It wasn't that-- Brent Spiner is a great actor. Everyone who's talked about him said that he brought something different to the table when playing Data. He wasn't just an android, he put a human side in him, that made him seem like he could be human even if he really wasn't. A curiosity. The point was to make Data more than just a machine, and Spiner pulled it off perfectly.

I can't speak to Spiner's intellect, but dragoon definitely has a point. Our development potential, as skin-wrapped blood-sacks is inherently limited. AI is not bound like we are. lrn2 technological singularity

The fact of the matter is, however, that Data was designed to emulate humanity. As such, his human affectations are not Spiner's doing, but come from the writers.

Spiner aside [I do not know him, have not met him, so I cannot say what kind of person he actually is], Dr Soong designed Data to want to become more human. His not wanting to be merely a machine IS part of his parameters. It was part of Data's character from the very beginning [it is how he intriduces himself to Riker], and it was only logical, as the series progressed, that Data become more and more human.

You might not care six months later, but just thought I'd add my two cents. :)

Love this episode, he is ever still so polite even when dying really, & this other one, playing 'Frankenstein' to cure the ungrateful populace, that is so tragic! All the while bloody Troi gets her undeserved promotion no less over him, when he saved a whole damned community again, where's the justice in that?! I loved the ep "Thine Own Self" XD It was so sad. But I loved it when he showed that doctor/teacher lady his smarts.

I also liked "Time's Arrow" That was fun. Oh, and I just rewatched "The Naked Now" recently XD Wesley: "It's like a game. How fast you can do it."

lmao, I just watched that episode again! XD Yeah, he was awesome. it really is hard to believe he has no emotions. he looked so hurt when picard left his concert. I felt like strangling Gashovan though.

Lore's pretty cool, but really, I cursed at him a few times for what he did to Data XD (when he kicked him those few times in Datalore and the whole Descent thing) then I felt sorry for him in the ep Brothers. XP I still prefer Data, he's like a naive little kid, yet smart and so strong.

Of course I prefer Data for the simple reason that he is the good the innocent & pure soul we feel for when he can't but really can, I love Lore for the reason it's the same guy playing him obviously, as Spiner is pretty awesome portraying these characters by mere change of expression or tone of voive, he's simply a genius to be poor Data & bad Lore, We feel what he portrays for us - that's pretty amazing, & he can sing & dance & whatnot else besides...

Spiner's amazing. He has talent. First ep I saw was the Quality of Life, and the him not wanting to be alone in the world suckered me in. XD Data just has a lot of depth. He plays music, dances, sings, paints, acts. I love his expressions too. One eyebrow always seems to be raised. Ha. It's too bad Lore couldn't be fixed. He had a lot of potential and personality. They should've had more eps with him in it. But it's hard to do much with the evil twin thing.
