It's like watching a car crash and seeing beautiful fireworks when it happens. I don't think it's drug induced, either. i think it is a trance state or an altered state of conciousness. Just a theory, I was around when they first came out. few got them in the 70's. I listened. Still do.

It's Dada-inspired, what the fuck do you expect? It's supposed to offend you, it's supposed to challenge your notion of what music and art really is, etc. TG is a great performance group because they truly capture the Dadaist spirit, and many of their songs are more meaningful than mainstream garbage.
