  • @Anothernumber I think this is an Electro-Harmonix/ Sovtek Small Stone phase shifter.

  • one of the most amazing song , for me

  • how do they make the yoyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyoyo noise!!!!!!!! I need to know

  • @Anotherrnumber A bit late respond... but i think Thurston uses Ludwig Phase II Guitar Synthesizer for that sound

  • @Anotherrnumber there's also an effect like a wah wah, but instead makes the ya ya sound and is aptly named, 'the ya-ya'

  • woo-hoo! gardena! represent! minute 2:26

  • R.I.P. Kim and Thurston's marriage

  • this song just has an emotion that runs through it that's infectious! If you can't feel it you're probably dead

  • YOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOOYOYYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYOYO

  • The best Sonic Youth song ever!

  • I still remember the night this video popped up on 120 minutes. Without a doubt one of the finest songs of this or any day. It dreamy pacing makes me miss being a music addicted high schooler.

  • best use of a phaser I've ever heard

  • This takes me baaack. I used to listen to this song religiously in 7th grade and wore the cassette tape out heh.

  • Why the fuck are you guys even bringing up the name 'Beiber' and 'Gaga' on this page? Have some respect for the Sonic Fucking Youth and leave those names out.

  • @southparkster93 That's fascism. Fascism ain't no cool. You are not cool.

  • @southparkster93 Thurston, Kim, Perry, Kim, Lou, John, Willie, Warren, Margot, Janis, Ian (which one;)?), Paul, Frank...to try and negate the Beiber and Gaga :)..how many more to blot them from existence...?

  • @southparkster93

I agree 100% (get it) but saying "the sonic youth" sounds like something my mom would say.

  • Comment removed

  • @southparkster93 Justin Bieber's hair looks like Thurston Moore's

  • @godlytroller your a tool

  • @godlytroller your a tool

  • @godlytroller your name is godlytroller. your argument is invalid

  • @MyShurikenInYour

If it's invalid, then you would not reply. If you replied, then I did something right. Go to Starbuck and listen to your crappy music.

  • @godlytroller Just out of interest when you looked up this band did you intend to leave a hating comment or were you curious about them? Enlighten me!

  • @Hypact1v3

I'm sorry if my youtube name couldn't be anymore obvious to you. But yeah, this band sucks. This is why many people like Justin Bieber. Nobody wants to listen to his lame hipster crap.

  • @godlytroller please just never evam talk again...

  • @funny2xUS

I did not talk at all you hipster idiot. I typed. You fail along with this music.

  • @godlytroller Justin Bieber?... Really?

  • essa musica é foda =)

  • Wonder who disliked this one? My question is why did they listen in the first place.

  • @willbaboon ... Just because you are the smartest of the retarded, you are still a fn retard. Please go play in traffic.

  • this song is like a movie

  • awesome stuff

  • @willbaboonRacist? I dont think i could be considered racist just because i said he is not brown like crap. I do apologize if i offended you with my grammatical errors and lack of intellectual response to your close minded opinion. Sonic Youth is obviously not for everyone.

  • Before it was beiber now it's kurt, courtney and billy..

There all respected artists leave them alone I think we should go back to beiber and gaga.

  • This song is still geat and it will always be no matter how many times i listen to it!!!!!

  • kurt cobain looks up to sonic youth.....that say's it all.....!

  • @marcusacuse

Everybody worth listening to looks up to Sonic Youth :)

  • best song ever!

  • @willbaboon Obvious troll is....wait you're not trolling, are you?

  • @George18264 no just saying that this guy is complete shit... was told to check it out

  • @willbaboon Well if he is so terrible how about we hear your rendition of this song?

  • @souperdude123 well if you were half intelligent you would know the reason I don't post videos of myself singing is because I can't, but just because i can't doesn't mean I can't comment on other people's attempts. For example if my friend tried speaking dutch, I myself can't speak it, however I would most likely be able to tell if he was speaking it badly and therefore have the right to comment without being good at dutch myself... think before you speak young man

  • @willbaboon crap, no, crap is brown and this guy is white! he sings to his souls pleasure as you ears judge like SImon Cowell! This song was men t to sound like such otherwise he'd be some washed up "professional" singer, whatever that means..Let your friend know to get himself friends who know and can appreciate all kinds of SOund waves, not just the ones with butterfly wings!!!!!!

  • @VALTRONICA When you can write an intelligible post, I'll come back and read it, at the moment you sound like someone on Acid trying to argue a point... whats the colour of crap got to do with anything, by stating that this guy is white and not the colour of crap you're being out and out racist. Seriously don't take part if you can't keep up.

  • this song really change my life Thank you sonic people(band and fans)

  • 16 people gave this a thumbs down? What's wrong with you fucks?

  • @newmanfrigan there are idiots out there thats whats wrong. Don't worry we know what the f**k we are talking about. Great song, and I've been around the block to know what a good song sounds like and so do you.

  • sonic yputh remembers me sometimes the cure...

  • Awww, I saw them play this live the same year in Ohio. They dedicated it to Kim Deal that night. Best 20 minutes of my life man! They also played Disappearer and Lee sang. Swoon! <3

  • Every full moon, like today, this song lingers in my mind throughout the day. It strikes a chord in my heart and makes me feel sad, happy and compassionate all at the same time.

  • It's amazing, the Youth are as vital as ever. They are not perfect but they've put out at least 2 great records in the 80s, the 90s and the 00s. It's a new decade and here's hoping they can keep on keeping on.

  • best band... ever!

  • i wish i was there. BUT ALAS!!! I WASNT EVEN BORN!!! oh the pain of being a snot nosed youth.

  • This is just so intoxicating.

  • someone has the link for the full version? thanks in advance.

  • "you better watch yourself when you jump into because the mirror gonna steal your soul" very very very deep&beatiful. i will still listen those guys 4ever

  • my sluppy mind unravelled once when i heard them. i had a swim in the diamond sea once too, it was boring, i tapered off at 53.25 drunk on hedge wines and bramble pie.

  • I think the "polesmoker" and trashtalking on here is pretty funny. It's interesting to see how rough and silly people are getting through the years. I'm 31, and I thought we were stupid and rude. Half of the teens that I know now can barely read or write a sentence.

  • I know, right? And they are the ones that are the most opinionated and hateful. Funnily enough - they are also the quickest to throw out words like idiot, moron, stupid - or for the really dumb ones (sic) fagit.

  • "Tearjerker" by the Peppers was for Kurt. Pearl Jam wrote a song for Layne Staley. I think "Immortality" may just be about death in general. Kim Gordon has gone on record about Cobain's friendship, and her feelings that he was almost like a surrogate son for her and Thurston. Sonic Youth was responsible for Nirvana's signing to Geffen.

  • nice:)

  • Cobain was a pole smoker. They were great when I was 16 but the guy was a massive cunt to do what he did. Not every song from this period has to be about him.

  • bless you for using the term pole smoker.

  • @TheWickerMan1981 I still don't belive he offed himself, three times the lethal dose of heroine and he was still able to put away all the paraphenillia get the gun out of the bag level it and shoot himself. He did not baracade himself in the room and he was quoted as being quite scared around the time not depressed.

  • Well - when you do as much as he did it takes more to mess you up. It's just like drinking alcohol - I can put away more than I did when I first started and still not have the same effect.

  • lol yeah everything that came out after cobain died is a tribute lol please people get your pets fixed

  • oh for crying out loud...why do you cobain fanboys think that EVERYTHING is about that overrated fool? it probably has nothing to do with him. thurston has more important things on his mind. like how much better he is than kurt cobain!!

  • Your a douche bag ROFL

  • if this song is for kurt, it's one of the prettiest tributes i've heard. whateve the case, i think this is one of their best songs...gives me chills.

  • i think this song might be about cobain. "washing machine" came out immediately after his death, and sonic youth have said that a few songs on the record were about their friend.

  • junkie's promise is about cobain. I'm not sure what in Diamond Sea makes you think it's about Cobain. I'm not saying it isn't, but I don't see anything that suggests it is

  • totally aggreed. junkie's promise is for sure one of the songs made for him. But diamond sea isn't. I still dunno about that immortality song by Pearl Jam, it's been said it's for cb...Have you heard anything about that?

  • Eddie Vedder explicitly said that Immortality was not about Cobain. But all those bands, friends or not, would have been impacted by his death. Is it possible that some of those songs dealt with feelings and thoughts emerging from the death

  • I just know that these guys were very close friends of Kurt, and that they were devastated by his fall and death. It's an epic song at a time where Kim and Thurston were dealing with the death of a friend and pupil. It's always open to interpretation. I think about being 14 again when I hear it. I think it's more about losing, loving, and getting old than it is about any particular person. But I am sure that losing their friend had a devastating effect on the band's mood and effected them.

  • A friend was just talking about connecting with the spiritual realms of music. This is a good example!

  • You must be a fucking nihilist.

  • this is like beer for Homer... and for me

  • Comment removed

  • if you listen to all 19+ minutes of this song your life unravels before you.

  • Really? Because when I listen to it all everything comes to together and is perfect.

  • Then that's good. Thats why this song is great, you can conclude anything, except for the middle, because thats where all the chaos presides. BUt still, it helps listening.

  • i dont even know if thats true, but that just sounds fucking cool

  • @pjfislord

    I totally agree with you!

  • @pjfislord 19? Wait until you get to the 26 minute version...

  • @George18264 I have the album version at 19:36. Can you show me the 26 minute version? I'm really anxious now.

  • @pjfislord They released two versions: The 19:36 version is on Washing Machine, but there's a 25:49 version on The Destroyed Room: b-sides and rarities. It's a lot more...experimental, than their other albums. You can get it off amazon, or, of course, torrent it.

  • @George18264 well now I have a reason to stea.... buy it.

  • who cares how old u are

we are all the same age, because at some point we will all be dead

so just listen and let time fade by

  • what u said was really dumb

  • @parkrat1313 - wow. I think I love you. For the moment, anyway. ;)

  • @parkrat1313 very well said

  • it's not really an old thing. it's a cool thing. you can turn younger people onto this beautiful music that some of the shit now cant possibly touch. the fact that you're still diggin on it says that you are not growing old. you're just growing. and you're helping others to grow as well. man, that sounded like some hippy bullshit. LOL. If still listening to this helps me hang on to my youth by my finger tippy tips, i'm game.

  • brings back memories damm i refuse to say im old

  • it does the same for me hehe

  • Love this one!

Ever considered the bad situation that you are to old to rock'n roll and to young to die? You may think twise and think about that and feel that it may be that way but good, not bad.

I don't wana be a baby in a man's body and to connect to reality im not. If my body becomes old and/or problematic i would say a rebirth in a new body would be nice.

  • sonic youth members are now in their 50s, i guess even older. you can never be to old to rock, if you still have the spirit in you

  • im OLD. my next door neigbour just asked who this NEW band was LOL and hes 23

  • you should've STABBED this guy. what a douche.

  • I ow the feeling. I remember watching this on JBTV in Chicago back in 1995. I was my mid-twenties :-) Guess I better start checking out nursing homes. lol!

  • excelente !!!

  • cuantos tramontes ví escuchando a esta canción...ahhhhh

  • What the hell does the previous comment mean - was he deprived of oxygen at birth. Sonic Youth are the coolest band on the planet.
