Hi. I was wondering if you had a solution with keeping lens flair transition effects in the letterbox when going to another clips? I am using light transitions like flash, but the letterbox is caught up in the transitions from clip to clip. I would like the transition effects to stay within the field the letterbox has cropped, not the entire screen.

@wonderwall135 The only solution that comes to my mind is that you can make your own letterbox on photoshop (using the same pixels-cm) and putting it above all footage. So the two black sections will remain intact. Export it as a photoshop file and that's all.

For the transitions going over the widescreen i haven't been able to fined anything to fix that either , But what i have done which works for me quite del is making a letter box border in photoshop and saving it as a .png and have it on the top later , that works for me .. :P

@FamilyofSnipers an easier way is just to put your video into one compound clip then add the letter box to that compound.

Hey Matt,

To overcome the letterbox issue that you mentioned:

Put all your transitions in first then select all the clips you want to have the letterbox, right click and click on "new compound clip" (this will group all the clips into a compound) then add the letterbox effect to the compound clip. Hope this helps.

@MattsMacintosh in the inspection tab just drag the letterbox below the effect preset(lens flare etc.) and it will cover the lens flare! like layers in photoshop

I have a question though:

Is there any way you can apply one "effect" to ALL of the clips?? Like maybe if they were all selected, or even if you had a few selected?

The reason I ask is because some effects I would like the look to be consistent throughout my project, and applying the effect to each individual clip is a bit of a hassle.

@dimondlex Yep, you have it set to only use media in your storyline and not all available media. You can change it in preferences. If you need more help I've actually got a video showing how to fix it called "Final Cut X Tips and Tricks"

it is IMPOSSIBLE to use this program in Lion... also, a tip, if you don't want the transitions going over the letterbox, im pretty sure that if you select the clip and then do transform and take the top middle dot and drag it down for the letterbox effect, im pretty sure a transition won't ruin it. i've only played around with the program for a matter of minutes so...

A solution for you letterbox and transition problem. Add the transition to the clip first and then add the letterbox afterwards, that way when you add the letterbox it crops the whole clip and every thing thats attached to it, so there for the transition wont go out side of the letterbox.

Should Apple call it iMovie Pro instead of Final Cut Pro X? The interfaces are much like iMovie while Final Cut Pro interfaces are not. I've read many websites and seen many clips on YouTube about "Final Cut Pro X" causes so many confusion to many Final Cut Pro editors because they don't want to spend times, moneys, and effforts to learn and master the new software while they have been experiencing and mastering the Final Cut Pro for years. I hope Apple team will release a new Final Cut Pro 8.

There is a small box (i thought it was a dumb thing also) in the upper right hand corner of each clip in the timeline that you can show video animation. Here you can key frame opacity with the option key.

Would be interesting to hear your thoughts on Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 7, Strength and weakness of both apps, also pro user viewpoint and the average consumer view points.

From average consumer I can see this a much improve app, not sure of its limitations though for the pros, sure apple will improve the app over time though.

It stinks you couldn't just keyframe that original effect. Mostly everything in FCP 7 was keyframe-able (making up words) and is there a keyframe timeline at all? or anyway to view your keyframes?
