yes, vince has destroyed a great thing.these days a 2 hour wrestling show has more talking than wrestling.maybe one day these matches will be put on dvd and sold to all the fans who love this type of wrestling.
I never understood why cage tag matches operated under traditional tag rules. IMO a cage tag match should be contested under texas tornado rules so they can pull out all the stops.
actually, if my memory is correct, this feud went on for another couple weeks. maybe a month or two longer. these two teams wrestled cage match after cage match after this match with steamboat/youngblood getting the wins. it eventually all came to an end with a stipulation being if kernodle and slaughter lost they could never wrestle as a tag team again. that's when slaughter left for the wwf.
My favorite part of this segment starts at 2:37, where you can hear David Crockett tell somebody, "We can't change shirts on him now. We'll have to remember that for next time." Pretty sure he's referring to the fact that Don wore a t-shirt to the ring reading, "Greensboro March 13." Even though the match was actually taking place on March 12. He may have been talking about the $1.44 white undershirt "special referee" Sandy Scott went to no expense to wear for such a big occasion, though.
@humanfly02 Your comment's right on the money! If you want to find out just how much McMahon has ruined pro wrestling, read Bret Hart's book. WWE is nothing but a joke. TNA is getting better though!
Steamboat and Youngblood were one of the greatest teams ever--so underrated...and Ricky Steamboat is maybe the greatest tag wrestler ever....he had so many reigns (5 with Jay Youngblood) with so many different partners and made whatever team he was on that good...thanks for this!
@miggy25 I'm with you, mostly. I gotta go with Arn Anderson as the greatest tag team wrestler ever. Dude had a credible title reign along side Paul fuckin' Roma for fuck's sake.
@slimmsayton thats probably the smartest comment ive read, arn anderson is 1 of the top 5 of all time and greatest tag partner ever...regardless of who what when where why or how he got it done
Remember, peoples attention span in those days wasnt nearly as short as it is today, so the action didnt have to in-your-face and instant... the anticipation of it all was exciting
It's all about audience conditioning. Honestly, it's TV that's caused the shortening of the matches. At least, IMO. If you have seen modern TV wrestling, like RAW, then you realize why matches are so short.
It's so entertaining that Slaughter and Kernodle came to the ring with the Rocky theme music.LOL! However, the coliseum was sold out on this night. They had to turn enough people away, enough to sell it out a second time! Jim Crockett was shocked at the turn out!
WOW, great post! I've heard about this match and card for years. Growing up in the Northeast back in the territory days we didn't get to see these matches and I only heard about it by reading the wrestling magazines.
Thanks for posting, now if you have the Ric Flair/Greg Valentine broadway from earlier in the night and can post that would be awesome.
This feud was taken all across North America at the time. I witnessed the Maple Leaf Garden version of this cage match in Toronto. Hard to imagine a time when you could use the same build-up in different markets and do the same blow-off matches in different cities. I was 11 years old at the time. First time I ever saw a cage match or blood in a match. Truthfully, I was terrified. I'll never forget it. Great post!
watch his match in toronto and that was when wrestling was wrestling love it

Kernodle kissing the World Title...knowing this would be the last time he would hold any belt of anykind. Sad...but true.

Real sad, considering he had yet to have title runs with Bob Orton Jr. and Ivan Koloff.

I was actually at this event. My mom took me, knowing if I didn't see what was possibly Steamboat/Youngblood's last match I'd be depressed forever.
Happy Valentines day mom! :0)
