A wonderful piece with oriental percussion. Its difficulty is rather underrated, as it has complex runs for woodwinds. It is, at the very least, medium-hard, covering a large range, requiring high technical skills, emotional expression (especially during the oboe solo), and stamina (the woodwind runs on the last page are killers). Overall, this is an exciting piece that shows mastery and raw emotion, that with greater recognition, would surely put its author among the greats of music.
@captainmuon Haha, I played this a few years ago and our director had a flute play that solo instead because our oboe player was terrible :/ but you gotta admit that's kinda funny haha
I miss playing this song. I either would played the 1st clarinet or 2nd clarinet part pending the day. The horn parts are the best. However the runs at the end are murder (especially for the winds). This ended up being one of our favorite songs to play in band.
Beautiful this song, the oboe player is fantastic and the french horn players are too . I play this music too in my band . My instrument(french horn) it can be heard in 3:45
Lincoln College Prep, Missouri, playin this!! One of tha best high school bands in AMERICA! We goin to China for tha 2011 American Festival ( invitation ). Not to mention tha fact that we went to Carnegie Hall 2 years ( invitation ). Check us out!
oh god i played this my freshman year of highschool and literally the last 2 pages where 16th not runs, while i loved it, it made me cry in the beginning lol
I love this piece. Especially the oboe and french horn duet in the middle. Love the clarinets doing eights during that part too. Makes a great harmony, kind of sad, but really preeeetty.
This song is EPIC I played it last year at Furman Band and Orchestra Camp and I was first bassoon in the symphonic band and 3 in the wind ensemble and chosen for the Furman woodwind quintet. I just wish the bassoon part was as epic as everybody elses...
@neferiel I went to north branch and when I was in tenth grade our symphonic band played this. I loved the story behind the music and that beginning epic part was just SOOOO fun to play. trumpets for the win by the way...
The clarinet from 7:11 on is freaking ridiculous! I had to play this in band last year, and its is an entire page filled completely with runs. It was so fun though.
I played this in my high school band for the Heritage festival in 2006. I play flute and this was absolutely the most difficult song to play... The woodwind part is ridiculous!! I could not play it at the speed I was supposed to.. Haha now I want to pick up my flute and play it till I get it!!
I'm playing the horn part of this for the Heritage Festival THIS spring! It's gonna be in Texas for us this year. I'm the only horn for Apple Valley High this year, and the tenors in our band wont play the horn cues (thank God!) so I play the horn melody alone.
@SoraRoxasmon you lucky bastard... we played this in our marching show TWO years ago, and i still love this... I play horn too, and i wish we wouldve played the actual music, not some weird interpretation....
@andremanfeng The Oboe soli is written in in the first flute part though. I think its meant to be played by the flute soloist if the oboe sucks or if there is no oboe.
@allen20011 That'd be AWESOME, because it was my solo, and I was great at it, but my band director decided he wanted it on a reeded instrument, and gave it to soprano sax... Which I guess sounds cool. But it sounds SO MUCH PRETTIER ON FLUTE.
@andremanfeng The Oboe soli is written in in the first flute part though. I think its meant to be played by the flute soloist if the oboe sucks or if there is no oboe.
I played this in the anual all-county festival with like seniors. It was ausome!!! This was our favorite song!! But indeed, the runs are super hard. Hehe, but I play the Tenor sax, so I didn't have to worry! ^_^ Poor flutes though. The oboe soloist was very jumpy though. Every year it seems the oboe solo (always seems to be a female) doesn't do good. Awell, it's still a magnificent piece!
This piece is fun to play. We are playing this for our Spring Concert. I have to solo with the bassoon in the middle section just before the oboe. It was a challenging song to learn at first but we figured it out and it sounds awesome!

A young man is warped through time iinto ancient Persia. He happens to become entranced with a beautiful noble maiden, the maiden saying she recognized him, as if from another place in time.
