did you mention that they had to be an even number amout of holes so that when you sow the signatures together yo always come out on the outside to reenter from the outside? or did I miss it? :(
I am looking to bind my own book, except it is not a sketch book. I actually want to print writing on it, bind it, and give it as a gift. I'm wondering how I can do the "signatures" to ensure my book pages are in order. Any suggestions as to how to print so that I can bind it without going crazy?
Yes, so simple of directions to follow, made my girl and I one for Christmas, now she has no excuse but to bring it with her (always complained they were too big to travel with). Thanks
thanks so much! the way you describe the process, and your video images are so clear, especially that connecting stitch.. I think I finally get how to do it now... some books are so cool but leave out half the action so its harder to know what to do. Groovy! Have a great strong New Year and thanks for the lovely book making lessons. I can see myself doing it now yippee!
@TheCreamyGurl Definitely try! =3 I started sewing when I was about 7 or 8, so I think it’s it should be doable. You can always ask someone else who might be able to help you out too.
@LGarm82 Check Barnes and Noble, they still sell the exact same style book in their journal and blank book section the last time I checked. That’s where I got mine before a long time ago.
This is wonderful!! I wanted to re-bind my Sketchbook Project sketchbook, but couldn't find a good tutorial on how to replace the flimsy paper. Thanks!! (Just a note: the background music was a bit louder than your voice in some places and was a little distracting... it made it hard to concentrate on what you were demonstrating.... )
@84godd I’ve seen up to 20 pages a signature or even more, but putting more paper in a signature can make the pages quite uneven and the signature might not be as strong. I find the book looks better and is stronger if you simply make more signatures. It’s all personal preference, if you experiment a little with the paper you plan to use, you will see what will happen if you decide to use make a signature out of 30 pages or something. I personally don’t do more than 10 a signature. =)
@AlyssaMack1200 That’s a nice alternative! Saves a lot of work, I know if I owned a sewing machine that’d probably be something I’d do. Thanks for sharing =)
I was afraid I wouldn't be able to make it after you said some of the things we would need but after watching both parts I know I can substitute and still come out with a nice book! :D Thanks!
Wow!! I'm braziliam and I study design in the school of arts of the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro (UFRJ). And I have to say that this is the BEST sketchbook video tutorial i've ever seen. It's a shame I only see it now after 8 months cause i would like to buy or to win your sketchbook. You did / do a great job, congratulations!
Can you tell me the name of the opening song? If I remember, I heard it on a tv serie called Roswell. THANX A LOT for the video!
@andarilhork1 I made a big mistake, the opening song isn't from the tv serie "Roswell", actually it is from the anime "Serial experiment Lain". I watched this anime in 2003... =P
@andarilhork1 Yeah I was going to say...lol. I <3 that show so much too! XD Thanks so much too! I was on such a time crunch when making this tutorial, I would've loved to tweaked and edited it more. =) The mini book was given away, but I still actually the one I made in this video ;) and you're welcome too! *hugs*
@berrysweetlety You can find it at any craft store in the scrapbook section. You can also use anything else that's hard, like extra thin wood. Binder's board that's meant for hardcover books can also be found at art supply stores and online (dick blicks for example) You can even just use a stiff paper and make it a soft cover book. Leather, and just the fabric can work too. =)
can you make a video on how to decorate sketchbooks.. i'm looking for some inspiration on what to do with my blank one.. it's sooo borring..all black with some pen writings on it...
I was actually doing something like this as an assignment because the drawing pads the classes had this year were pretty crappy. We basically tore up the old sketchbook and used it a a base for the new one. I used spray paint all over mine and my friend made tentacles and turned hers into something like an octopus...
HELLO BUNNY!!! This is the best "how to sketchbook" tutorial here. I've watched a bunch of them and you rock!! I'm in the middle of making one now and I have every confidence that it will turn out great. Thank you very much.
@neoncookies1 For this one I did yes, I like to keep them all equal to create a more uniform book. If memory serves me right, I believe there were 3 pages (6 leaves) per signature for this sketchbook that I made. =)
Hi, Im starting my to make my own Sketchbook from your instructions and I have most of the supplies but the thing that i couldnt get hold of is the Chip board. I was wondering what els can I use besides Chip Board, maybe (Birch plywood?)
@MPLNtodopormexico Yes, birch plywood would work perfectly for this, it'll give you an even stronger cover. 1/8" thick is usually a nice thickness. You can select 1/4" is you like the thicker feel, though 1/8" thickness would be my first choice. I personally prefer using binder's board or a plywood for my books actually. I recommended chipboard simply because it's cheaper and easier to use for most people. (i.e. cutting it up, some people are unsure or don't have the means to cut wood)Good Luck!
@Zyborg23 Once it's completely done no, unless you feel like ripping it up lol. The time to add more pages is when you're sewing the pages together. You could use a plastic comb binding, it's fairly cheap to acquire the parts and the pages an be rearranged, taken out, and added without damage.
@smalltugz Spirals are pretty easy to make since you don't need to do any sewing. You can actually find hole punches specifically for the job, and even find the spiral rings to twist into place, at office supply stores. They're super easy to make =)
@LilScar727 I used that one for my freshman year in high school. The mandatory drawing class everyone had to take before they could continue on to any other art class, everyone hated it lol!
@TRANSiENTART Ugh i know It gets dirtyyy si easy and it annoys meeee I hope im getting a new one for Christmas or i could just make one like your doing here :)
@LilScar727 I like the hardbound ones much for when I take my sketchbook around a lot. I kept getting in trouble for all the anime and mangas I drew in mine lol! At the time I had a teacher who hated it when students drew the stuff along with (and I quote) "crosses, skulls, roses, eyes, anime, etc."

umm...can i like replace the chipboard with cardboard?
TheCreamyGurl 2 months ago
@TheCreamyGurl Whatever hard material you want to use. The only problem with cardboard is it can sometimes get bent easily, but otherwise go for it.
