Detroit Diesel (and Allison transmission) are both GM products! I am amazed at all of the ford and dodge people who try to say that GM doesn't or never has built their own diesel engines.
this would power a nice small tug in the 30-35 ft range..i believe the 6v-53 is about 212 hp nat. aspirated..may i ask how i set up my cat diesel to run it as you have done?? its a cat 4600 marine engine 75 hp..any info on starting it up would be it great help...never started a running take out before...
It would be bottomed out at the front. These motors are made with thick steel. One guy on U tube has a four cylinder 2 stroke Detroit in a 3/4ton campers special GMC and he says hes got too much weight on the nose and handles poorly in winter.
Detroits are 2-stroke designs, so the RPM is the same but sounds twice as fast. Some like it, some don't... personally I would never own something so loud.
@VDZRIDER not that high actually. they sound so high revving because they are 2 strokes. So take a four stroke and compare it to this... this engine will sound twice as fast as the four stroke even thought is at the same rpm.
Next thing you need to do is buy an old fire truck (preferably a late 1960's-early 1970's vintage Seagrave or American LaFrance-custom chassis) and drop that sucker in it unless it already has a 6V-53. I would say about half of new fire apparatus production during that period has 6V-53's in them. 6-71's gained in popularity about 1973 or so after Mr. Nader downgraded the horsepower in all diesels due to the Arab Oil Embargo.
I will - should have a video up soon of the smoke generator working. Also want to get a new flywheel on it so it doesn't make that metal on metal sound anymore...

How much would an engine like this weigh round about

Do they burn tons of fuel compared to a 4-stroke motor? That thing sounds like its sucking down fuel.

how high do these diesels rev?
VDZRIDER 2 years ago
Best torque range is around 1800-2000; max RPM is around 2500-2800 depending on the detroit.

wow i knew it'd be low cuz its a diesel but it sounds really fast haha
