I love The Wire, but this scene was trying too hard to be profound. It is just a little too convenient that when D'Angelo is describing how the queen moves, Wallace chimes in about how that reminds him of Stringer. Would have been a much much better scene if they had been more subtle.
Nah man, the fact that they know they're talking in metaphor makes it way more realistic - if they didn't acknowledge that fact it would be like the show was trying to make this obvious metaphor, not the characters - now THAT would be unsubtle.
This scene is when I knew that The Wire was not going to be like any other show out there. Absolutely amazing. And so sad to watch knowing that none of them make it through the series.

@18ou Well they don't exactly analogize the knights or bishops (who are probably more like the muscle than pawns would be), but I think it's more than fair to argue the muscle are pawns too. Look at guys like Bey and Chris: they blindly obey any order, no matter how crazy, and then they take the fall (life in jail) when shit hits the fan, and they're out of the game.

What makes this scene so profound is a couple seasons later when Bodie...right before he gets killed, compares him and his boys to "them little bitches on the chess board" to Mcnulty. I love this show.

I love The Wire, but this scene was trying too hard to be profound. It is just a little too convenient that when D'Angelo is describing how the queen moves, Wallace chimes in about how that reminds him of Stringer. Would have been a much much better scene if they had been more subtle.

Nah man, the fact that they know they're talking in metaphor makes it way more realistic - if they didn't acknowledge that fact it would be like the show was trying to make this obvious metaphor, not the characters - now THAT would be unsubtle.
