anymore then they just added people cause the cast wasn't strong enough most likely..

    BTW, GREAT AUDIENCE!! (Sarcasm)

  • Interesting set but rally low energy music and again choreography and acting that just make the story and message a joke.

  • @1stNightingale Kind of a strong statement..."story and message a joke." Maybe they're not pros, but I guarantee you that the story and message got out, and in so doing, changed lives.

  • @Bmackkc Well if it did (and i mean the true message) then that is good but i would have to say that the person must very attentive to see the meaning through all the slapstick and magician tricks. But ill reword my statement: ...choreography and acting that make it hard to see the story and message clearly.

  • the blocking was stagey and the movements stiff. Too bad, because the main vocals in this number were superior. Congrats to him.

  • your set looks awfully close the set we used for the alonso HS production back in the day, i was wondering if perhaps you were inspired by it? (i only ask because you guys are in tampa too, lol)

  • It's really confusing the first time I saw this play. When John the baptist became Judas I was so confused. It took me like 10 minutes to figure out what happened.

  • everyone needs to go watch and listen to savannah christian church's remake of this! its SO good. the kid singing has one of the best voices i've ever heard!!

  • Couldn't find it.

  • that was pretty good but newcomerstowns proformance was way better

  • thats waaaaaaaayy differen then newcomerstown's proformance ours was very actveand john rocked s jesus in it

  • This guy did such a great job on this song!

The choreography was pretty great too. And the noises =)

We're doing this show too, and we dance more in this number, but I think it looks REALLy good this way.

    Amazing!

  • This is okay...but I feel like there's NO energy.

  • Wow - this is a representation - The character is not Jesus - he represents a teacher figure. The show is written for 10 parts. Judas and John the Baptist are represented by the same person. Every production of this show for the last 30 years has been 10 people - do your homework before your go all negative on someone next time...

  • Haha! I've always wondered if anyone else noticed that John the Baptist later became Judas in the original play/movie. I've wanted to mention it to my religious friends, but was afraid to offend them (I'm not religious enough and frankly don't know the rules about asking theological questions).

But you've answered my twenty year old question already, Mr. Puffy Rice. Thanks!

  • Did you do the finale where they sing the 'Long Live God' song? I'd love to see it if you did, but I can't find it in your videos :(.

  • I'm sorry but I have to ding you on the 10 people thing. I have seen a 20-25 people cast that worked and looked very well! They added more people to the deciples and they had teh people around play other "characters". It made the resurection sooooo much cooler!

  • Doesn't change the fact that the show is written for 10 people...For a director to adding to pander to auditionees or to appease parents at a school generally waters down the actual meaning of the piece - since you dont' get attached to the characters...

  • I'm doing this with my College and appratnlyit's been done withless than 10 people as well.

As long as there isn't way too manypeople in it it can work.

We have 16 people in ours I think and the harmonies actually sound better with the amount of people we have.

    Ilove Godspell.

This version of the song was really good.

    X's

  • @Shaunpuffyrice I ahve to admit that did happen just a little in our one but the message was still strong just not the characters.

  • Really why bother with something so trivial? Does it change the meaning of the story it conveys if there is only ten people instead of 13? I sure hope not.

  • that was really good! I'm doing godspell this weekend and it definitely won't look anything like this! you're voices are beautiful and i loved the energy :)

  • This is a little static isnt it? In our production of Godspell we had a big energetic dance routine

  • aahhhh, this was so much fun!! :)

  • The lead guy is like really good!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • blocking sucks

  • My friend Michael sang this song in our production of Godspell. He was really funny but this guy is a much better singer.

  • the guys singing the song is soooo cute!!!

  • great vocals, but jesus wasn't a fruit.

  • the guy singing this song isn't jesus.

  • my school is going to do that play......good job nice work

  • ahaha this is so much fun to watch! everyone has such nice voices, and i loved the girl who sings the hi c XDDD

  • this is good but that's one horrible set. I know you can set the thing almost "anywhere" but it just has to have color.

  • Some harsh comments in my opinion. I think it's pretty well done. Lead singer is good. It's not a song where he should be particularly 'opening up' his larynx - he song it well and with good pace and understanding. Nice moves from the cast, and the overall effect worked. It's on my favourites!

  • this is amazing- lead singer has an awesome voice- and I have to say his style is perfect for this musical! Great job and energy!

  • The blocking's very basic and not fun to watch.

  • I hate the voice of the lead singer. It's so nasal

  • i think that can work very well for this song.

    It's great

  • I agree

  • yeah it needs to e lower

  • it's not that it's too nasal. It's just that he really needs to open up his larynx.

  • i really like it

  • I suppose so since I am not religious. The only parts I understood in the whole thing was the last supper and his crusification. I have read the script like 20 times and that is all I understand.

  • Hmm, not you got me curious. In what way would you say you don't understand?

  • the is mostly parables that Jesus taught all through the book of Matthew. if you want you can send me a specific quote and i can probably get the citation and get it to you. also, not the whole script is directly quoted from the Bible...

  • Where is the choreography in this? My gosh. And where is the energy? Well, I suppose this is good considering there are only 10 people in it. My school is performing this right now. There must be about 30 people and we have an awesome choreographer. But the stage in this video is majorly lacking in props and things in general... it looks bare on stage.

  • Wow, you missed the point of Godspell big time.

  • Oh my Jesus! Haha I love it!

  • my skool is doing this ..... and i totaly agree it needs more enery!

  • I agree, total lack of energy here

  • ok vocal patterns are worn out after the third slide down, we need variety.

  • We have to act this out for spring concert. help me. :_(

  • Woah! How boring! They had no energy. Jeffrey sounded like a pop singer too. Bleh!

  • Dang, that suprano lady can sing!

  • yeah, this was surprisingly good. Is this a highschool group? I think this number was left out of the movie version, but it's one of my all time favs from the show, and all time fav songs in general too. Nice harmonies and dancing, and pretty girls :)

  • I can't wait to do this at school!

  • I was just in this show it ended last night! It was great!

  • this song is supposed to be bursting with energy. it looks so...rehearsed. which i know is a contradiction but it feels...fake. and the vocals are really great(when they split into the 4-5 parts it could haven't been blended better but the pitches are spot on)

  • i have the lead part in my school musical for this song...its soo fun!

  • Best One Youtube yet! Bravo!

  • I'm gonna agree with several comments: He sings great, but this scene is boring.

    :(

  • were singing this in chorus and its been stuck in my head for like 5 hours... the entire medley of songs just stuck in my head.... not fun at all.... but otherwise its really cool

  • This was awesome! The lead male sounded really good!

  • That was amazing! You guys did a wonderful job! Good voices!

  • We have a 7th grader playing Jeffery

  • this could've been so much better! such a shame.

  • at the beginning he can so emphasize his voice more... gets boring, quick!

  • how boring!

  • I think the vocals are great.

  • eh its ok...the sound is good, but something is lacking. Energy is low. But still i love this musical. IM in it right now and this is my song! So im still inclined to love it

  • I agree. I think it's just the energy level. The talent is there. They hit the notes. It's really cute. The solocist has a great voice.

    It's just the energy.

  • i agree... but i think a part of it is the choreographed look of it. it doesn't have that free, constant movement that in a way just IS godspell.

  • in my opinion i think this iS FANTASTIC... REALLY!

    loved it

    xx

  • I must agree with Shaunpuffyrice all you jesus freaks have no right to judge. I did this with a group at a community theater this is pretty good. So go inpale yourselves jesus freaks.

  • What makes me laugh is that all the negative comments are from 13-16 year old kids who have done this show at bible camp or something lol....Perspective people - perspective....

  • @Shaunpuffyrice Shaun this is one of the reasons I don't usually read peoples' comments of high school/college/amateur stage productions, or solo/small ensemble stuff. So much of it is nit picky, irrelevant, or small-minded. "wah wah wah the tempo was too fast, the sopranos are overpowering, we did this in my junior high choir, blah blah blah." I hope some day these children can learn to appreciate art and other peoples' offerings without such drivel.

  • there is absultley no energey here...it atchely kinda looks pittafule..no affence.

  • Ah memories. Very nicely performed. I enjoyed that!

  • I think it sounds great....nice harmonies and the lead is good but the lack of staging and choreography bring the energy down

  • Is that lead vocalist David Bean from the Judy's? He sounds a lot like him and looks similar. I love that sound...

  • yeah my school did this... funny thing is ... this was the only song we couldn't remember the lyrics to

  • My college did this production for spring '07, and while I find this performance technically very good, it lacked the overall enthusiasm that I associate with the number normally. (after seeing the movie, listening to the soundtrack, and going to all the performances for our Theater Group.) I think that the vocal power simply wasn't there. Or it's just because I'm biased towards my friends... could be either.

  • yeah there is absolutely no energy....lol we doing this show right now and I can't even breathe after we finish this song cuz we are constantly moving same thing with bless the lord...lol I'm Joanne!

  • yeah, i agree, the solist had good energy, but everyone at parts almost seem like they sounded bored. There weren't any mistakes and part where they were making the weird noises was pretty good, but their movements could have been better. Mainly justing sinking with more emotion.

  • vocals sound good, and the soloist has good energy and a great voice, but wehre is the rest of the energy? yeah you're supposed to get up there and sing and dance, but how is supposed to be entertaining to the audience if you don't seem to be entertaining yourself?

  • it makes no sense the guy in a way sounds like a gurl (yea i know hes supposed 2) but i dont get the fact that theres a guy in a jersey on stage

  • the soloist has plent of energy but it looks like the rest of the cast is just singing with no energy or emotion

  • Your right now that i've watched it again there is clearly now energy

  • ya plus the blocking itself is very emotionless.

  • Where's the energy??

  • what are you talking about there is plenety of energy

  • It was o.k. The community theater I've worked with (backstage on Godspell, light and sound on Midsummer Nights Dream) did a lot more movement, and I'd say it was much better than this. Sorry if that offends you.

  • This is good but I think my scting group could do 10x better

  • ha ha i know right? thats kinda related to the whole thing that Godspell isnt completely about God. It's about a community... and people miss that. Good voice by the way... and good video!

  • It does kinda focus on the community but it is supposed to tell us that Jesus died on the cross for us and these are the events that lead up to it

  • question. why are there only 10 of you? tehre should be 12 + Jesus lol

  • seriously - you've never seen Godspell lol

  • umm there is only a cast of 10 in the original godspell...there's jesus, judas, jeffrey, gilmer, peggy, sonia, lamar, herb, joanne and robin. That's all. It is in the discretion of the director whether or not he wants a larger cast...mainly to use to fill voice parts for songs...it's a very physically demanding show for all 10 of the cast members...I am in it right now...playing the part of sonia...pretty good show
