  • this is plain wrong and it fucking sucks

  • DIABEETUS!

  • Bravo Shep :o)

  • I spend most of my middle school years drinking soda on a daily basis, and they were my fat years~

  • I usually don't like when He gets like this but the tax is pretty ridiculous... His points are valid. Except neither banning it or taxing it is the answer. The answer is taking responsibility for your actions. If you don't want the consequences of drinking HFCS don't drink it. Done.

  • @Ratd0g28 Children are victims of parental action or inaction and a parent cannot make an informed decision without understanding the long term consequences which we have yet to know as HFCS came out in the 80's and as this generation ages we may see some of the effects. I understand because I have read and studied HFCS on my own accord. The FDA and the rest of the government needs to be cleaned out, these corporate employees need to be banned from government positions.

  • Shep is probably the only sane fox news reporter out there.

  • i could propably understand this tax if you would have universal healthcare...

  • damn shep! go get em'

  • what the fuck is wrong w/ this pic? these cock suckers r sucking money anyway they can from the tax payers.....someone should go boondox saints and take out this shit.......at least the mafia has respect....these fuckers need to die!!! enough is enough....what the fuck is next? candy bars, cerials....then meat...then? some people need to die....this just is enough already....why don't they start stealing peoples wallets like other crooks....

  • He was just being facetious about the whole deal.

  • "Sounds to me more like they'd legalize the pot and stuff and tax that".

Shep more and more mentions libertarian points of view. I am beginning to think he's libertarian.

  • The entire idea of taxing soda is not necassary. It comes down to US farm policy. What is in our sodas and other junk foods.. HFCS! All you have to do is stop subsidizing the production of corn and the price of soda will increase naturaly. The only reason to grow corn is subsidies. W/o subsidies, corn production will stop until the market the price rises (due to lower supply). Just let basic free market econ take over & the price will go up on it's own. HFCS is only cheep because of subsidies!

  • None of them are talking about HFCS!

  • one day we will be tax 4 taking a shit you see if we dont

  • dumb americans,,,,every country on earth has coke pepsi with sugar in it...how come all those other countries dont have fat out of shape, disgusting buddies left dn right? lol....because soda doesnt make u fat lol....its food lol......

its funny how things are blamed

  • @muratshawn Wrong. Drink a case of soda a day. You will be fat. Other countries don't have as many people getting obese off of soda because they don't drink a gallon of it a day. Not because it doesn't make you fat.

  • @Intotheorchard

i agree ur right...most countries dont drink a case a day of pop....but still....i drink soda every day 3-4 of em...i am in perfect shape....but all i drink is diet. not that is better, but no sugar tho....

remember orange juice has almost as much sugar as a regular soda

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

  • Way to go Shepard..lmao.. San Francisco lunes.. legalize pot.. cigarettes are ok.. "Social Policy Expert.." LMFAO 25 yrs ago for cigarettes.. ARE YOU KIDDING ME ONLY 25 YEARS AGO?? LMFAO!!!! !! San francisco who lets people die in their parks from starvation and the elements passes laws on how your dog house has to match certain specifications and lets raise taxes on soda....LMFAO..

  • LMFAO… I bet they are going to tax diet soda.. LOL SAN FRANCISCO you can have it.. lol tax gum LMFAO The mayor of san fran has always been a lun...... San FRAN home of Pelosi.. F*ck are those people screwed up in the head.. way WAY too many drugs on haight ashbury

  • One of these days, the air we breathe will be taxed! (8.125% tax with each breath)

  • What an idiot. He thinks making pop illegal is better than taxing it? Let's give all our money to crime lords running the black market, not the stupid government (sarcasm).

  • this guy is an idiot. Can't he just talk about the topic without putting on a show? Go ahead and disagree, but disagree nicely

  • It should be way higher. Soda is exactly the same as candy, and we shouldn't drink it with meals. It's a luxury.

  • Before instituting a tax they need to reform food stamp programs so that they no longer cover discretionary items like soda, potato chips, twinkies etc. It makes no sense for the government to underwrite unhealthy eating with food stamps and then have to pay the resulting increase in medical bills through other programs. This is a case of the welfare state eating its own tail.

  • @Venant91182 People have been saying that for a long time, I agree

  • Way to go Shep! Bring on the brain machine!

  • HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA sometimes all you can do is laugh at the stupid republicans. fricken FOX news.

  • Tax my mattress, lmao. Awesome.

  • Does he say thanks so much MR. Mayor????

  • fuck soda tax asshole

  • shep has no premise behind his arguments..he just shouts and tries to belittles his guests. He does make one good point that a lot of products have high fructose corn syrup and how would we tax everything? Since the govnt subsidizes most of the corn in the country, the root of the problem comes straight from them.

  • it obama he fuck up the us

  • i have to agree taxen us to death

  • Taxes on soda, taxes on cigs, fines for not wearing a seat belt. Who cares what people do to themselves?... certainly not the government. It's all about the money. Also, taxing soda a few cents more won't solve anything.

  • you are right you so right. that's what's going to bring an end to this country. because corn syrup make you obese but they just want to make money and poision us

  • How is this soda tax gonna help? All its gonna do is exploit people by forcing them to pay more if they want soda. Its already expensive enough! All it does it make poor people poorer.

  • Anyone notice that it's the liberal cities that want soda taxes?

  • I agree with him, don't tax soda, just ban it!!!

  • DIABEETUS

  • spell it right retard

  • they should legalize weed and tax the shit out of it that would jumpstart the economy and keep weed around lol

  • that would be BAD cause weed would cost way more. Look at what happened when they tax the shit out of cigarettes?

  • Big Brother knows what's best for us. Trust the Government. Have they ever let us down before ?

  • oh wait... shep is making a good argument. i think i agree with him.

  • I'm surprised Shep isn't for this!

  • The difference between a sales tax on items and say income tax is that you can controll how much sales tax you're gonna pay by controlling your consumption. You don't want to pay too much sugar tax? Cut back on sugar. Such a tax is really great because it takes into account the long term costs of the item's consumption...ex.

public health costs, loss of productivity from sickness, environmental problems etc...

  • It's not sugar, it's high fructose corn syrup which is heavily subsidized by tax dollars.

So, the federal government takes our money and gives it to corn farmers to lower the price of corn which is then made into high fructose corn syrup. Then the state comes along and puts a tax on the soda to encourage people not to drink it. I got a better idea, lets end the corn subsidy and then we won't need the soda tax.

  • @christo930 ok thanks for the correction. I am all for a HFCS sales tax, I am even for a progressive sales tax rate on the fat content in products, the higher the saturation and cholesterol content, the higher the tax could be. With this money we can subsidize healthy, organic food instead.

  • We shouldn't be subsidizing any food. Subsidizing foods distorts the market. Let's say they decide to subsidize peas, but you like carrots... Subsidizing food items creates gluts of what is subsidized and shortages of what is not. Look at what subsidizing corn has done! Not only has it made us fat with HFCS, it has also made it's way into ethanol and drove up the price of food so that poor people in other countries were starving.

  • @christo930 I have no problem distorting an already warped market. Junk food is cheap to make, easy to scale, addictive to a certain extent and very profitable for its producers on the short term, with or without subsidies. But it's destroying us. Sustainable farming and living is not lucrative or scalable on the short term . That's why we need subsidies/taxes (or sthing else) to fix the warped market. Your examples are on point tho and show how important it is to subsidize/tax the RIGHT things.

  • Instead of subsidies, why not taxes on the bad foods? Do you want some bureaucrat deciding which 'good' food gets the subsidy? If his state produces a lot of beets, you can rest assured he will be in favor of subsidizing beets.

Put taxes on high calorie/low nutrient foods like HFCS, sugar, transfats... and let the market decided how much of what good food gets produced.

  • @christo930 I already said I support the HFCS tax and I'd even go as far as tax fat content progressively according to level of saturation and cholesterol content. The problem is that people are complaining that they can't afford to eat healthy already and junk food and soda was all they could afford to begin with (for reasons already detailed). There's a recession so if you're gonna tax sthing as vital as food, you might wanna use the revenue to subsidize a healthier alternative:)

  • If people can't afford to pay for good food, what is going to make them able to afford to give Washington the money to subsidize good food (not to mention that much of that money is lost to waste).

Subsidizing food is bad no matter how you look at it.

  • @christo930 well the taxes on bad foods should cover the subsidies on good food, that's how I figure it should be paid for...

  • @christo930 I would like an independent body of qualified scientists, like USDA in cooperation with FDA to decide what foods (plural) are essential to our diet and what are the most effective means to produce them in terms of yield, nutrient content and cost of production both long/short term i.e. taking into account consumption of water, energy, fertilizer and land area (soil depletion, ecological sustainability and biodiversity). This way u can be more discriminating and frugal.

  • So now you want a fully planned agricultural sector? Has Washington ever been able to do anything with money without politics getting involved? Whatever food industry has the most pull will get the subsidy, that's how it works. It's best to just tax the bad stuff.

  • @christo930 I don't want a fully planned agricultural sector:) I just would like to see SOME healthy foods and sustainable farming methods subsidized, that would otherwise be outcompeted by the junk food mega industries. Let scientists decide which crops to subsidize. This is a choice of crops, not companies. The decision would have to be justified by scientific PEER REVIEW. We cannot stop every government service that was ever corrupted or we may as well stop having a govt.

  • This is conservative media in a nutsell. Pathetic.

  • My hero, she deserved it! Seriously, seems you should end the subsidy on high fructose corn syrup before doing anything else.

  • This guy is a rude jerk. And he ignores that kids are being bought this crap by their parents, so it's not just adults choosing to drink crap. Kids are suffering from poor diets. At least cigarettes are SUPPOSED to be restricted to 18 and up year olds.

  • this lady is a fucking loon

  • Instead of taxing soda, why don't we stop subsidizing it instead? If we stopped subsidizing corn, the cost of HFCS would go way up on it's own and America would stop producing so much corn and start producing other crops. EVERY SINGLE ACRE OF CORN IN AMERICA IS SUBSIDIZED! Drop the subsidy and soda goes up and we save billions of tax dollars.

  • Liberals.. They wan't more "freedom" by asking for more laws, taxes, and political correctness.

  • I would love to know what % of the U.S. population supports some form of tax on sugary drinks and non-diet sodas. I'm betting its a large majority for such a tax...especially if it will help close budget deficits and prevent reduced municipal services.

  • The reason states and local governments are having such a hard time is because the federal gov taxes us to death leaving no room to tax for services we get like trash removal (still city provided in my city) and fire fighters. The federal gov taxes us and subsidizes corn which make HFCS so cheap and so now we want to tax the drinks made with a product that is federally funded! How about we end the funding?

  • @christo930 very good point.

  • This fascist B!#$#$ offers no empirical evidence that soda is the CAUSE of obesity or diabetes because there is none. There may be an association between obesity and soda drinkers, but I can find a statistical association between almost anything. I hope they tax bad make-up, because it makes people ugly. Coffee because there is 3-4 x more sugar in starbuck's drinks than soda. In fact tax anything high in fat and cholesterol, cause they cause obesity too.

  • But why subsidize it? Corn is highly subsidized in America and that makes this tax retarded. Instead of taxing it, just remove the subsidy on corn and the cost of HFCS will go way up, even higher than sugar and we will get to keep our money.

  • if a tax on soda keeps you from feeding your family you prob should be drinking tap

  • Can't these pigs drink H2O? wtf...

  • Nanny state

  • that lady needs to kill her self

  • shove your taxes up you asses tax

  • americans, boycott all food.just buy flour and eat bread for a week.we did it in my country and the government lossed revenue and lifted the tax

  • Soda is one of the reasons we have so many FAT ASSES in this country. It should be taxed, but the corn lobby will never allow it.

  • why? if people want to be fat and drink a shitload of soda everyday why hider them from doing it. If someone wants to drink that crap i could care less

  • Because fat asses drive up the cost of healthcare for all of us.

  • Amen!

  • Exactly who the fuck are you to say that it's correct to tax my soda just because it's my choice to get fat or not. There are diets out there that do keep you from eating and drinking these sort of foods. It's not the business' fault that you're getting fat it's the person buying it. Just say no. Why hurt the people financially when you can easily raise funding to raise awarness. Stop looking for the government to help all the time.

  • Why do American news presenters have such strong opinions?

  • Because they're no longer hiding the fact that they're propaganda dispensers.

  • Because they are pundits

  • I agree with what she said about prohibition.

  • Soda is evil and deserves to be taxed out of existence.

  • Tonight I'm going to sleep well so you might need to tax my matress!

  • she is right taxes will help people cut down on spending money...and when he said that cigarettes have taxes which are funding us, then so will soda since a lot of people buy soda...

  • People shouldn't be drinking such sugary drinks to where they care about it anyway. Fat americans!

  • that guy is fucking annoying. damn.

  • he didnt even let her talk...he disagreed with her before she even got a word an inch wise

what a dick...i dont really think we should tax sodas...i think people just need to stop being fucking dumb...

but what an asshole...i hate assholes like that

  • I like Shepard Smith I vote for him if he ran for presidant.

  • I say we need a tax on all scumbag tyrants.Should this be the focus when americans across the country are losing there jobs? These scumbags that comeup with these crazy taxes and laws need to be rounded up and hanged.

  • I am going to see red if this passes!!! Leave my soda alone!!!

  • His reasoning is wrong. you can't just ban it because Congree is too corrupt to did. The only way they can limit it is tax. getting hit by a bus is not the same as drinking sugary soda.

  • Yes it is because you can avoid both. That was his logic. If you know something is dangerous then avoid it. If you want to cross the bus then don't blame the driver blame yourself for being ignorant to the facts that it could hurt you. Easy as that. Congress can ban cigs just like they banned alcohol, but they won't because it brings much needed money in.

  • Who cares, I found Gin and cars make a great combination. I just hate it when people get in your way.

  • Honestly repubs should be for this since it most certainly will be those in the lower half of the income bracket who will pay for most of it. the fact is that poor people are much more likely to be overweight and thus drink soda.

anyway taxes on alcohol and cigarrettes have historically lowered the frequency of people who use them, shep is off on that one.

  • Were in the Constitution does the Federal Govt. get the authority to tax(regulate)this? Do you not think after the feds get their foot in the door with this one that others will be next? Fats, carbs, oil, sugar in general, salt?

  • Do any of you Bi-Partisan hacks realize how hysterical this is?

  • Do we really want the government deciding what we drink? and what we can't drink? And what we eat and what we don't eat?

Government dictating what we eat n' drink ? Is that what we want?

Better speak up America, or someday we'll all be sitting at the supper table eating our lettuce and carots and wondering what the hell happened? How did we allow the government begin deciding what we eat and drink?

  • Amen Im with you

  • oh no your not gonna tax my "Red & White"

  • How about taxing alcohol? That's more dangerous than anything. You hear about people dying everyday in drunk driving accident? I think it's crazy that they're taxing cigarettes like crazy, and I don't smoke.

  • America's obesity problem is directly linked to government subsidies to corn farmers.

High fructose corn syrup is rarely if ever used in Europe.

  • How about a high tax on food to stop peope from being over weight.

  • His argument is highly invalid. The tobacco tax is rising in Canada, the consumption is decreasing. Aside from the taxing, there are other restrictions (can't display the packages, graphic warning labels, etc), which is supposedly against the government's interest if they want a higher tobacco tax revenue. Whether or not I agree with this policy, punitive tobacco taxes WORK.

  • 0:58 - Culturally we're not aware of the dangers of sugar? Are you fucking serious? A day doesn't go by where I don't see a diabetes commercial or some sort of diet commercial making me more than aware.

From what I understand I think they're calling for a quarter penny tax per fl oz of soda. A 24 pack will end up costing your 70 cents more than before. That's not going to stop people from drinking soda it's just going to piss people off.

  • THATS UNCONSTITUTIONAL! Fuck Liberals!

  • What about "conservatives" who say theyre all about freedom and then they try banning drugs, starting a war on drugs, banning prostitution, abortion, gay marriage, and all the things other people want by they dont like? What about conservatives trying to keep the blue law where people cant buy alcohol on Sunday when theres a separation of church and state? What about conservatives keeping the drinking age ABOVE the age of majority? Its not just liberals, CONSERVATIVES are doing it too!!

  • GO SHEP..... Why is it every normal thinking person thinks this is crap but the feds are for it! I am sick of this government power grabbing bullshit. enough is enough. PLEASE people pay close attention to which of the crooks in Washington support what. We need to clean house and replace them. If done right we could get rid of all of them and show future politicians we wont play this game. ENOUGH is ENOUGH!!!

  • hey, if san fransisco wants a soda tax, i say let the fools have it...it's the fucking national soda tax for "comucare" that's driving me crazy! and this is one of the main reasons why i don't support national healthcare in the first place- b/c it ties everyone to everyone else's ankle. i can be as healthy as possible, but i'll still have to pay for the fatsos; so the pigs in washington just try to tax everyone...

  • This is scary. If they want to tax soda bcuz it contains hifrutosecornsyrup; they willendup taxing all our food; read your labels; youtube "codex alimentarius" vids: watchem. This is just the beginning of a larger plot to see wut govt can get away with. Control food-control the world. Its ridiculous and nonsense; so somewhere there is a great lie. Govt is going for total control in all aspects of our lives. Watch the news; look up to your skies; read food labels(get gardening lol)

  • Well, we still have water, unless they decide to tax that too...I can see it happening right now.

  • Good God, Our government is not only GREEDY.....they are RETARDED!!! Just another excuse for ANOTHER tax! Hell no!! Revolution is not far away as Americans are getting FED UP with the bullshit!! Who was that UGLY beeeyatch? Looks like she could be related to NAZI pelosi?

  • Haha! SO great!!! well put!!!!

  • Oh man, if i were some whackjob with a bad idea id be more afraid of Shep then Bill O'reilly

  • i agree on the guy, might as well tax your kids, and tax the air you breath, and make more slaves

  • He nailed it dead on - once institutionalized as a source of taxes, tobacco is forever. BRILLIANT response to the notion "this tax is for your own good." Everyone has to protest vigorously against so-called "obesity" taxes - nip this one in the bud - or soon they will be taxing a lot of different things that fall into the category of ordinary food & drink.

  • This is disturbing. You can see how astonished she is when he begins talking about cigarettes bring in tax revenue.. eek!

  • That guy has so much absurd energy he must be drinking coffee. "I deem that people acting like him are absurd. By the power invested in me by the people I represent, I will hereby make their decisions for them because I decide whats best for them. I hereby deem anyone who drinks coffee absurd. People shouldn't be absurd (to the point they get so thirsty they need water breaks), so they shouldn't drink coffee. Therefore all coffee should be illegal."

  • ...ie. force Soda manufactures to display a small label health warning or something on a can if it's unhealthy and a public health problem etc..... If the government were more concerned with public health and less with tax increases... I feel a label would be more effective in telling consumers the actual health risks than a hiked price.

  • I drink 100% milk/water and 0% soda. I am healthy and fit, and love to run. But I disagree with this ridiculous tax increase. I don't know to me it feels like the government is trying to decide for me and I don't like that. But man I love milk! I also feel many health problems are caused by malnutrition, etc. And yet doctors hand out "medicines" that don't prevent the problem of living unhealthy but rather "cure" the effects. I feel that increasing public awareness would be most effective

  • his answer is to have the government decide what's illegal for you. "It should be illegal instead of taxed" is his answer. Absurd (his opinion and the tax). People have the right to decide, the autonomy to make choices about their own personal issues, their own health, etc.

  • TAX ON SODA BECAUSE IT CAUSES OBESITY?!?!

ALL FOOD CAN CAUSE OBESITY IF TOO MANY CALORIES ARE CONSUMED!

I know, why doesn't the mayor outlaw food, because it makes people fat.

  • My doctor said the same thing. I think the argument is that surgery sodas are often "empty" calories with little nutritional value. But, dang, why not have something 'cause it tastes good!

  • if this asshole would let people speak he would learn something. not that i agree with her but his responses were probably all written out before he talked to her.

    fuck corporate news.

  • this is fucking horse shit. food is already fucking taxed.

18% sales tax on sodas? fucking quit wasting money and you won't have to make up your budget deficit on people who drink/use pop. because not everyone buys coke to drink it, it has a lot of other practical applications.

    only in the u.s....

  • i agrere with everything u said except "pop" wtf is "pop" its soda dude S-O-D-A SODA!!

  • Do you not realize that they are the same thing? Or are you just a dick?

  • I realize that if this country is to unite and change, we need to all come to a CONSENSUS that Americans drink soda not pop. I don't know this "pop" and everybody knows soda. in other languages there are translations for the word soda, but no translations for the word pop as a drinkable beverage. So if I'm coming off as a dick so be it, but I'm setting the record straight. Americans drink soda not pop. pussies drink pop. cornballs drink pop. shit richard simmons drinks pop. Americans drink Soda!

  • Do you want everyone to think all Americans are as stupid as you are? I'm not even making reference to America at all, I don't live in your country, and it's unfortunate that you people have managed to get on the internet and spread your nonsense. I'm not sure what part of the United States you're from but people all over northeast say 'pop'. You are ignorant and uninformed.

  • I'm from new york city go to school upstate new york, I've met many ppl fromall over north east. mid west down south. west coast, and the north east doesnt use pop. and if ur not from this country how do u even think to say that ppl all over the north east say pop. i lived in the north east all my life and was surprized by pop when i was 12 out in the mid west. ITS A FUCKIN JOKE have a sense of humor, alot of people realize how rediculous it is to say POP and kind of childish and queer as well.

  • "Pop" is a slang for soft drink based on Faygo Pop which was very popular mainly in the Midwest. In the south, soft drinks are often referred to as "Coke" due to Coca Cola's southern roots (HQ in Atlanta, GA). "Soda" refers to the base of soft drinks before syrup is added (is in "soda fountains" where they are blended).

  • I go with "soft drink" since the country is 50-50% on the soda or pop ratio.

  • There are very, very few times that I agree with FOX news (actually never). This time though... I have to say he has a point.

  • This isnt about fat people its about all people. They want your money! Why not just punch us in the face and take it thats next

  • I think the mayor is cracking up...

  • what about those of us that arent obese. i like soda and im actually in shape so im going to be penalized because other people cant moderate their food, sugar, and exersize.

  • i agree. I'm a fat motherfucker and i don't blame the soda. I blame myself for swilling it down! I'm sick of this whole socialist crap that's hip since we elected Obama! Enough with this bullshit already!

  • fat asses rule! Power to our big buns!!!!

  • When I watch socialists like Gavin Newsome and David Paterson it makes me extremely proud to be a conservative Republican. Shepperd Smith rules!

  • gay tax

  • LMAO!!! Shep shut that crazy woman up!! I love watching him.

  • lol owned

  • Shep, LOLOLOL!!

  • San Fransisco wants to tax Americans on soda because their sancuary city policy needs the taxes to pay for criminals health care, we all must sacrafice for the criminals health care.

  • Definatley disturbed

  • I mean "who's actually stupid enough to drink that stuff anyway"? Slap a tax on it, slap a few taxes on it even, I doubt any dumb ass consumer will notice.

  • it's time for another tea party people!

  • WHOOO! Go Shep!

  • "I'll let you talk it up before I beat you up" XDDDD

  • Go Fox News!

  • DUMB

  • dude you are a DUMBASS!!!!!!!!

ya like he said legalize pot and tax that while your at it

and ill get a good night sleep so tax my matress

and cell phones supposivly give you cancer, so tax the fucken phones
