@alexfnsmith11 Matt was the "spokesperson" of Weezer in their early years, which allowed Rivers to remain in a little anti-social bubble, wherein he had amazing inspiration to write the great songs that he had.

When Matt left, he had to take on that role, which lead to him beginning to write increasingly mainstream sounding songs.

Also, Matt provided freaking awesome falsetto harmonies.
