most downhillers use flat pedals/platforms tbh, for that reason (safer if you crash) and the freedom of pedalling you get, but there are some that like clipless cos of the extra precision and control i guess, but yeh most ive come across (incl. me) ride flats so no worries lol :)

I use clipins (SPD Shimano)it's not scary after some practise you will see that they are good, at first you will fall but then it'll be nice, you need to decide btw clipins are more expensive

My buddies race in the SDA, I've went to see them at various tracks through Scotland, with the exception of Fort William the upper section of Dunkeld is easily the scariest bit ive seen!!! everything before the fire-road is just epic!!! its difficult to walk up so high five guys!!
