  • that is soooooo awesome!! youre an expert

  • what is the fingering for the top note you play at 1minute 12sec

  • i feel like a complete idiot , cause i have no idea what he's talking about ...-_-!

  • @mar000m4 uh... do you play saxophone? you should know if you do.. dot dot dot

  • Nice tutorial!

  • how do you know what scales are appropriate to use for the chord when improvising? And what are you supposed to do with accidentals in the song's key signature when you're playing a scale with different accidentals in it (playing an e major scale, for example, when the song is in the key of d major- like a II-V-I progression)?

  • Remember when you could watch a video without having to sit through a commercial?

Remember when music videos were uploaded by users

Remember when all the info was to the right of the video?

Remember you could rate a video 1-5 stars?

Remember the famous yellow subscribe button?

Remember when the users controlled the site and now corporations?

    WE MISS THE OLD YOUTUBE!

Post this in every video and lets start a youtube revolution!

Thumbs up to keep at the top of the page!

  • @melkor65 nobody cares. If they did, we would not watch the videos. I longed to have negative stars for really shitty videos that contained even shittier music that seemed "cool" to the owner. Where the info is makes no difference if they do not put anything there to begin with. Commercials are for getting a drink, somthing to stuff in your face or going to the bathroom. Things change. Just play the game.

  • There is so much misinformation in the video and the comments. You are all doing more harm than good.

    Stop. Please.

  • great lessons

  • At first I was listening this at low volume and it sounded like you would've said "Hi. My name is Peter Erskine" and I was like wtf!

  • all scale have to go at the 9th

  • I SEE CHEEK PUFFINESS

  • @ShaunaTrout big deal?

  • @ShaunaTrout lol

  • your not suppost to puff ur checks

  • Brilliant lesson - very nicely explained - thanks!

  • i have that lig, it is amazing i highly recomend it to any sax player young or seasoned. The Ultimate Ligature. by Francouis Louis

  • @muzikmaka89 i have it too, it really plays nicely with my Meyer 5M

  • i like more blues :D

  • @nearcsexo no dude, it is ALTO sax

  • What a bad sound, guy!!!!!

  • this really helps. thx bro

  • Love the tone (and the tarpaulin)

  • I'm playin along wit my alto, and I just CANT BELIEVE how beneficial this has been in just 5 minutes!!!! THANK YOU SO MUCH!!

  • Wow, that is a great way to look at it.! It really does help. Thank you very much..!

  • Thanks a lot swid441.

Great videos and great web site.

  • hola un favor puedes mandarme partituras de jazz gracias..

  • hermano, entra al website sax on the web, ali encuentras gente que te manda lo que quieras,

  • R u using the pentatonic major escale of G?? I Love it!

Then u can explain the Blues scale? i can´t do that scale! i never remember how to play it! T.T

  • dude if you love playing that sax like i do then improv is flow

if you know how to do vib and make you sax scream then you know how to improv

    "Im improv is flow."

    Remember that

  • when you are messing about at the minute mark (approx.) you don't always play the pentatonic scale. Practice slowly to get it right before you post cack like this

  • he looks like seth rogan

  • You crack me up! Good work

  • Dude! Your sound sucks!

  • its just the quality of the vid

  • Lol

Not to be a critic, but you really should not puff your cheeks when you play.

  • so when your improvising, you don't play those two notes?

  • im not very good at improvising, but I wouldn't say don't the 4th and 7th. Its really up to you.

  • You can, if you want a certain idea. If I were playing over a dominant scale, I would at a little more focus on that 7th and resolve it to a root, directly or indirectly. So if, I'm the G pentatonic like the video, I might play a funky rhythm on the 7 (F) and then play longer G note to resolve the tension.

The fourth, at least in major (unless you play it up or down the scale to add a bit of tension like the video says), I would completely stay away from playing. It can be a nasty one.

  • i suggest renting before buying, incase you don't want to pursue learning it

  • how money cost a sax?

  • It's like buying a car. If you will buy expensive saxophone it will work very well but you have to practice every day if you want to achive great sound. I payed 3800€ for my saxophone (Alto saxophone-Selmer series III) it is very expensive but i play sax for 7 years so if you are a begginer i recommend you to buy cheap saxophone if you are a begginer that you don't waste money. Good luck buying a saxophone. By the way what kind of sax are you buying?

  • 1000 or more

  • Hi, I'm a beginner saxaphone player.

I am playing the alto saxaphone.

I have a few questions and would be very gretefull if you answer them. Do you recomend using earplugs? How many hours should I play a day. I play electric guitar should i quit to play sax. It hurts my ears to play what do I do? FunnyCorpNN Rate Suscribe Enjoy

  • Earplugs? No, no way you, your kidding. You didn't said you play woith earplugs did you? You should play ATLEAST 1 hour a day though 3 hours would be ideal. If your ears hurt your probably blowing it bad, your teacher should show you hot to play correctly. sorry my english isnt good enough i cant explain it without showing

  • @FunnyCorpNN DO NOT PLAY WITH EAR PLUGS!!! you need to be able to hear yourself. It is essential to practice as much as possible, but if you can't fit it into your schedule, don't worry. But always, ALWAYS LISTEN!!! I reccommend Charlie Parker, Gerald Albright, Eric Marienthal, Everette Harp, Michael Brecker, and Joshua Redman (even the last 2 or mainly tenor players, it will just really help to listen to them and study their playing.

    Good Luck!!!

  • I'm considering learning the sax, too.

  • Hey LatinSkinz what on earth are you on about? Lets see you post a vid you fucking nob! As far as explaining the pentatonic scale goes that was a good job!

  • I play the guitar for 20 years... I won't look for lessons 1 for guitar on you tube. But really, for a guy like me who have just begin the learn the sax, these lessons are EXTREMELY interesting. Again, many many thanks.

  • very useful lesson i never really checked out how to use the pentatonic one. thx

  • your good haha

i find the pentatonic asian sounding

  • i find the pentatonic very useful

  • you are so great!!!

  • thnx ill use that in jazz band!

  • it's probably a custom alto anyways...

  • thanks man, you tought me 4 or 5 new licks i can use in my high school jazz band (fellow tenor player) i also wanted to ask [know you were on alto, but i AM a tenor player] what kind of metal mouthpiece should I use for my tenor?

  • hey otto link 6 or 7 will be good

  • Or a Dukoff! Those are AMAZING

  • but they are really hard to controllll!!!

  • A cool, concise lesson and great tone on alto!

  • uhhhhhhhhhh...............

dude, this is definitely an alto.

altos have those "L" shaped necks (kinda)

and tenors have those "S" shaped necks

  • I usually base the type of saxophone by its size and alto saxophones are really small while tenors are a bit bigger. I know because I'm surrounded by alto players and I play tenor.

  • negatory dude, rasengangpinp is right on this one, that is an alto... the alto has a straight neck, like the bari... the tenor has the curvey one.... and the tenor goes about to your thigh... this one makes it to your hip...

  • true but, the neck doesn't tell you everything cuz some people have a custom Saxophone that doesn't have a curved neck....

  • @Musician0at0Work well I don't know what kind of neck straight tenors have...

  • @GamerDrifter but it's good to be able to tell what kind of saxophone it is by the sound

  • i guess you could say that

  • over what chords can you play the pentatonic scale?

  • Dude, he doesn't know.

  • you use it in the general key signature

  • Thanks for posting this video, I am a fellow Alto sax player (2nd year) and I currently play in the Ennis Junior High Band (which is internationally recognised) and you have inspired me to learn improv and jazz, thanks for making playing a lot more fun(not to say it isn't already fun.)

  • I've been playing Sax now for 7years or so (on and off) Just got my Saxophone upgraded from a Beginner's Century Alto Sax to an Italian imported Grassi Alto Saxophone, the sound is much more crisp then the old one and so much eaiser i find to play now. I've been doing classical mainly for my exams (on Saxophone, Oboe and Piano), but I love playing jazz/swing on the sax so this comes in really handy for me! Thanks.

  • im in 8th grade and in order to play the tenor for marching band next year i have to play tenor for jazz and everyone HAS to SOLO and im really shy and was never taut any scale except for the g on alto and i dont know how to solo so i doing a lot of research on google and trying to teach my self

  • You'll be just fine. =D

  • tinkerfan: 1st thing is get used to just playing. No sheet music or cd's/mp3's. Just play. Get comfortable with just making something up. Don't worry about right or wrong notes. NEXT: Definitely check out the "JAMEY AEBERSOLD" play along books. Start W/Volume 1! MAKE SURE TO READ WHAT HE SAYS ABOUT HOW TO PRACTICE IMPROVISING!! And most importantly YOU HAVE TO LISTEN TO JAZZ! (NO KENNY G!) You have to know what it's supposed to sound like before you can copy it. And learn your major scales!

  • can i find them at just any music store cheap?? or do i have to buy it for like $20.00

or can i just look on ebay...

  • Get the Aebersold play-a-long book/cd from his website, aebersold dotcom. It's $16. Volume 1 "Learn to play Jazz and Improvise" is the one to get. Yes you can find it at local music stores, but it might be a bit more expensive.

I don't know about ebay. You could try, but who knows what shape the book or cd will be in, ya know? In the big scheme of things, $20 isn't that expensive. Hell, a box of reeds cost more than that!

And remember, LEARN YOUR MAJOR SCALES, START LISTENING, Have FUN!

  • Use your ears.

Listen to some good jazz like the big band stuff. Try and play some of the notes that they play as you listen.

  • If your going to play tenor next year i would definetly recommend to listen to Dextor Gordon if your playing bebop or a slow ballad, and check out John Coltrane, Micheal Brecker, and Joshua Redman! Good luck on your solo.

  • Dexter*

  • This is BRILLIANT. I played the flute when I was a kid and learnt the piano to grade 8, but I'm lost past the blues scale with jazz. These lessons allow me to go over and over stuff in my own time and get my head around it all. A god-send for the self-sax-teacher! Thanks so much!

  • thanks, more please!! thanks

  • That was very informative. And I'm a trumpet player!

  • please do some more thanks

  • Elaborate but concise.

    Love it!

  • thanks, it is very helpful
