  • this is just great

  • Hello Randy - Great info on how to remote operation. By the way: could you give a recommendation for a good base station VHF rig you you buy yourself for weak signal work? I was thinking about the Kenwood TR-751A or Icom 251. The Ten Tec TT526 gets rave reviews but it's not cheap.. I like older gear but looking for value in used,

  • @zappatx Another one to look for a is an FT-736. Icom has the new 4100 or something, pricey..

  • k7age is there any free pc software where i can hear scanner frequincies? ham. etc?

basically like a hand held scanner but receiving though pc with nothing but my pc...

  • @IRONMAIDENFAN2006 Dig around at Radio Reference for on-line scanners

  • @IRONMAIDENFAN2006

try HAM RADIO DELUX - they have a software defined radio program free for download that you can link into online radios, or try global tuners (they have online recivers too) or WebSDR (ends with a . org) which just runs in java and has recivers all over the world.

  • i like videos like this with plenty and simple info.is simple homes!(951)

  • why not just use windows remote desktop?

  • Or you could just use team view and load a copy on a usb drive for remote use, NARF... You talk way to much and make your life complicated when you don't have to... You might as well just loaded another copy of sam on a laptop instead of doing all this junk...

  • you cant just use windows remote desktop the ip address changes.

  • @Communications86 Probably. Knowing the PC's address is a challenge, could run static IP address locally. Logmein makes the management of this easy. Nothing to setup.

  • this is too cool! I wash my grandpa had introduced me earlier!!!!

  • Hey Randy. Thanks for putting in the work to post these videos. I know it's a lot of work and you still do it. True Ham spirit, keep it up. 73

  • how did you get the ree logme in to send audio thought only the paid version did this

  • @BlackGoldEstates I use skype for the audio.

  • @K7AGE

    great video randy

  • @K7AGE thanks for this i am looking to do this myself no as my shackis at my business but want to work it from hime thanks again great videos randy

  • @K7AGE great videos randy working on this with my ft857

  • @BlackGoldEstates I use Skype for the audio.

  • Hello. First let me tell you thanks for the vids. They are very helpfull. Had a question for you. I have set everything up. I can control my radio but how do I set up the skype connection. Im a little confused on that. I would appreciate any help on that. Thanks again.

  • You need two skype accounts. Set the radio pc to auto answer to you remote radio.

  • Boo hoo it don't work

  • Another idea is to operate the station remotely from your car using a laptop and aircard!

  • The new logmein now supports the wake on lan, if your bios supports it, so that I do not have to use the remote power switch to turn on the pc. It works great.

  • N7ARZ..what kind of AC power switch are you using Randy? I have the same setup as you do, and dont want to leave rig on all the time.

  • Can i listen your radio only by internet or by the FM waves too ?

  • Sorry, no. I keep that skype account closed just for me to use the radio. Randy

  • I have several Brans new some used Motorola MX 330 UHF radios does any one know change the frequency. Does any one know how to retune the frequency cans in the Motorola MT500?

  • When do I need to give a frequency cordnator a call up for his services?

  • Is there another software you could use in order to connect bysides skype? skype only allows you to connect up to five at one given time...

  • The Relavance of Ham Radio becomes clear in times of natural or man made disasters. Remember 9/11, when those towers went down, so did a lot of comm. networks, so guess who actually quite effectively filled the void first? How will you communicate when the power goes out or cable/Landline fails, an do'nt think it ca'nt happen,, become self-sufficient, be prepared, it could save you an yours life, Take care, N8XMB

  • Wise words! Randy

  • Really great video. I use similar software called TightVNC. Cool beard!

  • What is wrong with you dumbass? Be nice to this man! He works hard for his videos. And if you don't like that then you can just suck mine, buddy.

  • I can't say as much as I'm a ham but I find your videos soothing as if I were hanging out with a real-time friend.

It would be interesting for me to hear a few words from you about the relevance of hamming in the age of the internet and skype. It is obviously a satisfying hobby and brings out the best in people, but why ham? why now? would be a really interesting thing for me to learn.

  • Ham radio is a little like being off the grid. We can communicate in many different modes without being connected using paid services. Lots of experimenting. I was making phone calls from my walkie talkie 30 years ago before cell phone were even a dream. It is challenge to build a station and to make it work, then see how far you can work. There isn't much of a challenge to working someone 6000 miles away with skype, which I also do. The challenge is to get more people interested.

  • could you tell me what radio software you use to broadcast? please

  • I use skype for the audio link between the computers. Randy

  • Brilliant!

    G7LNK :-)

  • lol nice job i have one question how can i hook my yeasu 2800 up to my computer to do that or what kind of radios can do it

  • For the audio, a sound card interface. I don't know if the 2800 allows for remote control. Randy

  • juemadre viejo mañoso!!!! q vaina tan arrecha!!! jejejeje congratulations!!!

  • that is probably the coolest setup I've seen so far

    5*s

  • I'd love to do this to my setup. I have a question. You demo'ed RTTY and PSK. Since your soundcard is hooked up to your rig for that, how does Skype access the soundcard?

    73 de Terry KK6T

  • The radio has the soundcard interfaced. Skype is set to use the line in instead of the mic. The line out is connected to the radio's mic through the soundcard. The skype on the radio pc has its own account. Skype is set to auto answer to contacts which are in its list, which are my other computers. Randy

  • vnc is a good multi-host remote desktop program also.

  • How do you get the audio to the radio are you using like Rigblaster or something or will the connection from the computer to the radio make the audio work.

  • Yes

  • Randy,

Have success with the remote setup, trying it at home. I am using Skype with TrxManager and can hear the audio and control my 756Pro just fine. I am having some problems with the transmit. Using a logitec headset, it checks out ok with Skype test, but when I select transmit on the radio, I see little or no deflection of my alc. Any ideas??

    Rich N0CVW

  • You need a sound card type of interface to the radio from the computer. There may also be PTT issues to make sure the computer's audio is getting into the radio when TRX keys the radio through the serial port. Randy

  • wow, this is almost like using pcanywhere for the computer. Neat stuff Randy, great informative video.

  • Thanks Randy,

I am in the process of downloading and installing the programs you mentioned in the video to set up remote capabilities. I already have trx manager and need to experiment more with it to see what all it does.

I am mainly a CW person, how would I do that via a remote hookup??? Have you tested that out yet?

I look forward to viewing all of your posted videos and future ones.

  • CW may be more of a problem with the latency of the connection. I'm not a CW guy, so the latency of CW was not a concern for me. Randy

  • Randy, You sure don't miss much! 73's, Mike, WB8CXO

  • hi how do you set up the skype section to work with your radio??? and be able to use skype to tx & rx ?

  • You need two skype accounts, one for each computer. On the radio computer set skype to auto answer calls from contacts in contact list. Configure skype for line in/out along with sound card interface to radio. Randy

  • how can you uploada a 12 min Video ???

  • Director account allows for longer videos. Randy

  • hello there my name is doug and i have been doing this for like 2 years now using my schools internet and my computer at home i use vnc viewer for remote desktop and a program called teamspeak that is running on my own server so i connect to that and thats my audio.i want to be able to use my ic 706mk2g so that i could go to other freq's instead of staying on one and leaving it at home on lock.

  • Hallo and thank you again for this very nice idea.

After I saw you video I started to set up a similar system. In my shack I have a TS570 controlled by Ham Radio Deluxe, and the Windows-PC that is remote-controlled by realVNC, is connected through a linuxserver as a gateway to the internet. It works really nice and it makes me able to control my shortwave trx from my home computer (I putted my "shack" in my office in my small company building.)

so thanks and greetings from Germany

    Fabian

  • Very good on getting your remote setup and running. Randy

  • wow very very nice there! :) Can I do that with my yaesu 2800? :)

  • I'm not sure. The TS-2000 allows control of just about every radio function through the serial port. TRX-Manager provides control of all of these functions. I don't know if this amount of control is available with you radio. Randy

  • Oh :( Got to start saving money for that radio then :P and it looks like a sweeet radio :), but isn't it like $800+? :(

  • Very nice video, Randy. I've enjoyed several of your videos so far. Keep up the good work. I plan to set up my shack for remote ops in the near future. I may have some questions for you then! Rick, K6RJ

  • Hi there I have just been watchng great videos you have posted, I have just aquired a AOR 1500

it was my scanner purchased in uk many years ago, i took the set to Aor uk and it was re-tuned and calibrated, it was then put in a box all them years ago, 1990,s and life moved on, I am now taking interest again in radio, are there any good frequeny guides and websites i could find info for the shortwave

  • Welcome and hope you will have some fun getting back on the air. I am not familiar with any shortwave freq list sites, but google away and find some. Randy

  • Very good video. I think I may try that. It would be nice to be able to use the rig while away from home.

  • It is nice to listen to the local repeaters while away from home! Randy

  • nice video

  • Amazing! I bought a TS-2000 last week and have a new fancy laptop, so will have to give this a try !

    Andy K3UK

  • Also checkout the TRX-Manager video. Randy

  • I will definately have to play with this when I get home... Thanks

  • Very cool Randy. You were about 75 miles from my home QTH. The remote thing is very cool. I might consider trying something like that from the road once I get a radio set up at the house. My net connections are sometimes shaky though as I use wifi in most truckstops and theres usually 100 other drivers usuing the same system. lots of lag

  • Nice video, Randy. I use HRD and the built in server along with Skype. Tried IP-Sound and it was to unreliable. Along with the concern of the radio locking up in transmit, I am concerned about the computer locking up and not being able to reboot and gain control again. I lost control once and had to wait until I got home to reboot. Any ideas? What do you do if your home computer locks up?

    73, Carl W8KRF

  • Carl, well that is a concern. I try to keep the radio computer mainly for radio operation. I use another computer for general email and surfing. Hopefully the radio computer doesn't get junk that we all seem to get over time. I am looking for a good way to turn the power on and off over the internet. If anyone has some ideas, please let me know. Randy

  • Good Video Randy! I do something similar with a FT1000MP Field, Ham Radio Deluxe, and Skype here around the house. My biggest fear with the setup is if I was far away from it, is if the radio should some how lock up and stay keyed down. Usually when I am done with it, I "park" the radio outside the ham bands where transmit is locked out. (in case something happens its not transmitting).

  • I thought of that too. The Kenwood has a time out timer, I should set it! Randy

  • Hi Randy - truely fascinating how technology has come. Don't think my boss will allow me to operate my home gear from my work station at the salt mine ! Still, its great to see how its done. Thanks and 73s,

James (G0SDB) South Godstone, Surrey, England

  • Sure, just keep a spreadsheet open in the background and switch to it when he gets close by. - Randy

  • The radio computer's sound card is interfaced to the radio's input and output to be the audio source and destination for skype.

  • Hi Randy,

I have a TS-2000 and would like to set it up for remote operation. I have control with "logmein".

Not sure how the radio's input & output is interfaced with the sound card? Is this in the setup of "Skype"? Thanks for any info you can provide. Paul N1RXE

  • A simple sound card interface will work. Randy

  • I have two different skype accounts, one for each computer. Skype is configured on the radio computer to automatically answer, but only to contacts that are in its list. Keep up the work and get our license and join us on the air. Randy

  • Thats great! . iv been trying to get my license here in Newfoundland but so far....Zip . how did you use skype to send and recieve the audio ?

  • I have the sound card on the computer interfaced to the radio. Randy

  • Sorry for the shaky pictures, my tripod was at home. Randy
