You have to understand that racing was still in its young years, people wanted to see cars at the limits of speed, drivers were crazy, urmm brave... and were willing to top out their cars down the long straights. This track is just one example of how tracks used to be, this was before the time of chicanes, and tight corners to control speed.
The north curve still exists (minus the banking, which was demolished in the 1960s), and is much the same as when AVUS was last used for DTM, German F3 etc in the 1990s... you can walk around this part, which is now part of a car & truck stop. The control tower (now AVUS Motel/restaurant) is still there with the Mercedes emblem on top. The old grandstand which looks down on the start-finish straight is a protected monument, though you can't go in it....
... The bulk of the circuit, the two straights, are now used as busy autobahn. I went there in August to see for myself. I didn't follow the autobahn to the South Curve, but apparently you can see the outline of this corner too. Well worth visiting if you're in Berlin.
yes it does. the banking turn is gone. but the track still exists. it is a high way now. not a real track anymore. but if they close it for a gp it will still be as this. they only added a chicane.
Don't know if you're just trolling or what, but it's not Jean Behra. Behra was thrown from his car and hit a flagpole. This crash is the similar earlier one of Richard von Frankenberg, and he walked away.
I'm pretty sure that this crash isn't behra's. behra spun off the banking while it was raining and he flew backwards over the top and this car at 0:20 (I'm pretty sure) goes forward, also it seems like it is dry because you can see dirt flying 0:2 that wouldn't be there if it was raining

Seriously one of the dumbest tracks ever. High banking, no barrier. Just 2 long straights with one hairpin and one Daytona-like curve. Psychotic!

The crash at 0:20 is that of Richard von Frankenberg in 1956.

That 43 degree banked turn puts the 31degrees of Daytona to shame.

Was that Jean Behra at 0:20?
