I am concerned that above average students are probably bored, resentful & lazy. Certainly, with the wealth of different paper, automated computer & video technologies available today, we can develop universally available teaching resources that detect each child's ability in EACH subject helping 2 encourage & inspire them to improve their abilities in each subject separately no matter what level at which they may be currently performing, while leaving teachers time to address individual needs.
I graduated high school with a few folks who could not read. (But they were very good in athletics!) So, I can see real value in standardized testing but it should be used as a feedback mechanism for the teachers rather than being used punitively. Explain the tests to the teachers, then base their $ bonuses on how well their classes do on the tests, & they might be creative enough to find or create better teaching resources for the students. Deficiency motivation is usually counterproductive!
As someone pursuing a teaching degree all I can say is a standardized test proves pretty much nothing. I also speak as someone who took all kinds of standardized tests throughout school and I can tell you they don't give any indication of a students real ability.
I hate standardized testing I never learned anything from those stupid ISTEP tests when I was in school. It was about 2 weeks worth of wasted time imo.
NCLB won't work. America still lags behind compared to the rest of the world. Other countries excel in many school subjects. Tougher learning makes for better prepared students before they go out into the world.
I think what will most benefit kids is lower class numbers and one on one tuition. I think the government should pour most of its resources into education, not stimulus packages etc.
Pres. Obama has just increased funding for NCLB, and his secretary of education, Arme Duncan (a former basketball player) has close business ties to a venture capitalist who runs privatized charter schools.
Obama is continuing the Bush Era privatization of our public schools. Imagine what his healthcare reform will be...and when he goes after Social Security, watch out.
This was likely the plan by the authors of No Child. Look at NCLB as a means of privatizing our formerly socialized public education commons and it all begins to make more sense. NCLB has failure ultimatley built into it and once the school fails it is privatized.
Teachers do not get the results until the next school year. Most teachers do not follow thier students to the next grade. They will not be teaching those same kids. They may not even be teaching the same grade. It is sad to see what this law puts our special needs students through.
Awesome vid. What these teachers are saying, whether they realize it or not, is the state monopoly of education is harmful to our children. Government needs to get out of the education business.
Wow, you are a shill for the venture capitalists privatizing our public schools. (The "government takeover" of the schools is not a government takeover. Obama and Bush before him are privatizing the schools and the losers will ultimately be 90% or more of our nation's children.)
This is so inspiring. aww! ? Thank you for sharing this.

No Child Left Behind is flawed because it assumes that all children have the same capabilities.
