Interestingly, the "Tell em how you're going to bore them. Bore them. Tell them how you bored them." has a lot of parrellels in adult learning concepts, and variations on that theme show up in boilerplate sales schedules, too.
I really enjoy all your videos. I have linked them into my channels that I use for teaching Economics at Wayne State University. I require my students to give a Pecha Kucha presentation of their term papers.
John - Glad you like the videos. I've had literally hundreds of Wayne State graduates in my seminars over the years that I had the Old Chrysler as a client.
A podium is also a good defense against ... flying tomatoes! (or cream-pies!)
Have you ever noticed that the president has a little piece of glass so he will not spit on his notes or on the first rows of public, for that matter? or maybe not to spit on the microphone, not to create a short circuit!
This video has some nice clips from the full 90 minute presentation. However, the main arguments of the presentation are curiously missing. I'd definitely recommend the whole video if public speaking is important to you.
My 15YO son has been suspended from school- unfairly in my opinion.
They had to do a presentation on a ‘role model’ & he chose Peter North. He explained how North, a proud Canadian, has used his cultural roots to anchor his amazing 20yr+ career in the Adult business, & how few mainstream actors can match his stamina & reliability in front of camera. All the products endorsed by North were displayed to show the man’s business acumen.
He’s naturally very upset at being punished like this.
@SuperTruth77 ..... I will say this, your son has lots of courage to portray a pornstar as his role model in a class presentation.....at some level he must have known this would have some kind of repercurssions, but he ran with it anyways, props to him....
Superb stuff. Very entertaining too. I have worked in firms where an annual presentation to staff is a big event, and some speakers do make you wish you had gone to the "restroom" a moment or two before it begins. An entertaining speaker does not always play by the rules. When I was at College in the 80's someone turned his business studies presentation into a bit of a comedy routine; I remembered his, but none of the others.
Great video - 1 minor correction. A "podium" is what you stand on; like a raised platform. A "lectern" is what you stand behind (5:15) which is what shown in the video.
Great video! It is so true that people really fear speaking in public. The good news is that this is something that can be easily overcome. It's well worth the effort to become, if not comfortable, then at least used to speaking before a group.
When the video ends, you don't even realize it was 7 mins 19 secs long... implying is a really good presentation since it keeps you involved and doesn't bore you.
Been a public speaker for 23 years and have incorporated much of what this man says. He's very good, for certain. I have preached the power of "white space" around important parts of a presentation for many a year; what you call the power of the pause. It's also a sign that the speaker is comfortable with themselves as well as their presentation. And eye contact - good thing to lead off with as it can denote confidence even if the speaker doesn't feel confident as long as it's done well.
What he means with the percentages is not that 41% said that"..." is their greatest fear; but that 41% of people said that, They do fear "...". So the percentages do not have to add up. Hope this helps

Hi Like the video, you are a very listenable and professional presenter. (Some of the written translation is a little off the mark though, just thought you would want to know..)
i like his presenting style but it really comes down to what kind of presentation we're talking about here. i'm a big fan of presenters with a lot of humor but at the same time, you don't want to make your presentations too casual so that your client may take you as nothing but a clown.

Right, Speedable. JDJ's motions when he was ducking behind his podium reminded me *precisely* of W. It's funny, because this video was made years before the infamous W incident.
This guy is awesome, but in my TM club we stress the importance of calling a lectern a lectern and not a "podium." (A podium is something you stand on.)
However, in this survey people were asked to list their top THREE fears. The list describes what percentage of total respondents included the particular fear in their choice of three.
@jdjefferys More-ever the same person can also be feared from more than one fear listed above, so infact they could be overlapped that's the reason it is more than 100%. Though it is a normal when you do a survey.
@rossenpavlov lol, its 41 out of 100, 32 out of 100, etc. the question were asked in a simple way, like are you afraid of public speaking. and the answer would be yes or no. and 41% of the people out of 100 are afraid of public speaking.
the percentages, in my view, are not neant to add up to 100%. i think it is to be understood that 41% mentioned fear while 59% did not, hence 41+59=100%. This should apply to all the other stats.
He does do a great job - the thing I noticed most about his speech was that he breaks up sentences with pauses exactly where they're meant to be broken, and runs through the clauses so smoothly. Pauses in the middle of clauses are real concentration killer for me. A hard skill to master! Great speaking job.
How did you do! Just remember - no matter what happens during a presentation the world keeps spinning, birds still chirp pretty little songs and most people watching you are just thinking they wish they could do what you are able to do! You always do better than you think!
This guy is really great - I liked what he said about people who actually CAN broke the rules - if you've got a natural talent you don't have to strictly follow the rules - although it's always good to enhance your craft but presentation rules are not the Bible. ;)
