It's all up to the interpretation from the designer to make a werewolf/lycan a biped or a quadruped, more wolf-like or human-like. It's only the transformation times that set them apart. One can change of free will and retain their intellect, the other has to suffer the curse of being forcibly transformed into a bloodthirsty, ravenous monster every full moon (An American Werewolf is the best example).

The werewolf in An American Werewolf in London(1:33) will probably never be topped, that creature is just fright incarnate, like a huge rabid dog from hell. Not a single cgi-wizard has been able to create a more terrifying werewolf than that to date.

Okay, the werewolves in Dog Soldiers were great, but I think there's two key elements, three actually, that made the movie great:

Sam, the collie, at the end

The woman's remark about "You think they're all bitches. Well, I'm the real deal." Because female dogs are bitches, and *spoiler* she's a werewolf.

And Spoon. SPOON made the movie great. It takes balls, nads, a good strong bone bulge to face up to a werewolf like that, spit in the jaw. Stab it repeatedly, show no fear.

Most people educated in the matter believe twilight wolf creatures are really "skin-walkers" or native Americans with the ability to turn into a specific animal. This being a wolf.
