Surprised me at the movie how much the main character (Guy) looked like a young Tom Hanks. Look back at his old sitcom (can't remember the name) when he and his buddy (also in the movie) had to go drag to live in the girls dorm or something like that. Compare the main Guy to him in the TV show, eerie. He also gave Opie Cunningham's cousin a part. He was a disc jockey. Years before he was the cute kid in Gentle Ben TV show with a bear. Damn, I'm getting too nostalgic here.
Tom Hanks is a real great person. Too look at him you wouldn't think he would be into music. That thing you Do is a great movie. I wish Tom would make another movie about the 50's or 60's.
I totally identify with what he say's about the 70's I'm the same age he is and I turned 18 in 1974 - I thought it stunk then (totally hated polyester, never actually liked disco and couldn't name a single thing that should be resurected from the 70's). I was behind where I should have been - would have LOVED being 18 in 1964.
@CoachProc lucky you! I'm gonna turn 18 in a couple of months so i'm in the MTV generation. though i never liked Mtv and it's mindfuck shows. (Excuse my language). i grew up listening to the Stones & Queen on my dad's record player, & listening real Hip Hop from the late 80's. Everybody thinks i'm a weirdo kid, but i don't care. and i wish i was in the 60's too, I love Doo-Wop.
My five-year old daughter loves the go-go dancing that goes on behind The Wonders when they perform on TV. She's pumps her arms and wiggles just like they do. She even does the swim and nose dive. It's a gas-gas-gas. BTW, I had the Mickey Mantle rookie and MVP cards, and Roger Maris '61 ... went to England for a dozen or so years, came back ... all gone.
Not only is he nice and genuine, rich, brilliant, directs, writes, gives the best interviews, but also is a modern rennaissance man. Tom Hanks is Ben Franklins reincarnation.
Part of "That Thing You Do" was filmed around my location. And I actually got to meet Tom Hanks on set when I was a kid. My mom and I were driving through the area where they were filming, and he came to the window and shook my hand. True story
@VideoGuy18 They were trying to copy State Street in downtown Erie, PA... that's why they used Mercyhurst college and the Airport Lounge... as far as I can remember there was no Peterson's on State Street
I just finished watching this movie. The interviewer makes a point right at the end: "My God, does Rita look good (in the movie). He's not kidding. Damn, she's hot! Somebody post her scene.
apparently he is the nicest celebrity there is. They have rankings or something and he is the leader of the rankings for the most genuine all-around nicest celebrity/human on earth.
I saw this in the movies when it came out over 12 years ago when it came out,. i still love it today. so awesome. that's when I got all into rock n roll and started getting serious playing guitar!
Tom Hanks needs to be declared a national treasure.

Was this supposed to be an interview? Or a "you're awesome, but let me tell you how I'm awesome too" conversation.

That Thing You Do unsuccessfully brought the 60s back. Mad Men brought it back because of the sex appeal.

Where were they shooting? Was that town where the appliance store was real or a set?

They were shooting in downtown Orange. And yes, that is where the appliance store is.

"That Thing You Do!" was about a one-hit wonder rock and roll band and their rise to stardom in 1964.
Very good movie, well worth watching. Look for it on DVD, friend.
