Thanks for posting this "how not to" video". That took guts because of the merciless commentary you will likely suffer. Had the skipper moved seconds later likely the boom would have struck him on the crash gybe, luck (timing) was with you there. Perhaps the crew in blue PFD should learn more than to sit in silent witness, like move his ass to weather on a floundering boat.
To the crew of this boat - Well done! Well done for having the guts to post this...anything online is bound to get some critique - mostly by people who have never been in a situation.
"Everybody slow down for a second!" These are the best lines in the video. Those are life saving words. I applaud the skipper for that.
I'm sure there has been many comments already. Round the boat...up. If you feel broach coming, blow the vang.
Poor girl at the helm looks like she wanted to vomit! Just last night I sailed Lake St Clair and was pit..24 ft Catalina with chute up in 30 knots. We broached and I had to blow the spin halyard which still managed to catch my finger and leave nasty ropeburn. But this was in a storm, at night, and our worst injury. I agree with other posts, seems like this crew learned some good lessons that trip!
looks like they were running Way too deep of an angle for what appears to be about 15 knots of wind and if she hadnt of turned so abrubtly when the boat started to heel then nothing would of happened.. in a capri you can hold some fairly hot angles with a chute but they seem to have enough trouble with ddw
great broach the best way to learn , i like the dude in the white hat , holding on for dear life, you know , good on you guys , at least your all out there getting wet. team work comes about from preasure situations, love it.
, and furthermore foredeck crew standing up. Everyone should stay LOW, during a spinnaker recovery top priority is for foredeck crew to sit down and secure themselves as a tiny gust of wind can pull the chute and them with it overboard. There is 10,000lbs of force on your chute, it will maim you and is a very dangerous item. Practice chute handling in 3kts of wind next time... and why were all the sheets released? Blow the halyard, trim the guy and pull the sheet in from the foot into the hatch.
As a captain of a similarly sized boat (30 feet) who sails chute all the time, I can confidently say that you folks have no business flying chutes or sailing in general in that much wind. Several times during the video I saw people in with their arms caught through the loops of the mainsheet, it would have ripped their arms off if an accidental gybe happened. Not to mention not trimming in the main sheet and just letting the boom fly across, people always standing in the way of the boom,
This is a great vid! Its SO easy to have answers after the event. Anyone who sails who claims that they have NEVER broached has never sailed. Maybe not broached as extreme as this.....perhaps, but why dont you just SHUT UP!! Skipper did take control, no one got hurt, and all ended up well enough to post the vid and have a laugh at themselves.
Wrong People! You either blow the sheet or blow the after guy (pole permitting). Cutting the Halyard? I don't even know what you're talking about by that! Love the music and the skipper's good sense of humor in the face of an already humiliating experience, in which we've ALL been!
im sorry but this skipper had 0 control, anyone could see that coming. May i point out that a tiller extension is incredibly crucial on boats like this, you can muscle the boat around a lot better. Also, if possible, a round up is 100% better than a chinese gybe, so skipper please dont sail again in 20+ knots without a tiller extension.
Great recovery only 1 small thing that helps with a MOB situation.... skipper's first order must be to appoint someone to keep eye contact and to physically point at the MOB until he/she is back aboard
Ok like everyone elase Im gonna have my say. Firstly why the hell was the hatch open. Ive seen boats sink becasue they're not shut and seen them recover ok cost they are shut. Second why the hell is the helm trying to bear away in to a jibe,. if the boat had come up it would have all gone a bit chinese the other way. Head to wind blow the halyard and get control. trying to pick an MOB with power will result in death or injury. You were all lucky
Fun video, makes me want to learn how to sail. I work commercial fishing vessels in the waters of Alaska and this video reminded me a little bit of the intensity that happens when you have greenhorns on deck. Although, in Alaska the weather is what makes things go wrong all the time.
I'm not too well experienced a sailor. But surely the spectator boat would have got the MOB before the competitor boat, even if they blew both sails and turned on the engine. I've also not heard of a rig that allows for the blowing of a halyard, does that require a secondary rope going all the way up to the mast head to the fwd hlyd carabiner?
Once you blow the halyard it's gone, you have to send someone up the mast to run it again. (no big deal you should still have 2 other halyards to get someone up)
If you think the speactor boat could get to the MOB faster, or that the quickest way to recover a MOB is to turn the motor on you need to go do some training with US Sailing or the ASA, or at least read up about the "quick stop" technique.
Cutting the Halyard seems like an expensive measure for a MOB in freshwater with safety boats. Surely a quick stop involves backing a jib? Which in this case would need to be unpacked, hanked on and hoisted... Then trimmed.
Well, you don't need to cut the halyard just open the jammer or uncleat it and let it run free, and no a quick stop doesn't involve backing the jib just heading head to wind. If you have the jib up it's ok to back it although more preferable to let it luff.
True, you would not have to cut it. But it would have taken them out of the next race as well. There is a big difference between a MOB out at sea and a MOB in a race with loads of traffic. Seeing as the spectator boat cannot be seen in this film until after the pick up I guess we will have to leave it up to those in the video to decide the best course of action.
Very bad decisions by the Skipper here could have cost lives. It is irrelevant that this is an inshore race or that there is only 15-20knts of breeze. ANYTHING can and WILL happen (As seen here). A bit of pre-planning and more knowledge is evidently missing.
You should take a long hard look at yourself buddy and in future not take anyones life in your hands without being prepared and accountable.
my god, from a skippers point of view that was a shocker. Inexperienced crew for a kite run like that in that breeze. Didn't see any bouys go over in the MOB or a spotter with is hand watching. Practice again before ya screw up big time. skipper would have been done in a court of law had anything serious happened.
Like the part where the captain let's go of the tiller. At that point she is scared to death. Not what you want from a captain at that moment in time.
Yell 'manoverboard' & throw a TYPE IV throwable device towards them - Assign crew member to keep manoverboard in site (pointing helps) DO NOT LOOSE SITE OF THEM.
3. immediately head up - (problem - cut chute free) and go back for crew. Chutes are cheaper than people.
A skipper's first job is to be safe.
Work on emergency fundamentals - manoverboard especially.
You're absolutely right. Assuming you're on your own in the middle of nowhere.
Give them a break, it was an inshore race in 15-20kts breeze, no-one clips on in that. A lot of people don't even wear buoyancy aids in that much breeze. I wouldn't (admittedly I spend most of my time in the cockpit).
There were spectator boats picking people up - if you don't need to cut the kite free, then don't.
Emergency fundamentals are boring. Racing isn't. Get back on it and put it right.
I want to thank captain stupid for asking for more boom vang and not assigning anyone to control the sheeting of the main. I'm sure Mr. Blue PFD would be moving faster were he not clinging on for dear life whilst thanking his God for a head that still rests upon his shoulders.
I'VE GOT NOTHING! - well put.
"We'll be right back Jill!" -sounds like a threat.
you should rename your boat disney's idiot kingdom, cause i saw gooffy, daffy micky, donald, and bozo the clown! looks like you guys took turns shooting each other with a stungun, and the the tub of lard in the blue vest? what the ?? were you trying to tip the boat?? and the girl on the fore deck did not fall she jumped!! to the so called captin next time you want to impress your friends take them out for a beer but keep them away from water!!
I dont care how much floundering there is, This is too cool! LOL ( I was just waiting for that boom to take someone out, thank God THAT didnt happen!!)
Gripping video, good music too. Couple of recommendations: Harness, at least for fordeck, one person keeping eye on man overboard, quick release on spinnaker clue.
Having done my share of foredeck on racing keelboats, I was totally engaged in the video. I thought the episode was quite gripping. Thanks for sharing your experience. I have never fallen off, but I have fallen short on the hoist just like Jill did.
I love how the tub'o'lard landlubber in blue does shit all to help not to mention stays on the low side the whole time (rather than putting his sizable mass to good use as rail meat)
in the meatime it was not dangerous, not bad weather, no waves... in case of bad waves you could have sunk the boat staying in that position so long (waves can enter the cockpit)
One word : RELEASE THE SPINNAKER GUYS :) anf if you can't, buy a knife (it saves life sometimes)
Whaa. Very dangerous and stupid, spinaker can be very strong sail for a beginner. Why didn't they go downwind at the start. But have to say very brave crue (or just keeping themselves alive:=)
Brilliant video! Creat position for the camera, text narration worked really well!
I'll not comment on the sailing side of things other than to say... I like stuffing around with spinnakers heaps and have broached a few times BUT you have to make sure everbody on the boat knows what they are in for! Don't go surprising people!
Man...use the jib until you can fully handle the chute. This over board person could have been toast without the follow boat. Too close for comfort here.
Yes, but things happen when you are out in the water. We had a whale hit out keel on a sunny day. He could have sunk our boat! We always wear life vests and have hand held radios on us. Check out my man overboard video from my boating TV show. Stuff happens to all of us out there.
Most accidents could have been prevented or better prepared for. The worst is when people have children on a boat they put in danger. The lack of safe boaters is why I created Captains Log TV show that was on TLC for 3 years. You can see a clip of a man overboard on my Youtube site.
the skipper's big mistake here was bearing off when he was heeling to windward. The puff hit, he heeled leeward and bore off (correct) but then began to deathroll; he bore off even more and, unsurprisingly, jibed. He should have anticipated-- as you see, the crew in the white anticipated and dove to port immediately before the flying jibe.
I could';t help laughing. The skipper was clearly overwhelmed and the foredeck wasn't doing to well either. Really funny though. Thanks for posting and nice camera mount.
This IS training ya bunch of dryballs. I raced in New Zealand for years and couldn't help laughing my head off watching this . We used to wipe out ten times bigger than this in huge winds and seas and when we had a lot of newbies on board it was our exhileration and belly laughter afterwards that had them clamoring for more not the "you stupid newbie" response.
I have to agree with some of you if you are unexperienced then you need to be learning in lighter coditions. I took some sailing lessons last summer and am now trying to save up for a small sailboat. I would never go and try and do something with a bunch of others who didn't have a clue.
Cunado una persona se cae al agua tiene que haber alguien que la mire todo el tiempo, claramente aca no paso eso, tambien tiene que haber alguien que lleve en la mano el vang para que no le pase lo que les paso al principio, claramente no saben navegar
get your crew trained , and wtf ur skipper is stupid if breech take the kite down b4 u turn back downwind , 5,20 mins recovery rubish you should just droped the kite on foredeak and went for her shes more inportant that a kite
Kudos for posting the video. I think you are very lucky that the boat didn't capsize and someone didn't get hurt. I think the main weakness is the over confidance of the captain. I was lmao. It was a very good effort though. I am sure more than a few on that boat will never set foot on a boat again and for the rest it will be a life long passion.
everytime I watch this video, I shake my head more and more. I don't understand why a boat with a reefed main is flying a spinnaker with this crew. There is times to fly a chute, and a boat full of newbies without anyone knowing what is going on(even the skipper), its stupid.
You people give a bad name to sailors. Get a clue... read a book, sail when its light, and figure stuff out... like have a guy trimmer, a competent bowman, etc.
Oh thanks, I haven't laughed that hard in a long time. But seriously, experienced or inexperienced, everyone on the boat should know their job and what to expect in the conditions that are being sailed. (jeeze-get to the high side) You guys were lucky...and much praise to rescue boat for pick up of that bow person.
I am one of the ill-fated crew members in this video. It should be explained that this race was a multi-purpose regatta, it was for a fundraiser as well as for the Capri Nationals. The benefit was for Juvenile Diabetes, and we had some diabetes sufferers onboard as guests. It was a mixed crew of amateurs and experienced sailors. The wind conditions were definitely above our collective abilities. As you can see from the video, no one paniced, and no one was injured.
i wouldnt worry cos it happens to the best of us and when the situation got really serious after the chinese gybe they all performed admirably. except for the helmsman she didnt seem to be with it or the guy sitting at the mainsheet doing nothing. but i bet they learned alot so they can laugh at the bext person who does it.
This is a great training video, and I salute the captain for being brave enough to put it up. Certainly there is a lot of what not to do in this, but to those posting derogatory comments, stop stating the obvious, that is at least as bone headed as anything in the video and unlike the crew you have time to think about your post. Personally I appreciate the comments that point out what was done wrong, so that next time it can be done right.
driver is watching crew instead of driving (did she learn that from the skipper?) She should be on the high side and pumping helm to keep the boat under the spin in gusts, guy in blue doing nothing should be calling puffs, too much noise and chatter. Well, good learning experience...keep it up! Videos are great for learning.
in real life Jill would lost at sea. I was watching this video thinking "they operating a killin' machine" and then she went overboard. thy would not have been able to keep eye contact with her. they would have made a u-turn and not been able to find her. if there is any doubt, practice a man-overboard in seas, use a ball with hat on hit, and see if you can turn around and find it, spot it. four out four, this crew would lose one. they need to train.
Am I missimg the point or is what happens to the spin pole and halyard secondary 2 the fact that the helm should have borne away when the gust came & there should have been 2 people on the sheet & guy to play them. The way I look at it they werent ready/able for the gust and even if the spin had been set properly they still would have broached. The way they reacted to the situation as well as how long it took them to get the spinakker set in the first place shows tells a lot
Good on them. No one got hurt and they learnt something. Unlike some of the arm bar stool experts, ready to banish them to the shore forever, I was not born knowing how to sail, Let he (or her) without sin cast the first stone i say. ( No I am not a bible basher)
LMFAO "I'll be right back Jill!" Novice crew & a comedy skipper, how hilarious that he proudly displayed his MOB recovery time at 5 minutes - er, if it hadnt been for the boat behind you, she wouldve probably been better off swimming for it!And I love the stirring ' bravery in the face of bad skippering' music - unfortunately the benny hill show theme tune would have been better. And the poor guy clinging for dear life to the side!! Havent laughed so much in weeks!!!
Shocking, but a perfect demonstration of what not to do and what can go wrong with crew who have no idea or experiance of sailing, go and take some lessons please before you injure someone or try taking up a different sport
In the beginning if the driver would have fallen off more and blanketed the chute behind the main it could have been raised to the top most likely without coming undone from the pole. Then they may not have wiped out at all. The true test of a good crew is how quicky they recover from an incident. These guys need some more practice and definitely better direction and communication from the skipper.
Absolutely apalling. That crew had no business flying the chute in those condition. Damn lucky no one was hurt. This is nothing to be proud of. Stay the hell away from me on the course.
Yeah, not a proud moment and they are lucky no one was hurt, but how else will they learn? Whaddya mean they shouldn't be out there? They didn't round up into anyone, what are you afraid of? Maybe next time they'll blow the vang, hang on and have more of the crew helping or on the high side.
He should have had at least two more experienced competent crew. If he did, that would have been an excellent scenario to train in newbies. He made a very poor decision to bring at least one child out into that situation. I'm guessing his decision making at mark roundings is probably not so good either, hence my comment. FYI you don't blow the vang DDW. It was a round down, the main was helping balance the boat.
If only they could douse the kite as well as they did the kid at 2:48.

ironic though-

And who does a spinnaker, with the crew jumping about all over the boat
Spin runs should have everybody in the cockpit balancing the boat, not jumping about all over the place.

back to sailing school you guys!
bad recovery, if you want to call it that.

you need serious training here guys :)
in the meatime it was not dangerous, not bad weather, no waves... in case of bad waves you could have sunk the boat staying in that position so long (waves can enter the cockpit)
One word : RELEASE THE SPINNAKER GUYS :) anf if you can't, buy a knife (it saves life sometimes)

Whaa. Very dangerous and stupid, spinaker can be very strong sail for a beginner. Why didn't they go downwind at the start. But have to say very brave crue (or just keeping themselves alive:=)
johan361 3 years ago
Brilliant video! Creat position for the camera, text narration worked really well!
I'll not comment on the sailing side of things other than to say... I like stuffing around with spinnakers heaps and have broached a few times BUT you have to make sure everbody on the boat knows what they are in for! Don't go surprising people!

chute= nickname for spinnaker.
the boat self righted cause there's a damn keel!
classic music. adds some serious dramatic element that otherwise would make this vid kinda boring!

is a chute a spinnaker? cuz it looks exactly like one.

Man...use the jib until you can fully handle the chute. This over board person could have been toast without the follow boat. Too close for comfort here.

BurtonKelly12 3 years ago
Yes, but things happen when you are out in the water. We had a whale hit out keel on a sunny day. He could have sunk our boat! We always wear life vests and have hand held radios on us. Check out my man overboard video from my boating TV show. Stuff happens to all of us out there.
MIBstudios 3 years ago
Yes,but this stuff on the video could have been prevented.
BurtonKelly12 3 years ago
Most accidents could have been prevented or better prepared for. The worst is when people have children on a boat they put in danger. The lack of safe boaters is why I created Captains Log TV show that was on TLC for 3 years. You can see a clip of a man overboard on my Youtube site.

My hat goes off to Corey Hammet.
americanplatano 4 years ago 3
the skipper's big mistake here was bearing off when he was heeling to windward. The puff hit, he heeled leeward and bore off (correct) but then began to deathroll; he bore off even more and, unsurprisingly, jibed. He should have anticipated-- as you see, the crew in the white anticipated and dove to port immediately before the flying jibe.

macman13 4 years ago
This IS training ya bunch of dryballs. I raced in New Zealand for years and couldn't help laughing my head off watching this . We used to wipe out ten times bigger than this in huge winds and seas and when we had a lot of newbies on board it was our exhileration and belly laughter afterwards that had them clamoring for more not the "you stupid newbie" response.

Christ! Looks like an all newbie crew.
I like that the captain in the end brags about the recovery taking five minutes when it could have taken two and with much less chaos.
I would never have hoisted a spinnaker with a crew that inexperienced.
greengrayhound 4 years ago
dat was so bad i have thaught younger children than me 2 sail better. she is one bad skipper you should only make mistakes like that on a dinghy
leoliamll 4 years ago
I have to agree with some of you if you are unexperienced then you need to be learning in lighter coditions. I took some sailing lessons last summer and am now trying to save up for a small sailboat. I would never go and try and do something with a bunch of others who didn't have a clue.

get your crew trained , and wtf ur skipper is stupid if breech take the kite down b4 u turn back downwind , 5,20 mins recovery rubish you should just droped the kite on foredeak and went for her shes more inportant that a kite
mckecfra 4 years ago
In those conditions with inexperienced crew, skipper should have a PFD on as well.
sd3830 4 years ago
Learn from it, we all have our misadventures. I was glad Jill had her PFD on. Re-group, lick your wounds, thanks for sharing.
sd3830 4 years ago 2
Kudos for posting the video. I think you are very lucky that the boat didn't capsize and someone didn't get hurt. I think the main weakness is the over confidance of the captain. I was lmao. It was a very good effort though. I am sure more than a few on that boat will never set foot on a boat again and for the rest it will be a life long passion.
mdrsailor 4 years ago
everytime I watch this video, I shake my head more and more. I don't understand why a boat with a reefed main is flying a spinnaker with this crew. There is times to fly a chute, and a boat full of newbies without anyone knowing what is going on(even the skipper), its stupid.
You people give a bad name to sailors. Get a clue... read a book, sail when its light, and figure stuff out... like have a guy trimmer, a competent bowman, etc.
dannyv1986 4 years ago

As you can see from the video, no one paniced, and no one was injured.
mtevansman 4 years ago 2
i wouldnt worry cos it happens to the best of us and when the situation got really serious after the chinese gybe they all performed admirably. except for the helmsman she didnt seem to be with it or the guy sitting at the mainsheet doing nothing. but i bet they learned alot so they can laugh at the bext person who does it.
waterscm2 4 years ago
This is a great training video, and I salute the captain for being brave enough to put it up. Certainly there is a lot of what not to do in this, but to those posting derogatory comments, stop stating the obvious, that is at least as bone headed as anything in the video and unlike the crew you have time to think about your post. Personally I appreciate the comments that point out what was done wrong, so that next time it can be done right.
tchunter3 4 years ago
driver is watching crew instead of driving (did she learn that from the skipper?) She should be on the high side and pumping helm to keep the boat under the spin in gusts, guy in blue doing nothing should be calling puffs, too much noise and chatter. Well, good learning experience...keep it up! Videos are great for learning.
klugert 4 years ago
I can't believe the skipper let go of the helm and auto-gybed, nearly killing people.
klugert 4 years ago
in real life Jill would lost at sea.
Joeey 4 years ago
Am I missimg the point or is what happens to the spin pole and halyard secondary 2 the fact that the helm should have borne away when the gust came & there should have been 2 people on the sheet & guy to play them. The way I look at it they werent ready/able for the gust and even if the spin had been set properly they still would have broached. The way they reacted to the situation as well as how long it took them to get the spinakker set in the first place shows tells a lot
kerryboy 5 years ago

I couldn't stop laughing, I will use this as a safetyfilm for my people.
plaatjesmonster 5 years ago
In the beginning if the driver would have fallen off more and blanketed the chute behind the main it could have been raised to the top most likely without coming undone from the pole. Then they may not have wiped out at all. The true test of a good crew is how quicky they recover from an incident. These guys need some more practice and definitely better direction and communication from the skipper.

Absolutely apalling. That crew had no business flying the chute in those condition. Damn lucky no one was hurt. This is nothing to be proud of. Stay the hell away from me on the course.
trex021 5 years ago
Yeah, not a proud moment and they are lucky no one was hurt, but how else will they learn? Whaddya mean they shouldn't be out there? They didn't round up into anyone, what are you afraid of? Maybe next time they'll blow the vang, hang on and have more of the crew helping or on the high side.
boomercrew 5 years ago
He should have had at least two more experienced competent crew. If he did, that would have been an excellent scenario to train in newbies. He made a very poor decision to bring at least one child out into that situation. I'm guessing his decision making at mark roundings is probably not so good either, hence my comment. FYI you don't blow the vang DDW. It was a round down, the main was helping balance the boat.
